A tremendous tutorial, one of the best I've seen so far. I have just purchased an E-M1 Mark II. I've scoured the net for information, downloaded work sheets and books, struggling to find effective and simple demonstrations and explanations for the camera, without having to muddle through the manual. Wow, you have delivered big time, a basic platform by which to explore and utilise the technical wizardry of this complex camera. Kudos.
Dear Tony, I recently retired as a photojournalist and used Nikon D pro cameras for to many years. And couldn't wait to get rid of that heavy huge gear. Now I have a OMD EM1MK2 and was amazed at the compactness and power of this little guy. Thanks very much for all the help as I couldn't make heads or tales in the hundreds of functions and what not this power house can do. Your long tutorial helped me SO MUCH! as I'm on my way to MT. Bormo volcano in Indonesia on Saturday becasue of you I have not got a great understanding of the features and benifits of all these functions. I will be purchasing your publications from now on. I know it took hours upon hours to make this video you have the patience of a nun. Thanks and double thanks again! If your ever in Malaysia give me a heads up. I'm a friend of Matt Granger. I'm from Seattle and worked for AFP AP etc. Thanks again Tony and Chelsea.
OMG! Keeping up with this overview video tutorial is overwhelming from a beginner's point of view, yet the tutorial is on spot. For all beginners. If you feel the lesson is too fast then slow down the playback speed in the UA-cam menu (3 dots in the upper right corner). Tony covers a lot of helpful information for this camera. Thank you Tony (2 years later)... Actually Thank You! Chelsea and Tony for the UA-cam tutorials.
As someone who has just taken up photography as a serious hobby, I can't tell you how thankful I am that I chanced upon your tutorial for my EM 1 mk 2 Your relaxed but informative style makes it easy to retain the details and get to grips with a complex menu setup. I've just bought your book from Amazon & cant wait to get reading. I've tuned in to other tutorials and find them equally informative. Thank you for what you do.
Bought the O M 1 mkii enclosed instruction manual waste of time, found this tutorial brilliant, thank you so much Tony Northrop, you should be paid by Olympus for this Video.
Great tutorial, so I bought the Oly EM1m2. I have made an excel sheet with all discussed items linked to the time schedule so that I can quickly look up where I can find an item. That works! Thank you very much Tony from the Netherlands.
Thank you for the most comprehensive and informative tutorial that I have seen for this camera. You have saved me from a huge disappointment. Not in the camera, but in myself for not working it properly! :)
I still come back in here from time to time and go over things I might have forgotten. Also bought your book "Stunning Digital Photography" and it is so worth every penny!! Thanks again~ Nancy from Virginia
Really, really wonderful clip for a (since yesterday) new E-M5ii owner as myself, that’s just a humble enthusiast that really care about build quality in a camera! Thank you soo much!
Bought "Stunning Digital Photography" a year ago and use it continuously. Great educational tool! Great tutorial! Looked at E-M1 MkII tutorial for the third time and learn something new each time. Best explanation of menu system to date. Picked up on your comments about the use of flash that I missed the last time. Looking forward to your next "how to" chapter. Rick Arlen
Thanks for this! I am trying out this camera before buying and I was overwhelmed by the camera comigg from a starter DSLR, and you have made things a lot easier
I so agree about the power on / off being in the wrong place. I switched mine . Thanks for that. Now to get used to it :) Now I am looking for continous shooting mode holding down the button. You are the best!!! I just bought the OMD em1 mk 11 for myself for Christmas I have Nikon full format and regular. When I was in the camera store I bought a huge lens for the camera and then talked about the mirrorless and ended up giving the lens back and buying that. I got a great deal and a 400.00 rebate used right away. I tried it out on Christmas day. Love it
Great overview, here are a few addons :) 2:29 you can disable the manualmode if you don't like/remember it. 6:15 press ok again, to get into the big menue. So you do not have to remember which "file" is which mode. 1:30:03 This lens is the Panasonic Lumix 20mm Pancake - not from Olympus
Excellent tutorial, Tony, as always! I have been waiting for a tutorial on the EM1 Mark II for a while now. Thank you so very much for making our lives easier! You are a great instructor and I love your work! Merci! Thanks!
Tony, at 6:26 in the video, if you hit the OK button again rather than use the front dial it takes you into the menu where you can use the arrow pad to see a full description of each record option and set the option. Then you you don't have to interpret up/down, optimist/pessimist icons. Great tutorial! Thanks for publishing it.
