The scene with Ol' Towser and Lucy is quietly wonderful. The dialogue is very well written and details their characters really well: Towser a no nonsense reliable country fella, Lucy someone looking for a bit of novelty in what was probably a dull rural life. The voice acting is amazing, and the starry background with the night Suffolk landscape is lovely. A great scene to watch again and again. And as someone said, Tibbs is the real hero of the picture!
In the immediate next scene as the Colonel receives the message, he speaks of long and short barks. I think we are intended to interpret the twilight bark as a canine Morse code.
I'm glad in this dog-focused story that there are no cat villains. That trope has been worn to the bone, so it's good to see a character like Sergeant Tibbs who goes against the status quo.
Strange because dogs and cat don't fight in real life, not from what i've seen and i've seen lot of then living together! Even sleeping in the same bed
There are so many animated movies today that suffer from the syndrome "Too many characters, not enough plot." What still amazes me about THIS movie is that there are so many characters, main characters and secondary and side characters, but every one of them is there for a reason and none of them feel superfluous or tacked on. Not only that, every one of them feels like a unique character on their own, even those who are in only one scene.
0:31 two actors, Martha Wentworth and Tudor Owen, reunited together when they respectively voiced Madam Mim/Granny Squirrel and one of the background knights in the Sword in the Stone, which unfortunately was their final film roles before retiring their acting careers, same goes to Barbara Jo Allen, who voiced Fauna in Sleeping Beauty. Also reunited were Thurl Ravenscroft, Rick Sorensen, and possibly Junius Matthews since no records show who voiced Scottie, which he would not have screen credit in 101 Dalmatians if he voiced him.
I really like the touch that the cat is sleeping on the horses back. They actually do that if the horse and cats willing. The cat gets a place to sleep and the horses get comfort .

@Olivija Strandjord I might have an answer for the cat. In soldier camps during wartime, a stray cat or a number of them could be seen hunting rats and mice, helping keep the population in check. Often, the soldiers would pay little attention to the cats for this reason. In some cases, the cats would grow attached to a particular soldier and become domesticated after some time. Perhaps, Sgt Tibbs was one of these cases.
The sign at the gate of the property details that it's the residence of retired Major General S.F. Smedley, of the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers (a cavalry regiment in the British Army until 1960, a year before this movie released.) The symbol on the Captain's blanket is, correctly, the regimental badge of that unit. I miss when movie makers actually gave a damn about these kinds of details.
Did you know that Sergeat Tibbs' original name was Pussywillow in The One Hundred And One Dalmatians novel by Dodie Smith? I read about it in the pop up trivia facts on 📀.
I've made a video of the Sword in the Stone parody with a cast of Luke Skywalker as Wart, the Globglogabgalab as Merlin, Rabbit as Archimedes (even though they were both voiced by Junius Matthews), Bagheera as Sir Ector (Even though they were both voiced by Sebastian Cabot), Balto as Sir Kay, Grimhilde as Madam Mim, Fauna as the Scullery Maid (even though they were both voiced by Barbara Jo Allen), Captain as Sir Bart (even though they were both voiced by Thurls Ravenscroft) and Tower as one of the Knights in the crowd (even though they were both voiced by Tudor Owen)

Let’s admit it: Sgt. Tibbs was the MVP of this movie

it's funny how the twilight bark is more accurate with the messages then any human attempt at playing telephone.
In the immediate next scene as the Colonel receives the message, he speaks of long and short barks. I think we are intended to interpret the twilight bark as a canine Morse code.
I also love the fact that it travels this far and the colonel screws up message immediately.
I like the detail that the animals live with an old army guy so that's why they're all military esque.

That, and it's a very simplistic plot, too. It's a children's fairy tale but sometimes simple is what's most effective.
