    I'm one of those who like to COLLECT things as well as use them. I think, if you have the means, and if it brings you joy, then buy what you want to. I have Sennelier, Holbein, Van Gogh, W&N, Daniel Smith etc. Some in palletes some in pans. The 60 5l tube set Holbein is my favorite and special for me because I created my first pan palette with this set. I love that it doesn't use ox gall and for me personally, they're very easy to control and I think they spread out lovely. I think my bigger problem is brushes lol they're like friggin pokemon to me.

    Hi again and thank you so much for showing my hand made watercolors in the Bob Ross tin! That just made my day! I have created lots more that I will for sale very soon, as well as my handmade paint brushes and I would be happy to send out a few samples to anyone interested while supplies last. Thanks for another awesome video!

    I started watching you and Paul Clark, both use Winsor Newton watercolor and since my first set was Arteza... $15 - I was so excited to have the Winsor Newton 24 pan set! I buy individual colors... magenta... blue-green... turquoise... favorites from different brands. My favorite new color is Seaglass by Da Vinci... Caribbean ocean color...
    Thank you 😊 Emma... always look forward to seeing your videos! A California Gramma ♥️

    oooh I love ceramic palettes! So yes please, would love to see your collection.
    I think it’s great that you stick to one palette. But I’d be in interested in seeing you use the professional paints you were gifted and hear your thoughts on them, especially how you think they compare to your W&N paints. Not in terms of assessing them, just where you think they’re similar and or how they are different.

      Pick your top 5 basic colors palettes and the tubes that go with them. Then chose your top 3-5 specialty palettes, travel, muted colors, metallics, 2 you just can’t live without and any tubes that go with those palettes. Then find a children’s hospital or a Ronald McDonald house and donate the rest. It will be cleansing and make you feel good that you’ve brought joy to children or their siblings that are in the hospital for weeks.

      I have my own tiny craft store and my husband use to get frustrated that I would buy more supplies. Until he saw my art then his perspective began to change. I'm homeschooling grandkids now and we are never short of art classes in many different mediums. We've even started roping him into "class" and it makes everyone happy including the people we gift our "master pieces" too. I may be using the term "master piece" loosely but art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

      @@jwall6006 I understand the intention behind your comment but I think you missed the part where he said he actually uses the paint.
      As a side note, if you use Amazon Prime to shop for art supplies you can sign up for "Amazon Smile" and qualifying purchases have a percentage that goes to the charity of your choice. One of which is St Jude's Children's Hospital. They also have a gift page where you can go and buy things the hospital is requesting to fill a need. That way you can help others AND enjoy your art supplies.

    I like Winsor and Newton, the Cotman use the same pigments as the professional; it's just less pigmented. Daniel Smith has some really great colors, and if you haven't tried the Kuretake paints from Japan, they are so worth it. Lovely colors, nice and bright and not too opaque. Shinhan Korean paints are also nice. Nice bright colors and some colors are more opaque than others. If you have the chance, you really should try Kuretake Japan.

    • @valeriereneeharper
      @valeriereneeharper 9 місяців тому

      I think the only other difference with cotman is that they don’t use “toxic” pigments, so their cobalt will be different than their professional grade for example

    love your minimalistic approach. I also try to keep it simple. I have few palettes, a white nights 36 set, an 18 set of schmincke and 24 set of Mijello, a travel set by W&N and a Sonnet 24 set. I rotate my palettes so that I use them all up. I do have a few odd tubes and pans of winsor and newton and other brands but not really using them since I don't have split primary system there. I find split primary to be the most used colors in every palette I have. Of all I have, I love Mijello the best and I will probably stay with Mijello for my main palette, maybe switch yellows to some other brand. I would love to give student paints I have to someone who would really use them.

    I've been lucky enough to try some different watercolours, but my go to is windsor and newton professional partly because they are readily available where I live and m Graham and Daniel smith are crazy expensive. I do have a kuretake gansai tambi set, but they're more opaque than regular watercolours. The other set I like which I was gifted for my birthday is Dr ph Martin liquid watercolours they're different to anything I've used and I'm still experimenting with them so I can't recommend them. I do have the artful watercolours and gouache from their subscription boxes which are both great, but I'm not sure how archival they are, so mainly use them for my sketchbook or planning larger pieces, generally I fall back to my favourite windsor and newton professional watercolours x

    Ohh wow 😂I started out with the Arteza 24 Colors Tube set of Watercolor Paints when I began almost 4 years ago. It took me 3 years to use up almost all the small 12 ml tubes. I thought they were great for me to begin with learning all the basics of watercolor painting & to truly appreciate moving/upgrading to a better quality of watercolor if I was serious 🧐 about watercolor painting. I have been using the complete 45 colors set of Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors for about a year coming this 2023 summer. Like you, I am finding that I love the W&N brand and as my 45 Cotman pans run out I will definitely upgrade again to the W&N Professional grade of Watercolors. This way I can also find out what my favorite used colors are. I guess I am doing it the longer way around. 😂❤Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts & watercolor collections with us. I really appreciate & enjoy this video.