Thanks for this video. I just bought OMD-E-M1 Mk II and it hasn't even arrived but now I feel like I have a head start on how to navigate the functions. This was super helpful.
Great explanation of video. I've owned this camera for a few years and just went back over the tutorial as im off to Alaska,Bahama's and mexico soon. I actually forgot a few setings and this help me remember them. Thanks
I’m a relative newbie to Micro 4/3. Currently using a very nice OM-D E-M5, but hope to upgrade to good used E-M1 Mk II at some point. Even though it’s “old technology” in mid-2023, seems like it still has some life left in it. Enjoyed the hands on review!
Just got mine shipped and was reading the manual, but confused somewhat. This is amazing, I can see myself coming back to it, everytime I'm stuck and a lot easier to find things on the manual too. Cheers
Thank you so much for this manual video for my new camera. I really appreciate all the work and expertise you have put into every aspect of the camera. You are the best.
Correction: 1:30:38 You say Olympus 20mm, but show and link the Panasonic 20mm. And I agree, it is the best m43 pancake lens. It was the first one I bought for my E-P3 years ago, and I still use it regularly. Though if I want a smaller profile I usually use the E-M10. The E-M1 is just too big to be a tourist camera.
Thanks for the tutorial, Tony. Very informative. Where I was surprised is that you skipped the Fn2 MultiFunction functionality, and just chose to assign that to a single function. The default MultiFunction setting will let you have several different functions controllable through this single button; while keeping the Fn2 pressed, rotate the thumb dial to select the desired function, then release and click Fn2 again to actually adjust the selected function. Of course, whether this kind of button is useful at all depends on your style of photograhpy, as it does require serious amount of time and concentration to get from one setting to another.
But did you test the Fuji? I'm so curious in the difference in results... And how much the sensor size difference matters.... And maybe not so important for most photographers, but i like the grey look a lot. I have it with my current Olympus. And so far the one that has is it the XT-2.
Really good instructive video and I like the fact that Tony tells you what he uses in the various settings. That's a good starting point for someone new to this camera and all its various options.
@ 1:04:50 Tony, when you are in video mode you can switch between PASM easily: First, access Video Menu / Display Settings / Control Settings and check that you have activated Live Control mode. Toggle between Live SCP and Live Control mode by pressing INFO button. From the display screen in Live Control mode you can access PSAM functions which are on the right.
Clear, well paced, brilliantly helpful tutorial - thank you. Even having had the camera since it became available you have shown me things I had yet to explore.
Focus Peaking - There is a feature that I belive is not mentioned in the manual, when you are in focus peaking, hit [INFO] and then you instantly can adjust all the peaking settings
I love you guys! Thank you so much! I’m a student starting a independent photography business before fall semester. I want to try and sustain my $ through college with photography. These videos help. I really like the funny ones like “7 kinds of photographers” lol
This was an excellent video. Great information. I can't believe you offered this for free on UA-cam! I was not in the market for a book, but I'm buying yours to support your channel. Thanks!
Great, in depth, review and tutorial. One tip you missed was being able to re-position the focus point with the LCD, when your eyes are on the EVF. A bit hard to explain, but when you're looking through the EVF, instead of using the arrows to move the focus point, try sliding your thumb around the LCD display, which should be off at this point.
Thank you for this. I've been waiting for this since March this year. It's a very comprehensive overview. I wished I had seen this tutorial before buying a couple of the lenses.
As a long time Canon user, this Olympus camera has me at a loss...the tiny manual that came with camera is useless. I am searching for a definitive manual. This tutorial has been very helpful.
I have never got confused by manual and auto with the Olympus pull-back ring. It's a great feature and will only appeal to photographers that understand their camera and lens. It is far from an issue with the Olympus set up........ unless you need to pick on something
Great, easy to follow along tutorial, Tony. This is still very relevant tutorial as this camera is still a very relevant camera. Thanks for what you do.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have rented the Mk II for a couple of weeks to try it out, and this crash-course is just what I needed to get acquainted. And I love the info about using speed boosters and non-Oly lenses to improve lens speed and detail. If I end up buying any of this gear, I'll use your links for sure. Great work!
I watched your video will We cards and then decided that's enough. Life is to short and the Olympus is definitely not for me. Holy cow. Bring back film please!!!!!.
