This is the third in Sir David Attenborough's epic Life series, following on from Life on Earth and The Living Planet. It begins with the ways in which animals arrive in the world and ends with the extraordinary techniques they employ to reproduce. In between, there are the other trials we all have to face: building a home, finding food, rearing children and getting on with friends and rivals.

Watching this, you understand where the term bird brain came from
If I go nerd mode on this, these birds are basically locked in a vicious situation, their bodies are growing their parents no longer feed them so they need calories which they are losing at a very quick rate.
The only way to obtain food is to learn how to swim on water and fly, the birds we saw were likely exhausted and literally incapable of doing anything. It is survival of the fittest a its purest, the last bird that escaped was stronger/healthier individual. The whole situation works well from evolution perspective.

Trials of life is one of the best Attenborough documentaries and this is one of its best sequences. The show still holds up after over 30 years.
Sean Allen I remember seeing it as kid in school. Now I have all the David Attenborough stuff I can get in America. This though isn’t one of them. Life of mammals, life of birds and life in cold blood are also amazing.
True. All of his shows are amazing. Shames he's isn't accessible to a wider audience, although he has done a wonderful show on Netflix, Our planet. Don't know why in America, his narration for shows like Planet earth and Life was done by movie and TV stars. They can't compare to this incredible man.

Such a wonderfully captured, utterly primal scene there. One creature wildly struggling for its life, the other struggling equally hard to keep itself fed, both giving everything they’ve got to survive.

Sharks Nose is highly sensitive to touch, I believe as the nose is touching the bird their was a pleasurable feeling on the shark.

As is pointed by The Infectious Channel, I also remember viewing this in which tiger sharks attack these birds. The sharks INSTINCTIVELY know that they can capture their preys easily, don't they?
The success rate actually goes up with time-the chicks that fledge later almost never survive because by that point in the nesting season the sharks have fully learned and mastered the technique.

having grown up watching David Attenborough documentaries, the natural world has always been my greatest fascination. It has inspired me so much that I created my own channel about wildlife. I'm fairly certain the lack of response from many of the birds is due to exhaustion trying to fly over the water then being forced to rest on the surface to recuperate.
