    A small update:
As of August 16th 2017, Harmony Gold has apparently filed a civil suit against Tatsunoko Productions in California district court. So far there's no word on why, but there's a chance this could get fairly interesting down the line. Stay tuned, I guess!

As far as I know this is an arbitration case.Though not directly related to their "licensing" agreement with Macross this may well affect Harmony Gold's renewal of their "license" on 2021 with Tatsunoko since they don't seem to be in good terms anymore. They also recent;y sued Batlletech (again) particularly Harebrained Schemes, Pirahna Games, and jordan Weisman for their redesigns of the "Unseen" mechs in MWO. I think HG is desperate for money and need as much of before their license expires and to help get their Robotech move off the ground. www.pacermonitor.com/public/case/22233392/Harmony_Gold,_USA,_Inc_v_Tatsunoko_Production_Co,_Ltd

Harmony Gold is a product of the 1980's way of scamming money by being lawsuit-happy just to make money off of a franchise they have NO idea how to market right. All they want is just to make lawsuits and deal under the table (as in settle) out of court for money. It's basically just about the money and how much they can get away with it. I hope that company dies a horrible death along with rights going back to the original creators of the show to be able to market them here through a better company OTHER than Harmony fucking Gold. A fucking real estate company has no business in film and entertainment at all. It's thanks to them that we have to pay double to almost triple the price of recent Macross Toys because they can't get a local foothold here. Some scalpers auction a few of the toys from Yamato/Arcadia, Bandai, etc up to almost $1000 USD depending on the rarity and demand.

I just want to see Harmony Gold lose their rights, have to sell Robotech to someone else, and then that new company divorces it from the source material, and we get a franchise that draws inspiration from Macross, but with none of the legal issues, Kinda like how that new Voltron cartoon bears just a passing resemblance to the original Go-Lion series, but it is unmistakably Voltron.

As a big anime fan of the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross franchise, I didn't like Harmony Golds rename the franchise to Robotech, and intended to capitalize on popularity of its series along with the merchandise such as model kits toys soundtracks, and later the game itself Robotech Battlecry.

NO im sry but all Harmony Gold does is sue company who may have in the PAST copyrighted there designs but TODAY dont look like anymore like the NEW BattleTech which was Bought by a NEW DIFFERENT Company who picked up on it to revive the series and wanted to get RID OFF the Copyrighted designs BUT keep the NAMES for Nostalgia BUT NEW Design Robots that DONT look like RoboTechs. BUT Harmony is gonna ride the sue train stating they still own the 80s even though there. not even bringing it up. Harmony just wants Money. Again theres NO ISSUE about. and BattleTech Company BEFORE had there copy designs since 84. SO WHY IS IT AN ISSUE NOW!!!!??? why didn't u stop BT in the 80s. O WAIT cause a NEW Company is doming in with FRESH NEW Designs and were planning on making a video game of it.O SHIT They must have BIG BUCKS to do it. little do they know we can strike now then back then cause we were to dumb to forget about the 80s...like how did they not see them before
and Harmony Gold didn't buy Macross. they TOOK IT For there OWN Story, STOLED COPYWRITTEN Story and butchered it
so YA Harmony Gold needs to burn in a shithole and Die.
Nobody wants them. they don't even try to do ANYTHING with RoboTech. they let it die and RoboTech shouldn't be the story it was. its like watching the STAR WARS SPECIAL EDITIONS WITHOUT Seeing the ORIGINAL THEATRICAL CUT. Macross Story was 10x better then wat it became. and the DUB of SDF Macross is WAY Better and AMAZING then RoboTechs bullshit. the ONLY THING i like about RT is the Music Soundtrack was actually OK GOOD. and the Voice actor of Roy Focker NOT RT Fokker. Focker is the ORIGINAL Name as it was a Reference to a family last name of a fly boy in the 1930s last name Focker written on the Plane.

I had no idea they were that corrupt. I haven't watched Robotech/Macross since I was a kid but without new content coming in (after the books and comic books ended/were cancelled), I thought the franchise just faded away. I recently just rewatched the HG version on Netflix and all these old feelings for this amazing franchise are resurfaced. Now that I know the truth about them, I'm grabbing the torches and pitchforks. And ordering me some Japanese Blu-Rays.
    Harmony Gold must be destroyed.

