Ya I was stationed at MCBH and not only is it the best Marine base, it's probably one of the nicest us bases in the world. Has one of the best beaches on Oahu to itself Pyramid rock, you can rent a boat on base and go party on the K Bay sandbar, top notch golf course overlooking the ocean, Very nice E club, free shuttles to and from Waikiki on the weekends. I miss it..

Been to each base you've named and as with MCB Butler- Okinawa, on Hawaii, Kanehoe your stuck on a rock. Camp Pendleton is #1. Not only do you have party life in the big cities, SD,LA, LV, you got snowy mountains, Deserts, Camping, the works.

My favorite duty was a med cruise out of Lejeune. We hit a new port about every 6-10 days. Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Cannes, Nice, Monaco plus Sicily, Sardinia and Rome. Gibraltar, Port Said in Egypt, Cyprus and Malta. Of course we had to pull duty in Beirut for 30 days with another 20 days in Naples. As an NCO when in port I volunteered for shore patrol. That way I got to go ashore even on my duty day.

How could you forget 29 Palms? 29 Palms is universally despised by anybody that’s participated in ITX, CAX or Mojave Viper, however, I’ve never met anybody stationed there that didn’t love it. Camaraderie is super tight, facility’s, activities and amenities are excellent. SoCal and Vegas are close, and the guns, dirt bike and off roading scenes are unparalleled. I’ve never been stationed there, but have been to 29 many times (I’m a retired Comm guy), and know tons of folks who loved it. In fact, a friend that just got orders to 29 from Pendleton and him and his wife are psyched! It’s a cool spot where you will genuinely feel like a Marine if you’re stationed there.

Marine Infantry try to get a Victor unit and get in a MEU to the med. You never know what happens. I was 18 yrs old, months out of HS and in Kosovo with the mindset of "that escalated quickly"

Beaufort isn’t bad and neither is Parris Island if you’re a Marine (definitely sucks as a recruit). Savannah and Charleston are both an hour away or less, Jacksonville Florida is like 2 hours, Charlotte is like 4.

I earned my EGA and became a proficient rifleman in Camp Pendleton. I hope I get stationed there. Plus I’m currently at my MOS school in 29 Palms, so once I hit the fleet it should just be a 3 hour bus ride to Pendleton, if that’s where my PDS is.

MCBH is the worst duty station by far. So expensive, so many tourists, middle of nowhere in the ocean. After a while you’ve already done everything there is to do. The base itself is small, old, and garbage absolutely nothing on base. It’s a good visiting state not a good state to live in. I’ve been stationed there for about a year and I want to move to Camp Pendleton for sure. I’d rather be at twenty nine palms than Hawaii it’s that bad.

I spent 10 months at 29 Palms in 1973-74 for electronics school. Back then the PX was a Quonset hut and the bowling alley only had 3 lanes. Not much to do on base and town was 5 or 6 miles from our barracks(very few marines had cars). On Fridays you could catch an express bus to the USO in Hollywood for $5 returning Sunday. USO had free beds and showers. Made for a fun weekend. Base pay for a PFC then was $277 a month. I got about $100 each payday.

My experience revealed that unlike the Chair Force and other branches, attractive duty stations was never one of the Marines finer points. Subic bay and the Canal Zone posts were the best but now both decades gone. K-Bay is most popular now even while Marines insist it's entirely too expensive for low paid military personnel.

I was on Hawaii and no it's not it. Everyone I was there with, hated it. Why? Because once you do the beach....... there ain't much left. You get "island fever" and the locals hate you. Even the base is tiny, you run into the same people all over the place. MCBH sounds cool... but it quickly gets old.

Camp Lejeune is just all around horrible. The training areas are swamp lands, there's absolutely nothing to do on base, and, if you want to do anything off base you need a car. No public transportation (at least when I was stationed there) outside of taxi cabs. It's just bad, being stationed there feels like a punishment after being at other bases.