    There's nothing wrong with staying with what you're comfortable using. My pallet is a mish-mash of Paul Rubens (love how vibrant and clear they are), Daniel Smith, W&N Cotman (my first pallet), a couple of Schminke and a few others. It all depends on what I like.

      Oh dear Emily, your collection of watercolors is very conservative compared to many of the watercolor artists on YT...at least the ones I watch who do tutorials AND reviews. ...then they get a lot sent to them too. So you've done very well to be true to your brand, W&N , and not to have succumbed to the "gotta have it" or "gotta have it all" obsession that afflicts so many YT creators and their viewers. Having said that, however , I guess I have a "small hoard" myself, but would be happy to settle in to one brand. But it's hard with so many great brands with new & "new to me" colors and types of wc to try. For example the Schmincke Super Granulated sets are great and have become so popular. I have a couple of sample sets and love them. I do use the artist quality paints these days, but have some student grade too. I have only been painting with watercolors more seriously in the last few years. And then there's watercolor pencils and other wc types that offer other painting & coloring options. So many temptations out there. Thanks for taking us through your collection!
      P.S. Van Gogh watercolors, (considered semi-pro and made by Royal Talens who also make pro grade Rembrandt paints) is a super almost pro alternative to student sets and are reasonably priced and available on Amazon.

    Emma, I feel you, in a lot of ways! I have a schmorgesbord (totally not spelled correctly) of paints, but I actually use all of the paints I have bought, which is shocking, because I have a lot.🤣
    My personal top 3 brands of paint are:
    1. Qor 24 count palette! I love love love how these paints bloom!! They put extra ox gall in their products so that they just… flow!!! So pretty and satisfying to watch!
    2. My Sennelier Voyage palette is so AWESOME!! Not only does it come with the basic colors, they’re insanely vibrant colors! (I have their 24 count palette as well), but, the voyage palette is just super accessible and I grab it off my shelf, all the time.
    3. And recently, I’ve started my own palette with a mix of Holbein and Daniel Smith, because I’m not loyal to brands.
    If a company has some specialty colors that other brands don’t offer and there isn’t a comparable color, I’m gonna try it. I have yet to try Winsor and Newton paints which is my next investment, and I’ve been eyeballing that teeny tiny palette you showed last, because… CUTE!!! Plus it has all the primary colors you’d need! So, whenever you can, please do a review of that little one, so I can have some help deciding. 🤭😉💖💖

    Because of budget, I have a basic set from Michael's. I also have a set of metallics.
    Palettes not tubes because they dry out too quickly. Apart from that, I use watercolor pencils which I invest in. I love my Faber-Castell Albrecht-Durer pencils which I buy from a local art supplies store here in Calgary.
    PS in my art class, we actually use small watercolor palettes from the U of C. They are circular and come in two separate containers with lids. If I did anything outside , that's the set I would take.

  • @FaerieDust
    @FaerieDust 2 роки тому +1

    I have a bunch of palettes I love, but I seem to be more into collecting empty palettes than sets of paints 😅 I love different styles of palettes but it's such a waste to but sets since they mostly all consist of the same basic colours anyway.
    Pretty Excellent is 100% my go-to recommendation for inexpensive but good paint! It's a great value, though I ended up giving the paints away (I popped them out of the plastic and stuck them into empty half pans) and use the tin to store my White Nights paints.
    My personal favourite brand is probably Qor, I think they're what I'd choose if I could only keep one. No real reason, I don't think they're necessarily better than other comparable brands, they just make me happy.

    I've tried several of the "artist quality brands" even though I'm not an artist. I always recommend that if you're on a budget, it's better to get a small quantity of a great brand than a large quantity of a poor brand. The only true artist brand I've tried so far that I don't recommend is Sennelier. They are pretty blah for the price. I started out with the Daniel Smith 6-color mixing set and then augmented it. substantially.. And it fits like an old glove. It just doesn't fail me, ever....except, I'm no fan of the Primatek's. I can mix most of them with standard watercolor and believe those who say they're fake/augmented, because it occurred to me too when I was using the Amethyst. You can't get that level of pigment out of rocks, and it looked and behaved strangely like Diox Violet, hmmm. I steer clear. But for the most part, DS is vibrant, crazily pigmented and just amazing. I think when you find that perfect watercolor for you, you should stick with it. I'm glad Winsor Newton is your love.

About 2 years ago I combined all my smaller half pan & full pan pallets into 3 stackable storage trays so that it is one giant pallet organized by colour families.