2020 update: the original IS here airing subbed on Pluto TV. It's the same as the version on Amazon Prime. Southern Cross and Mospeada are also there uncut and subbed. HOW is FilmRise, who bought the master license from Harmony Gold and FilmRise has a very different idea of what to do with what they now own, namely put everything on TV and let people see it. Here. Have Macross complete with Minmay's shower scenes. It's not yet a total cure for Harmony Gold's BS but it's a major step in the right direction.

About a decade or so ago, ADV Films (back when they still existed, but that's another story) released an English version of Macross based on its original form, not the Robotech rewrite. I had gone to AnimeExpo and actually had the chance to speak to the ADR Director Matt Greenfield (I still wanna call him Hyuga, to this very day, LOL). I had asked him about the Macross movie "Do You Remember Love" and if they had plans to dub that one too, and he told me plainly that not only would it be impossible due to how Harmony Gold has a death grip on the copyrights (it was already a nightmare to do the series itself, legally), but because of all that Harmony Gold has done, Japan has basically forbidden any Western English dubs of the movie. That is when I gave up on HG entirely.

I wouldn't have known about anime or Macross if not for Robotech. That being said, Macross is by far one of my favorite animes and it makes me sick that HG has gone this far to protect something that otherwise could be making them money. I also grew up playing Battletech. Pheonix Hawk was and still is one of my favorite mechs. I was glad to see a revamp in the Project Pheonix book but went many years just living on tech readouts that were old and falling apart just to have it. Robotech was the reason I got into battletech.
I hope some how they collapse in the near future. That way we can see both a good Robotech reboot or continuation and still get Macross.

So I was reading more into Tatsunko extending the Harmony Gold's license on this article site, and I found this neat little comment that I think was worth reposting:
"Not a Lawyer but, I read the article and it seems to be promising. It states that “In 2017 the upholding of the license agreement made it clear Big West still owns those 41 characters designs and Tatsunoko owns the commercial rights to the Macross series.” so it looks to me like Tatsunoko made it clear to HG that they (Tatsunoko) owns Macross with BIG WEST owning the character designs. So HG still gets the commercial release rights in US but ONLY to the original Macross series which is repackaged as Robotech. IF I’m right in my assumptions HG got smacked down HARD! Rumor has it that Tatsunoko and BIG WEST were pissed at HG for basically claiming that they owned Macross and everything in Robotech so they would’ve clarified the original agreement which WASN’T written on a napkin (how dumb do HG think we are?) so that HG wasn’t crapping all over the ACTUAL copyright holders. I just hope that people start bringing Macross into the west now, I want Zero, Seven, Frontier and Delta subbed in HD on Blu-Ray NOW!"
Maybe Harmony Gold will in fact make subs after all?

You can count battletech funs too in there, the original battletech had several mechs that came from the macross franchise and they got the license to use them in their games from tatsunoko production.
Every since then every time something from battletech even features one of those iconic mechs it gets shut down by harmony gold with copyright strikes, mechwarrior 5 had to be cancelled because in the trailer they showed one of those mechs.
    And the funny thing?
They don't even OWN those characters, they have a dubious ownership over a derivated work in which they are represented, but people don't have money to fight them in court so they get away with it.

    • @artemusprine

Which according to this video weren't Tatsunoko's to sell... Seems pretty clear that Harmony Gold believe or at least want to act like they have rights to the characters and designs but Tatsunoko only had distribution rights... hardly the same thing.
But the real shame is that Carl Macek (a) didn't grab Orguss instead of Mospeada and (b) never thought to simply say the shows were "thematically linked", like the Final Fantasy series. I can't help but imagine all three Super Dimensional series having aired in the West intact without re-naming or re-writing, and without the legal BS...

