He was an exchange student in Wichita, Kansas. He went to a Metallica - Guns n Roses show in Kansas City when he was there, which changed his life.

One (Night-)wish: let us all, people living on this beautiful planet, try to grow as high as our Tuomas has!

I think this was in 2006, less than a year after splitting with Tarja, after the backlash from that ordeal, where he was in a deep depression. He had gone back to be with his family, where he found the courage and inspiration to move forward. This is probably around the time he wrote The Poet and the Pendulum, where he expressed that anguish. The final movement of the song being inspired by words from his mother, probably around his time. It was before he wrote the music for the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Also before selecting Anette as the next singer of the band. He is definitely in a better place now. I think he is more comfortable in his own skin, more outgoing, though still quite introverted. I think he still occasionally longs for the innocence and happiness of his youth, but has also matured. He has married since. No kids. He’s a very interesting guy, and a certified genius in my book.

He is so unique person and character .... that makes him to put songs out instead of commentary and speak....he has his modesty left even though he has done great in music business and got money and fame etc. but he still is like a genuine "innocent escapist child".

Wow Oh Wow Tuomas is such a down to earth person and can see Family and Friends are very important to him. I can’t imagine if he was from here. He would probably have the ego and attitude like the rock stars have here. I’ve noticed that about these Finnish bands and musicians like Arjen Luccasen and the music he puts out. Tuomas is such a talented composer, musician, Person and all of the above. I’ve seen Nightwish live with ALL THREE singers and it has truly been an honor to see this band grow and Mature. I also love Emppu he is such a great guitarist and human being.

As other here have said, Tuomas seems to be doing really well. A lot of it came from himself, but I do think meeting certain people have helped hem tremendously.
Johanna, having someone who understands him and who he can be completely himself with. A safe haven.
Troy, who helped him expand his mind even more.
Floor, whose talent allowed Tuomas to be able to compose without limitations.
You can even hear it in the music, his early music was directed very internally, his later music externally.
It seems the turmoil inside him has settled a bit.

    Tuomas is a interested person
to me, this humble nature loving guy, who basicly is a bit withdrawn with some stuff, but also share a lot, he feel his surroundings strong, and make impact where he is.
Tuomas is An Beautiful narrator 💙

This was filmed in 2006. End of an Era concert, the last one with Tarja, was in 2005, Anette was hired in 2007. Tuomas wrote "The Poet and the Pendulum" before Anette joined Nightwish, aroud the time this documentary was shot. Therefore Marko sang the whole song alone on the demo version.
I think "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" by Don Rosa is from 1999. I believe Tuomas got the idea to write a soundtrack album for the graphic novel right away when he read it, wanting to turn the pictures, drawings, stories into misic. This documentary was made 7 years later. But it took him 8 more years, totally 15 years, to make it happen in 2014.
A couple of years before that Tuomas went to see Don Rosa when he was promoting his work in Finland and introduced himself and told him about wanting to write music inspired by his novel. Don Rosa was like "Yeah, right!" He knew nothing about Tuomas or Nightwish, and thought he'd propably never hear from Tuomas again. A couple of years later Tuomas contacted Don Rosa, saying the recordings for the album are going on in London. And Don Rosa was thinking: "I think I'm going to have to pretend that I like the music when I hear it."
But there is a video in 3 parts, only 6 minutes altogether, that tells the story better than me: "Holopainen and Rosa interviewed by Radio Nova". It's interesting and funny. They are both very humble and modest. They praise each other and you can see how difficult it is for both of them to hear that. I highly recommend you watch it.
There is a video about a 7,5 hour signing event they had together in Tampere.
The last two Nightwish albums are more about science than fantasy. That's a big change.
In the documentary "Please Learn the setlist in 48 hours", Tuomas told he used to throw up before concerts because he was such a perfectionist, afraid of making mistakes. Then he said, not anymore, the fear has gone away. Mistakes are ok, it's only human.
I think Tuomas and Johanna became a couple around 2009, got married in 2017, quietly. They design crossword puzzles as a hobby, but their work has been published as well. Johanna does the drawing, as far as I know. I think they are ment to be, they are soulmates. It'is said that opposites attract. That's not the case with those two.
The new documentary, 50 minutes, "Once Upon a time in Kitee", already mentioned in another comment, is very interesting. You get to meet The godfather of Nightwish,
Plamen Dimov, a Bulgarian musician/music teacher. He fell in love with a Finn, moved to Kitee in 1980's. He knew Tuomas, Emppu, Jukka and Tarja long before Nightwish. Young Tuomas played saxofone in Plamen's jazz band. Plamen sang a love duet with young Tarja. He called Tarja's father Teuvo to ask if that was appropriate. Teuvo's answer was very funny.
Maybe 10 years ago Plamen and Nightwish fan musicians from a few dozen countries wanted to have some kind of an event in Kitee. It was first called Nightwish Days, then Nightwish week, and now Kitee international Music and Art Festival, KIMAF.
One of my favorite videos is: "Performance for Tuomas Holopainen" A choir of Nightwish fans, Ocean Souls, sing to Tuomas his music. Tuomas is blushing and speechless, stuttering when he thanks the choir and Dean Kopri, a pianist, arranger from Croatia. He's really into Nightwish. He deserves his place in the permanent Nightwish exhibition in Kitee.
At the end when Tuomas speaks and responds to the performance the audio is quite poor - it is a fan recorded video. If you, or anyone else, can hear exactly what Tuomas says, it would be great to have it in writing in the comments section. (I've tried so hard to hear what he says, believe you me, but some of it I just can't figure out.)

Hi Suesue! I recognize so much same characteristics as Tuomas has, in my exsistence, trying to live a certain life in a certain right way or some, on this planet. Really don't wanna loose anything from those old days and trying to keep them as close as possib with me and esp. KORG synths (as I interpretate it, Tuomas always uses KORG KARMA and the best synth ever, the KRONOS!) helped me with drawing those pictures and scenes from the past via black and white keys. There's something in those machines, which makes magic happen! Thanks, lady, nice to have taken this short journey with you/all the best for the Wolfman! Rich, NL.