Down to earth, easy to understand, Tony steps around some of the old school DSLR ideas that have no validity on today's mirror-less marvels. Thank you sir, very well done. Does any one know if LR or PS will handle the Mark II's high res shots yet? They didn't several months back.
Tony.... I just finished watching your intro to Olympus omd em1 mk2. I bought the camera yesterday and I must say your video is simply brilliant. It is a fast track to understanding the camera......Your friendly approach is like having a best friend patiently explain the technology to someone that struggles....many thanks.....
Great tutorial but I have to disagree at 34:34 - as far as I'm aware, noise filter would ruin the star trails and other long-exposure shots, but noise reduction removes only the spots generated by the sensor heating up. It may affect star trail photos, but for nearly anything else I would keep automatic noise reduction on, and turn off the noise filter. Thanks again for your awesome tutorial!
Hey Tony and Chelsea! Are y'all gonna do a tutorial for the OM-D EM-1 Mk III anytime soon? I just got one, along with the 12-40 f/2.8 PRO lens (amazing!) and I'm really enjoying it, but the menus and settings are a bit overwhelming. I've picked up a few tips from UA-camrs and I can read the manual for about five minutes at a time before my brain starts to hurt. Help please, if you can!
Revisiting the EM1 to see if it can be a lightweight counterpart to the mighty canon. I have used the EM10 for a few years now but only for portrait type work and casual shooting. Interested to see how good the focusing works in conjunction with the frame rate (and EVF). Back to watching (sips coffee).
Hi ! A very full review of (my) Olympus E-M1 MkII... Thanks. I saw all that vIdeo... My favorit shootings are nightscape pictures... In France. Dark skies GREAT here. like so much the Live Composite mode !! Hello from South of France, called Provence... Friendly, best regards.
There is a misunderstanding in this Video: Olympus (cameras) define High Speed Continuous Focusing as high speed shooting focusing only on the initial shoot, and defines Low Speed Continuous Focusing when the camera re-focuses between each shot. In Olympus’s menu system you can go to the Custom Menu C and adjust The Release Priority so that the shutter can be released even when the camera is not in focus, with some subjects that are hard to focus on, this may give you a better keep rate.
Wow! Tony! This is an amazing tutorial. Thank you for doing this. I actually purchased the camera and was scared shiteless about really getting into it. Happy new year and all the best to you and Chelsea. jan
Thank you, I now understand my camera more than I thought I ever would.......yay!!!! Thank you soooo much Tony, can't wait to get out there now and try all the new things I have learnt :-)
Very good tutorial, always like them. A G85 and GH5 tutorial would be great if you ever have the time. most people seem to only do tutorials for the top models but I believe the G85 is a very big seller so you would get a good audience for tutorial and it would cover most of the GX85 apart from the body layout.
Way more useful, without wasting a switch [the on/off] on these cameras is to assign the switch to change from single to continuous autofocus. Click-click and you instantly switch from one to the other. Save the battery by setting it to auto-sleep quickly.
A great review and instruction video. I loved the tip about setting the screen brightness in bulb mode. I sometimes shoot daytime pics at 3--5 minutes with 10 stop NDs. I hadn't been able to figure that one out yet. You showed me many ways of setting up this camera that I hadn't got to yet.
I love this video. I've reviewed it 5 times and seem to learn something new every time. As an underwater photographer, white balance is critical. I used to rely on post processing to adjust color but found the quality of the initial image to be significantly higher if I adjust WB while in the water. When diving, my option screen is normally set to highlight the white balance cell/custom WB. I use the sequence: OK - OK- INFO - Shutter - OK while pointing at a piece of bleach bottle wrapped on my arm to set the WB for my given depth. I find I need to reset WB every 10-15 ft (3 - 5 m) in change in depth. Are you aware of more efficient ways to adjust custom WB?
There is a better JPEG setting then LF that many users are not aware of, it is LSF, large super fine. You have to dive into the menu setting for this though. The JPEGs are noticably better with LSF. Not sure why Olympus does that.
you must red my mind. So wanted this video to exist and you did it! Hope you will have a tut on the live composite too sometime but this is tons of good info. Super thanks!
Well structured and really informative video. I even learnt a few tips for configuring my camera. Really professional presentation. Thanks for sharing.
