In this series, Founder and Director of Samba New York!, Philip Galinsky, Ph.D. provides tutorials that explore some of the basic techniques, strokes, and patterns on different samba percussion instruments. This first video shows two common versions of a basic pattern for repique de mão, an instrument created in the 1970s by Mestre Ubirany, one of the percussionists and founding members of Grupo Fundo de Quintal. The repique de mão is typically played in a smaller-group samba format such as a pagode band or roda de samba.