HG was GRANTED the right to use the SDF Macross TV footage by Tatsunoko.
Please get off your high horse, do some reading, and step back into reality instead of being a fanboy. You LOOK RIDICULOUS to adults and anybody that's read about this case. Damning Carl Macek (RIP) or even Harmony Gold doesn't change the fact that TATSUNOKO HAS THE LEGAL INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS to SDF Macross (TV)!
And FYI, I wouldn't count on the rest of Macross being that popular in the US. Have you actually SEEN those shows? Half of them are crap! Gundam has a better percentage of decent shows! The best part of Macross is STILL the original series BY FAR, and as the most popular portion of the franchise it gets the most new models, statues, and toys. The last series, Macross Delta, was a joke. It's an idol series aimed at very little kids and it's the third or fourth time the original VF-1 design was recycled and altered for a Macross sequel series so even the mecha design stinks!
Anime in the West is doing just fine without the original Macross.
They sold about as many Macross DVD sets as could be expected through AnimEigo's mail program in 2000. I think I heard around 10,000 sets might have been sold which is pretty darn good for the US anime industry. It was a good number of pre-orders. ADV did a later release of the SDF Macross TV series on DVD with a dub but ADV's release of SDF Macross was a HUGE sales dud and the English dub for that release has been disavowed since. It WASN'T a very good dub and the Japanese audio on that DVD release was VERY tinny which is a shock because the AnimEigo DVD release had EXCELLENT audio quality... The ADV DVD release of Robotech was probably one of that company's biggest sellers in its entire history and FAR OUTSOLD ADV's Macross release and probably AnimEigo's set, too. It did VERY well for them and revived Robotech for a short while before ADV's rights expired and HG granted the Robotech home video rights to A&E.
Macross 7 couldn't even be licensed in the mid-1990s because of all the record company deals. Whoever licensed that show would have to deal with the Japanese record companies, too, if they wanted to keep the original audio track intact and NOBODY wanted to deal with that crap!
By the late 1990s, it was obvious Big West no longer wanted to deal with any Western video companies because of the LOUSY CO-PRODUCTION AGREEMENT Studio Nue made with Tatsunoko back in the early 1980s! Big West and Studio Nue lost a TON of potential licensing money they could have earned from Robotech and that money went to Tatsunoko who Big West later sued. The guys who founded Studio Nue didn't know how to run a productioncompany and were always short on cash. They made a co-production agreement with Tatsunoko in exchange for an infusion cash and MUCH-NEEDED production assistance and guidance from Tatsunoko which had been around for 20 years by the time Studio Nue was started. Those naive young guys AGREED to let Tatsunoko have the international distribution rights to SDF Macross without A) putting a limit on the length of time that Tatsunoko would keep those distribution rights and B) placing a legal demand for Studio Nue to be recognized as the creators of Macross IN THE CREDITS for Robotech!
The legal matter of Macross ownership and distribution was decided years ago in Japanese court. When the Tokyo court ruled on the distribution rights for SDF Macross (TV), they split the rights between Tatsunoko Productions and Studio Nue. Tatsunoko kept worldwide distribution (outside of Japan; in Japan Big West/Studio Nue control ALL the Macross franchise) to SDF Macross TV ONLY... The rest of the Macross franchise AND the character and vehicle designs for SDF Macross are still controlled by Big West/Studio Nue. That Robotech movie HG is developing won't look ANYTHING like Macross because they're not allowed to use the Macross vehicle designs unless they pay a licensing fee to Studio Nue and they won't do that!
If anything, it's Big West that is SCREWING THEMSELVES out of money. They have been approached by different companies to license other parts of the Macross franchise but all Western video companies have been TURNED DOWN for at least the last 25 years!!! AnimEigo wanted to license "Do You Remember Love" and release it in North America but the BW company rep wouldn't even talk to them because he was completely biased against Western companies. That rep was a COLOSSAL IDIOT. AnimEigo is NOT Harmony Gold or Celebrity Entertainment (the company that licensed Do You Remember Love in the 1980s and edited it into Clash of the Bionoids for VHS release in the US; btw, the Japanese supervised the English dub of DYRL which is why Bionoids sucks. The English dub sucked even before it was edited!!!). AnimEigo went through legal routes and ended up at HG's doorstep because THEY were Tatsunoko's reps for SDF Macross (TV) in North America. And that's how that story ended up with the 2000 release of Macross TV on DVD in the US...

