As an installation engineer working for a German company for the last 28yrs in the UK.. 3 GOOD TIPS... That may be helpful 😉 1.. In hot weather do not wear black T shirts .. black only absorbs the heat making your working day more uncomfortable.. wear white to reflect the heat ... 2. As & where possible driving to your local building merchant for a few items is not really cost effective on your fuel consumption.. Fill the back of the wagon with bricks & lime & material... Less journeys.. less money spent 3 & final top tip & the best tip Buy yourself a Veritas hand plane Router... You will be able to make anything & every thing & every wood working joint imaginable It is a dream hand tool to own £190 approximately now and door and window tenons would be a walk in the park.. I understand your tips but the last one I think is certainly right but the site of the chateau is in the middle of nowhere and there is no one living and no security! I think thats why Dan does not want to many materials at the same time. And remember there is as far as we know no bank loan or so so maybe just small perchases of what he can afford? I wish Dan would answer some of our questions.
Yes, agreed. Changing them causes much more unnecessary extra work and expense, and detracts from the character and original design, which Dan has said he intends to replicate. 👍
I’ve commented several times that I hope Dan has engaged an experienced architect and engineer to provide specifications. Looks like he hasn’t but it’s a false economy to try to DIY this stuff imho.
@@boucephales a really expert person is needed for this kind of restoration! It is not a small house, it is a very big high one that had fire on its walls and hot, cold, rain and so on, looks so fragile!

I used an old sailing boom vang assembled upside down for lifting heavy objects by myself. It enabled me to hoist large beams into position and hold them there

I got pretty ill three or four years ago, and lost my 30 year career in aviation and my ability to do my favourite hobby, building stuff and fixing stuff. Your daily vlog gives me something to look forward to each day, and I love daydreaming about what I would do if I was there fixing up an old wreck of a place. You would probably also enjoy watching "Dreaming Of A Chateau". A young couple bought a big fixer upper on Lake Como in northern Italy and they work very hard and are very industrious. They are real down to Earth and she is very bubbly and animated and loves flowers and gardening and she does plastering, sanding, painting and he is more quiet and very agreeable and does electrical, plumbing, heavy lifting. It's incredible the transformation when I go back and look at their earliest vlogs and compare to what they have done so far, with plenty more work to do.

They are an English couple who bought a chateau and relais de Poste and are renovating this 14 th century chateau with their own bare hands and with a minumum of budget. I love that you’re keeping the odd floor levels as this is the character of the chateau. You don’t want it all level and perfect…it’s a chateau and the magic of twisting corridors, little steps up and down, hidden staircases etc is what makes the magic…..please please please add hidden doors and secret passages….how fun for the boys and any future guests. Honestly, I haven't noticed a change in quality, but maybe I'm not that observant. Anyway, so glad it wasn't you that fell. I occasionally pray for your safety.
Loving these videos! One thing I would suggest, if you haven't already, is getting someone in to start doing a full set of plans to work from, for permits, and for records. I'd even consider doing it. Though that could just be me as a tech working in architectural and engineering firms the past 20 some odd years.

