The first time I heard this song was the last time I listened to songs without paying attention to the lyrics. Like most of Leonard Cohen's musical poetry, the more I listen to this song, the more it rings true to me.
We would just like to say So long Mr Cohen, may you rest in peace, and may your poetry live forever.

I started to pay attention to the Lyrics when I was 13 and that was in 1972. That's when I've started to like good music as Dylan, Cohen, Simon&Garfunkel, Shaw Phillips, Cat Stevens, Donovan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, Carol king, the early works of Elton John , The Doors, Janis, Hendrix, The Band, just to name a few
If you're a lyric lover..find any artist on SONIC FOXX MUSIC....all the songs began with the lyric...and the rest just fell into place.

Shortly before her death, Cohen found out about his old friend's condition and penned her a letter. Here are his beautiful words.
"Well Marianne it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.
And you know that I’ve always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road.”
that quote makes chills go up and down my arms - I read it last week and thought that when it is my turn to go, I would hope to be so eloquent, so resolved and apparently at peace.

And Leonard WAS 'close behind' her - he died in November, just 3 months after Marianne Ihlen's passing away (Oslo, Norway, July 2016)... ;-(

Jack is great. Leonard was, and always will be, legendary. A lyrical master. Check out ‘If It Be Your Will’, ‘In My Secret Life’, ‘Closing Time’, or pretty much anything he wrote.

This is a fantastic cover! IMO, this is really difficult song to do right. As with so many of his songs, you can hear the meaning of the lyrics in the way he sings them; there's pain and joy and catharsis. Most people just try to make the song sound pretty so they forego the pain, which, as far as I'm concerned, goes completely sucks the soul out of the music and turns a beautiful love letter set to music into just another song. I think you captured it quite well.

Of all Jacks amazing covers during lockdown This is orobably my all time favourite alongside his duet he did with Connie, when Bill Withers passed away. Everytime i hear a new cover that he always does even better than the original The two songs i mentioned still are my favourites.