Harmony Gold and Big West are to blame, but Harmony Gold is the culprit, since they took the US rights of all the Macross license to prevent the release of Macross for more than 30 years now. Big West won't license Macross sequels and OVAs to Harmony Gold with their name on it, as a huge middle finger to them. As a big fan of Macross I think that this series was baned from western countries because there is a political message in the series. Recently I was reading that the main wars in the world are the psycho war and the main main war in the world is the cultural war. Then as a Macross fan I think this series the main theme of all Macross universe series talk about cultural war. I really don't know much about politics but I watch this relation. It's not easy to watch this two aspects in the Macross series but it's more evident to watch in in "Macross 2" it's a 5 chapter series where the main character is a journalist, suddenly he finds how the government banned the true about the war, and the alien enemy control his soldiers by psycho music same as humans use Minmei to produce a cultural shock to the enemy. But my main idea of the Macross series is that different cultures can be friends, just need to learn about each other cultures and understand that our governments control our presentation to fight vs other cultures. All the people in Macross series want peace, even aliens people want peace, but governments don't want it. This message I think is very powerful for me. But HG being the pricks they were/are they filed a law suit against FASA and being pretty new FASA agreed to stop using them. Clue me in again on one thing, based on what I've been watching here and reading in the comments and elsewhere: Harmony Gold's copyright on 'Macross' expires in 4 years, yes? And they've had plans at one time or another to make a live-action Macross or Robotech film (similar to 'Ghost in the Shell') before then, no?
If Harmony Gold's hold on Macross expires in 2021, do ALL of whatever rights they had on Macross revert back to Shoji Kawamori and Tatsunoko? And quite frankly, I don't think they will EVER make it in time (that is, before 2021) to release a live-action Macross movie. They're spending all of their money on lawyers, and given the scandals and corruption they've been involved in, I don't think they have nearly enough money to make such a film with the big budget that it's going to require...
...Besides, the last thing they made of any sort of quality (yet highly controversial) was the original 'Shaka Zulu'. They've basically freeloaded for the last 2 decades on the success of Macross. Cut and paste is all they are good at. I went looking for 'Lensman' (first presented in Japan in 1984) at eBay in 2000, and there were 2 VHS versions; the heavily-edited Harmony Gold version from 1988, and the unedited Streamline version from 1990, the same version televised in 1992 by SYFY (formerly the Sci-Fi Channel). Fortunately, I chose the right one, and it still sits in my video collection, waiting for me to transfer to DVD because Streamline went belly-up in 2002. [By the way, I have read all 7 of Doc Smith's original 'Lensman' novels.]
Now, we all wait for Harmony Gold to buy the farm. If they can't make a live-action Macross in the next 4 years, they probably will. Then again, if they try to rush the project, it is highly likely they will cut corners with the shoestring budget they will likely have, and it will flop, and that too will be the end for HG...
...And just in time for Macross' 40th Anniversary.

We're talking *2054* here! I'll be close to _90_ or *dead* by then! HG has either been teetering on bankruptcy or riding the razor's edge toward a court-ordered liquidation for various improprieties for 15 years now! Just how bad was Tatsunoko's financial situation for them to make this deal with the devil?
This is disgusting in so many ways; one being that I can't imagine them doing any sort of justice to _Robotech_ with the movie they have planned. If they can't come up with a decent preview, let alone the whole product, within the next 2 years, then it's quite likely that they've been pulling everyone's leg since 2017 (if not earlier). If they attempt to go big-budget and it flops hard (which I believe it will), it'll bankrupt HG. Again, Tatsunoko can buy back the rest of the rights to the original Macross for the price of a Lamborghini.
Fortunately, I bought a DVD collection of the original Macross series 12 years ago (quite probably considered unauthorized now), and I have both versions of Macross Plus on DVD in their original North American packages (all English dubbed). I do respect Macek's original intentions regarding Macross and the subsequent creation of the Robotech series, but I do despise HG for their stupidity and greed. I honestly wish I could run HG and set the record straight with us fans, by this I mean, Macek had no intention of depriving us, anime fans, of Macross, he just wanted to bring more anime to us in the US. Unfortunately to do that, he was forced to take some steps which HG is now misguidedly exploiting in order to get as much cash as they can, you know, the legal stuff. HG is more than misguided, they are illogical and nonsensical regarding their attempts and by doing that, they have killed Robotech in the process. I guess HG did first what New Lucasfilm/Disney and CBS are now doing with Star Wars and Star Trek, each company trying to satisfy their God, Greed, by sacrificing their most loved franchises. It is incredible that this is happening. I wish Macek's legacy is cleared soon and Macross fans understand that it was not him responsible for what's happening with HG.