Dan, I am sooo invested in these videos. I came across one and loved it, so obviously I went back and binge watched all the videos on the chateau. I am amazed with the work you are doing.
I've been following Dan for a month. Clicked an interesting video re chateau renovation and watched a few, then backtracked to the very first vlog at the farmhouse. Pretty soon, I was up at night hitting that "I'll watch just one more" button and all of a sudden it's 3am. Thank goodness I'm retired because I'm hooked. Now I've watched the latest installment and there's no "one more" button. I don't know how y'all do it; watch one, then wait for the next. I've got the DTs! But seriously, watching Dan from the first at the farmhouse, and when he started working at LaLonde, is to see him grow in his skills, talents, ambitions, and confidence not only in his building talents but also his video work. It's an amazing journey he's taking us all on. Would that we all had his drive and abilities. And, Dan, I don't know how you can go through all the comments you receive, edit your vlogs, and get any sleep, but know that we are all here and I hope our energy buoys yours. PS - since seeing the boys in a recent vlog, I am wondering about the projects that we last saw at the farmhouse...the boot room and the bathroom. Have they been hired out, or did you finish them and just not film that?
I am based in the UK and although my background is carpentry, through experience I worked my way up to site manager positions. I am very impressed with your progress and the chateau already looks more structurally sound and stable. There is a system that you might find useful called Posi-Joists which are man made wooden joists that are light and very strong. Google will give you lots more information.
Inquiring minds want to know - Stephanie has often spoken about the approval process she has to deal with when she wants to make changes to / update / repair her Chateau. Are you subject to that process too? Are there building codes in France that you must adhere to as you restore a significant historical building?
RIP vlog camera. It worked well for you. I have to say I really enjoy how you use your drone Dan. It makes it very interesting looking at the difference in the old brick work, your brick work and the beautiful countryside that surrounds you. The system you have ordered for the flooring is clever and sensible. However I hope someone will be there when you lift those big beams. Absolutetely no way you could lift steels that are over 5 m long into place on your own. A 200 mm steel weighs 23 kg per metre and these might be bigger. 240 mm is already up to 31.5 kg/m. Eyeballing the size of a room from a video is close to impossible but I't hazard a guess and say the span is about 5 m, plus at least another 250 mm to go into the wall on either side, so 5.5 m length. That means a 200 mm steel weights 126 kg, a 240 mm one 173.25 kg. That's not insanely heavy but definitely more like a four-person job, especially because of the unwieldy size. There are some nifty tools that would make the installation easier though. The same style of trestles Dan uses for his scaffolding is available with a crank and spindle system for lifting heavy items. A pair of those could well turn this into a two-person job. Getting the steels in is still quite tricky because they need to be longer than the room, so a lot of maneouvering involved.
That's very exciting, Dan. Small steps every day & it's just amazing how the progress adds up! I think those ring beams are just the ticket to reinforce the old building, and the beam & block is a worthy replacement for the old roof - also a great structural member. And to heat you talking about starting on the other floors ... superb! Great stuff!

Keeping the levels the same as the originals is best bet. Making them all level, you will be fighting other issues along the way as you move forward and upward. There may be something you’re not seeing now that may arise later.
Also, not sure how it is in France, but you would most likely save time, money, most import, you back if you were to have the building supplies delivered in larger quantities then going back and forth and loading and unloading small batches. Get shipping containers for storage. I think in the long run you will be thankful.

Great Work! Hope the new camera is better than ever! I have to have two phones, and two vehicles. If the camera is the root of your income, get two. Both of my phones were lost last year. A patron of a coffee shop close by, walked to my house. An electrician found them run over in the street. They both had great fall guards, and screen covers, meaning they weren't damaged, just had to replace their screen covers. Hope you can get a backup plan, so that all the hard work you do gets easier. Sometimes used cameras are available online. The new concrete reinforcement plan seems superb. I am living in a neighborhood of engineers. My uncle was an architect. Running things by a structural engineer or structural architect is an option. But your instincts seem really good! Amazing progress. You definitely are preserving what you can, with good plans with the new construction.

It amazes me your problem-solving ability and your knowledge over such a broad expanse of subjects - the construction, filmmaking, gardening, food and cooking... the list goes on and on. How did you learn all this so quickly? I am glad the response is so good so that you can keep on moving forward!
You definitely made the right decision re. the floor levels. Keeping it a little bit quirky, characterful and romantic is the way to go, IMHO. Restoring rather than rebuilding. I love your videos. It's a pity they're not longer but I realise it's ALL a lot of time eating, hard work restoring a large building AND creating quality videos.

I had to make flooring and paint choices for our house when we moved in and thought that task was daunting… I couldn’t even imagine trying to make all of the decisions needed for this project. I would be overwhelmed to the point of paralysis! So much respect for your organizational skills, foresight, determination, talent and attitude. Love watching you bring the chateau back to life!
Exelent progress and great video… you went with original multilevel flooring with steps here and there … well it complicated things in a way and simplifyed it in another… I would use an architect to preplan for elevator? Loving these videos! One thing I would suggest, if you haven't already, is getting someone in to start doing a full set of plans to work from, for permits, and for records. I'd even consider doing it. Though that could just be me as a tech working in architectural and engineering firms the past 20 some odd years.

I've been following Dan for a month. Clicked an interesting video re chateau renovation and watched a few, then backtracked to the very first vlog at the farmhouse. Pretty soon, I was up at night hitting that "I'll watch just one more" button and all of a sudden it's 3am. Thank goodness I'm retired because I'm hooked. Now I've watched the latest installment and there's no "one more" button. I don't know how y'all do it; watch one, then wait for the next. I've got the DTs! But seriously, watching Dan from the first at the farmhouse, and when he started working at LaLonde, is to see him grow in his skills, talents, ambitions, and confidence not only in his building talents but also his video work. It's an amazing journey he's taking us all on. Would that we all had his drive and abilities. And, Dan, I don't know how you can go through all the comments you receive, edit your vlogs, and get any sleep, but know that we are all here and I hope our energy buoys yours.
PS - since seeing the boys in a recent vlog, I am wondering about the projects that we last saw at the farmhouse...the boot room and the bathroom. Have they been hired out, or did you finish them and just not film that?