Tony, thanks for the fantastic tutorial. Looking forward to seeing your review. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the unfortunate text in the background of your selfie pic (at the 23:43 mark). No disrespect, but that gave me a bit of a chuckle. Keep up the great work.
Great video on the Olympis OM-D MK ii. Have you done a video of the Olympus Pen F? If not could you do one? I really enjoy your tutorial videos. You explain so it is easy to understand. Thanks for your and Chelsea's hard work.
My # 1 it’s you should show the button you are going to press first #2 show the main menu button first then press the button #3 once you get the main menu shown were to press first then press the highlight section and last and this is up to you divide the book in 2 sections one for rookie and the other part for advanced people and that is why I can’t use the book as it is
Sir you are the best you are very easy to follow when i think of something re the topic you mention it ....You never stop learning when it come to photography. ......Thank you >

you are probably in shutter priority (S), not manual mode (M). I did the same thing.

This is the best Olympus tutorial that I've seen. Thank you for this. When will you make a tutorial for the Olympus OMD EM 1 Mk 3?
Just bought silver one with battery grip for 550 eur... best buy camera hands down. Lenses... 1.7 45 m.zuiko second hand for 85 eur... mft is amazing.

Thank you Tony..I constantly come back to this video as the Em1.2 is complicated. Happy New Year to you and Chelsea. Keep up the great videos.
Super useful and well organized. Having just picked up this camera, referring to this video from time to time will be very handy. Thanks!
Absolutely right about the focusing ring but now I've seen your video, I'll try to remember pulling towards me is manual. Thanks.
Comprehensive review of what looks like a great camera. That aside about shutter speeds was very useful. Thanks.
Happy new year and all the best to you and Chelsea. jan
Just got the MKii, thanks for taking the time to save me some time on the menus. awesome vid
We have both those planned... these videos just take a lot of time and effort. It's really exhausting.
Tony & Chelsea Northrup thx that you are still doing this at this high quality! !
Way more useful, without wasting a switch [the on/off] on these cameras is to assign the switch to change from single to continuous autofocus. Click-click and you instantly switch from one to the other. Save the battery by setting it to auto-sleep quickly.
Thanks for the video, I can't imagine how much work does it take to prepare for a video like this. Keep up the good work :)
Glad to help!
Thank you. Very helpful as usual. Looking forward to a full review.
There is a better JPEG setting then LF that many users are not aware of, it is LSF, large super fine. You have to dive into the menu setting for this though. The JPEGs are noticably better with LSF. Not sure why Olympus does that.
This was a fantastic tutorial Tony - Thanks heaps. Bathurst NSW Australia
I know it’s been 6 years, but L SF is the best quality jpg. Very helpful video nonetheless 🎉🎉
I wish I could hit thumbs up more. This is a great companion video to the camera. Tony's books are also great. Thanks!
you must red my mind. So wanted this video to exist and you did it!
Hope you will have a tut on the live composite too sometime but this is tons of good info. Super thanks!
Well structured and really informative video. I even learnt a few tips for configuring my camera. Really professional presentation. Thanks for sharing.
One mistake...In video mode that is the battery amount left not the video time left...but an awesome video to say the least..thanks Tony
Thank you Tony, find your in depth review superb, moving from EM1 to 2, great camera system, smaller, lighter, faster, cheaper, what,s not to like?
Tony, thanks for the fantastic tutorial. Looking forward to seeing your review. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the unfortunate text in the background of your selfie pic (at the 23:43 mark). No disrespect, but that gave me a bit of a chuckle. Keep up the great work.
Thanks man. You did a great job teaching.
Great video on the Olympis OM-D MK ii. Have you done a video of the Olympus Pen F? If not could you do one? I really enjoy your tutorial videos. You explain so it is easy to understand. Thanks for your and Chelsea's hard work.
My # 1 it’s you should show the button you are going to press first #2 show the main menu button first then press the button #3 once you get the main menu shown were to press first then press the highlight section and last and this is up to you divide the book in 2 sections one for rookie and the other part for advanced people and that is why I can’t use the book as it is
Thank you for this awesome tutorial and the other work you do.
Would love to see you do a setting set up for the new OMD 1 Mark iii
Great video Tony! I need to watch it again, so much information to digest.
Sir you are the best you are very easy to follow when i think of something re the topic you mention it ....You never stop learning when it come to photography. ......Thank you >
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial!
Just upgraded from my Mk 1 - helpful guide