Based on what I have been seeing on UA-cam, I guess that was a lie.

If Harmony Gold hadn't purchased Macross, we wouldn't have Robotech.

Well,.... despite all their bad, they did bring macross to the USA is some form or another. Made this person a fan at 9 yrs old who used to wake up at 4:30 in the morning to just catch the show from a fuzzy UHF channel from Philadelphia. There was some positive that came from it.

Like many of you, I grew up watching some of the greats. Star Blazers, Mazinger Z, Battle of the Planets, etc. But when Robotech first premiered in 1985, I fell in love with Anime. ( We used to call it Japanimation! ) After watching Robotech in syndication, I began collecting the VHS releases which only had 2 episodes per tape & they were not cheap! After Robotech, I looked for anything that was Japanese. So in a way, I must give many thanks to Harmony Gold for introducing us to the world of Macross. Having said that, I think that what Harmony Gold has been allowed to get away with for decades now, is a great injustice! I'm just hoping that after the contract expires in 2021, we'll finally get Macross again in North America!

Oddly enough, Revell [the model company] and Hasbro [duh] are also partially to blame [or where in the beginning] for the licensing circus that came of this.

    • @jayden6538

Revell is a great company, they were the ones who made the Robotech name with mecha model kits imported from Japan. It was going to be a tie-in to a DC comic, but that was cancelled after 2 issues.

I figured there was some political dispute, but boy, didn't know it went that far.
I also figured that it was because if Macross was ever to be dubbed, they'd have to make english covers of all the songs because music is such a central theme with the franchise. Alas, nowadays when animes are dubbed now its only given the bare minimum with the dialogue.

I really hope harmony gold goes out of business because of this pandemic in the meantime they’re not getting any of my money I recommend everyone do the same, the only way we can get Macross officially in the west is if HG goes out of business and have no choice but to sell the rights on international distribution outside of Asia.

Simple answer. Yes, rights being primary. But seriously, only Macross Plus has been the only iteration that is worthwhile. Thankfully that release was handled by another company other than HG.

    Back in the
days of the planned release of the Toycom Macross Plus toys, HG's
tactics were to bully small toy retailers to assert and reinforce their
rights to all things Macross outside of Japan. The hypocrisy is that
they went after small retailers (die hard fans like me) who didn't move much of any Macross
product stateside while other larger retailers (who imported toys in container size batches) were left alone.

I think that originally, before Robotech and Harmony Gold, they wanted the series to be known to the US like Gundam.
I may be wrong, but Harmony Gold would be forced to relinquish all their rights by 2021, four years from now, due to being found partially/fully breaching the original contract with Tatsunoko. I don't know if this would have an effect on the Macross franchise but lets not get our hopes up too soon.
That information for the above paragraph is according to this link: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Anime/Robotech

A show basically about vehicles, mecha, speed, driving, flying, technology....
and giants. Just censor the parts with Dana. You can almost hear the studios ready to buy out HG.

I cautiously hope Sony Pictures will buy it someday, a few years after its pending acquisition of Crunchyroll from Warner Bros. It already has problems with its former fans, but luckily, because the oldest Sony division is Japanese, the former’s employees will learn and must learn from their mistakes and get over them, so they’ll fire the notorious Agrama family into bankruptcy.

1980s...I was a kid back then who really got interested in mecha anime after watching Robotech, Gobots, and Transformers. Is these legal battles over Macross/Robotech worth it even in these times? Is Macross/Robotech even relevant in these times. If ever Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (the start of it all) will finally be brought back to life and continue its legendary run, whether be rebooted, remaked or continued (as long as its canon -- which is what matters most), in animation or live action, will it be worth it? I hope so...and even dreamed that it will be just as successful like the Transformers franchise, to give more tribute to both the Japanese and American people who dubbed and gave life to this legendary show. In spite of the not so perfect dubbing, sometimes not so good and inconsistent drawings, it was a story told that kids those times can appreciate visually and they will love when they grow old. This anime just paved the way and has touched and inspired so many lives...