I am based in the UK and although my background is carpentry, through experience I worked my way up to site manager positions. I am very impressed with your progress and the chateau already looks more structurally sound and stable. There is a system that you might find useful called Posi-Joists which are man made wooden joists that are light and very strong. Google will give you lots more information.

Inquiring minds want to know - Stephanie has often spoken about the approval process she has to deal with when she wants to make changes to / update / repair her Chateau. Are you subject to that process too? Are there building codes in France that you must adhere to as you restore a significant historical building?

France has a comprehensive planning system. You can't even knock down a tatty old shed without permission.
RIP vlog camera. It worked well for you. I have to say I really enjoy how you use your drone Dan. It makes it very interesting looking at the difference in the old brick work, your brick work and the beautiful countryside that surrounds you. The system you have ordered for the flooring is clever and sensible. However I hope someone will be there when you lift those big beams. That’s making me worry for your safety already. 😂 Yes I know I forgot to mention gloves harness and mask. There you go.

Absolutetely no way you could lift steels that are over 5 m long into place on your own. A 200 mm steel weighs 23 kg per metre and these might be bigger. 240 mm is already up to 31.5 kg/m. Eyeballing the size of a room from a video is close to impossible but I't hazard a guess and say the span is about 5 m, plus at least another 250 mm to go into the wall on either side, so 5.5 m length. That means a 200 mm steel weights 126 kg, a 240 mm one 173.25 kg. That's not insanely heavy but definitely more like a four-person job, especially because of the unwieldy size. There are some nifty tools that would make the installation easier though. The same style of trestles Dan uses for his scaffolding is available with a crank and spindle system for lifting heavy items. A pair of those could well turn this into a two-person job. Getting the steels in is still quite tricky because they need to be longer than the room, so a lot of maneouvering involved.
That's very exciting, Dan. Small steps every day & it's just amazing how the progress adds up! I think those ring beams are just the ticket to reinforce the old building, and the beam & block is a worthy replacement for the old roof - also a great structural member. And to heat you talking about starting on the other floors ... superb! Great stuff!

The amount you get done alone - I am getting pop corn sorted for when Calvin arrives (even though its breakfast time here in Aus when the vlogs land). So interesting, my brain is alive with the steps toward getting the stability back together - you could do a few vlogs just on that alone, just like the forrest management one - its all fascinating.

Keeping the levels the same as the originals is best bet. Making them all level, you will be fighting other issues along the way as you move forward and upward. There may be something you’re not seeing now that may arise later.
Also, not sure how it is in France, but you would most likely save time, money, most import, you back if you were to have the building supplies delivered in larger quantities then going back and forth and loading and unloading small batches. Get shipping containers for storage. I think in the long run you will be thankful.
Since both front and back have balcony doors the problems would pop up the instant you tried to install the floors.
@@Ragnar8504 I agree but not only the balconies, I’m thinking roof structure above and ceiling heights. They most likely wouldn’t have built it with step downs without a reason.

To be honest, the quality of the vlogs is still great and I've barely noticed, because you cut and structure them so well.
Great Work! Hope the new camera is better than ever! I have to have two phones, and two vehicles. If the camera is the root of your income, get two. Both of my phones were lost last year. A patron of a coffee shop close by, walked to my house. An electrician found them run over in the street. They both had great fall guards, and screen covers, meaning they weren't damaged, just had to replace their screen covers. Hope you can get a backup plan, so that all the hard work you do gets easier.

The new concrete reinforcement plan seems superb. I am living in a neighborhood of engineers. My uncle was an architect. Running things by a structural engineer or structural architect is an option.
But your instincts seem really good! Amazing progress. You definitely are preserving what you can, with good plans with the new construction.

You definitely made the right decision re. the floor levels. Keeping it a little bit quirky, characterful and romantic is the way to go, IMHO. Restoring rather than rebuilding. I love your videos. It's a pity they're not longer but I realise it's ALL a lot of time eating, hard work restoring a large building AND creating quality videos.

I had to make flooring and paint choices for our house when we moved in and thought that task was daunting… I couldn’t even imagine trying to make all of the decisions needed for this project.
