- We visited Valentino Rossi's Ranch in Tavullia (PU), discovering the features and secrets of this playground with school function that mixes play and work ... as only the Doctor can do
The Ranch, the kingdom of Valentino Rossi, the place where every motorcyclist's dreams come true. Everything was born with a handful of friends and lots of imagination, a lawn with tall grass that has become a virgin canvas for a circuit. Graziano, the Doctor's father, indulged himself with stakes and ribbons; Valentino himself, together with Mattia Pasini and Marco Simoncelli, began to drift around those lines, gradually creating that unique circuit in the world. The American at track mixed with fantasy, the lesson of the Martians with stars and stripes interpreted with Latin canons, not giving up the smile on the lips, but doing everything seriously.
On the one hand, describing the Ranch is very simple: in some accounts it is a dirt track. On the other hand it is damn di cult, because it is almost like a mirror that returns both the image of what Valentino is and what it will be
The track is about two kilometers long and
half and is full of curves with rays
different and evocative names (the Chariot, the
Quercia, Fagiolo, Berta, the
Spoon, and so on) and remarkable
elevation changes; in his drawing
there are also two ovals, one
smaller and larger one a
surround him. Just take a look
to the planimetry to understand how it is
a perfect gym that puts riders
in front of every different situation
possible, a track in which it serves technique
and sensitivity to go strong. And it's
also challenging for the physicist, who
manages to put samples to the test
well trained. His surface, then, is
a little mystery. The base, in
depth, consists of means
meter of lime on which rests a layer of about ten centimeters composed of a secret mixture. The trick is to have a soil that does not become pulp in case of rain and allows the bikes to drift. No one will tell you which materials are used in Tavullia, but Kevin Schwantz was among the consultants to reach the final result. To take care of keeping the track in order is the specialist Barbone (no names and surnames, he is well known) and Antonio, who is also the keeper of the Ranch. Always have everything in perfect condition has the suorezzo, about 200,000 euros a year just for routine maintenance, and this figure makes it clear that we are not talking about a simple playground for grown-up children who live for motorcycles.
The Ranch is not just a track, but it is the center of Valentino's world, both as a driver and as an entrepreneur and teacher. The Doctor, as a young man, always trained off-road: he did it at the Cava, a mythical and somewhat naive place. When he decided to make his training more professional, the Ranch was formed in his head. "A place of aggregation and competition" is described by Alberto Tebaldi, for all Albi, one of Rossi's closest collaborators. A place to share with other drivers, because only through comparison can you continue to improve, but not only. Because there was also another idea that frangled in Valentino's mind, that of taking another step forward, putting at least one foot on the other side of the fence and contributing with his own means and experience to make other pilots grow.
A few years later the was born
Riders Academy project, the
Doctor's school. In truth it is one
strange institution, to which one cannot
register, but you must be chosen, in
where the principal is the toughest opponent and i
benches are replaced by saddles and
dumbbells. Apart from the romantic aspect,
also in this case the matter is
tremendously serious and nothing is left to chance. At the moment there are 11 students, with Franco Morbidelli as the spearhead in MotoGP, with the title of Moto2 world champion charging around his neck. In the intermediate class, for 2018, Francesco Bagnaia, Stefano Manzi, Luca Marini and Lorenzo Baldassarri are in Moto3 with Andrea Migno, Nicolò Bulega, Niccolò Antonelli, Marco Bezzecchi and Dennis Foggia, while Celestino Vietti, the youngest, is lined up in the CEV.
A small army colored yellow, followed by a demanding organizational machine. "For every driver, we need an investment that we can estimate between 60 and 70 thousand euros a year" reveals Tebaldi. You don't need a calculator to understand that the management of Academy and track costs almost one million euros. Because it is not just a matter of doing a few laps at the Ranch, but following them at every stage of the preparation, as well as in sports management. The Academy boys train in the gym under the supervision of Valentino Rossi's trainer.
