Haha thanks - we were poking fun at our kiwi accent 😂😂 And yep - quite expensive down here at the bottom of the world - I bet you could do it cheaper in the US at a commercial lab. And even cheaper over bulk processing if you do it yourself.
Nice to see the GW690 system getting some love. 8 shots sounds expensive at first but it has helped me with being so much more intentional with my photography. Great video!
Yeah I absolutely agree! It's definitely got me being more intentional with my shot selection and I've even noticed a trickle down effect to my every day commercial work and how my mindset is changing towards it. Always a good thing - Thanks Justin!
A few alternate conclusions. The Mamiya 67 is not ideal in the field but lenses can be very sharp and contrasty and the kit excellent for meticulously framed images particularly in conjunction with a tripod where dealing with the rotating back, the dark slide, independent shutter cocking, manual film advance, manual metering , and waist level focusing method are potentially less intrusive than when walking around taking quick (relatively) hand held shots. The Fuji is not the least bit beastly. Lighter than a Nikon 810. Shooting with it offers the identical framing as a 35mm SLR and it is a fixed lens so quite straightforward in use, a MF RF point and shoot. 8 (69) vs. 10 frames per roll on a 67 is not that big a deal. 400ASA film in full sun is not only unnecessary but inconvenient when a larger aperture is desirable to control DOF and the max shutter speed is slow- 1/400 for the RZ 67, 1/500 for the GW 690 ll - glacial compared to modern cameras. ASA 50 or 100 would have allowed for increased IQ and more subject separation. At least you were not using 800 Portra, the UA-camr's favorite. Metering off the content is highly problematic when shooting film unless your content is 18% grey. At the price point for film these days pick up a small light meter -I use a simple Sekonic L 308 model- and a grey card and every frame no matter what the content , will be spot on.
I would imagine the Mamiya 7 would have been a more ideal comparison - I must have shot about a thousand weddings on the RZ back in the day - its a very different beast - and whilst I now shoot digi I do have a GW690III - but regret not buying a Mamiya 7 - oh well
Thanks man!! The extension rings for the matte box didn’t arrive in time for shoot day - would’ve solved the harsh purple lens/nd filter flaring near the end of the clip on the beach. Whoopsies 😂😂
I do not have a Fuji GW690II but I do have a Fuji GW670III with a 90mm normal lens that I use for taking full-length portraits, ¾ length portraits, and environmental portraits. I do not have a Fuji GW690II but I do have a Fuji GSW690III with a 65mm wide-angle lens that I use for taking landscapes, environmental portraits, and large group portraits. I do not have a Mamiya RZ67 but I do have a Mamiya RB67 that I use with the following lenses: 50mm wide-angle lens that I use for shooting landscapes, environmental portraits, and large group portraits. 90mm normal lens that I use for full-length portraits, ¾ length portraits, environmental portraits, product shots, and macro. 180mm telephoto lens that I use for head & shoulder portraits, half-length portraits, face shots, product shots, and macro.
Using a meter app. Lightmate I think it was, accurate every time I used it and with heaps of other manual exposure cameras too. The algorithms are solid :)
Hi from Sydney... GW has been my favourite for years now, loved your personalities guys and i am big fan of your kiwi accent (esp. the guy shooting with the 6x9) well done both...liked the colour grading of you video too... I have the Sekonic L358 but I am guessing the light most of the times and also use my phone for metering BTW what app do you use ?...
Haha - thanks man! You can probably hear us across the ditch lol! Phone metering is underrated - I used one from the Apple app store called 'Lux' but I haven't been able to get it working in the last few months, unsupported now maybe? I've since switched to one called 'Lightmate' - free on the app store. Does the trick for me (Luke - GW user). Dean (Mamiya guy) uses 'Pocket Light Meter' - it's $18.99 NZD though. After filming this clip I managed to find and buy a Minolta Auto Meter IV F. They're super good and easy to use - apparently a pretty solid reputation too. Accurate enough! Check out the Leica vs Leica clip. We use it solidly in that one.
@@hypecamera thanks Luke watched the leica video .... very fun video... for some reason studio portraits didn't grab me at all but the exterior ones were amazing esp towards the end of video it gets better and better ..nice video, nice comparison...well done guys ( big apologies but a friendly suggestion for improvement would be that the music ( esp the vocal part) was not very leica-like perhaps a little bit 'shopping-centre'y - lol ) ... anyway i loved the videos ... feel like i have some good friends in NZ now...i think this video also proved that the jupiter 8 is much better than the new chinese lens in many ways ... keep up the good work guys ... cheers
@@mnickdell8104 Hahaha - thanks man. Yeah I'm experimenting with different soundscapes around perceived 'camera vlog' style tracks. I want to add my own flavour to it, music I like and tunes I'm drawn to vs what you'd expect to hear in a Leica or Leica-esque clip. I mean, I'm a massive fan of synthwave and 80's inspired movie soundtracks but even then I think it may push the envelope a little too far lol!
hypecamera Ahhh Fred Dagg. Genius. Russell Coight - a bumbling outdoorsman played by Oz comedian Glen Robbins. PS Get an incident meter and a scrim/reflector and a flash.
Minolta Auto Meter IV. Just an ambient light meter no spot. But it’s great, works a treat! www.photographyreview.com/product/flash-and-lighting/light-meters/konica-minolta/auto-meter-iv-f-light-meter.html
When we filmed this particular video we used a light meter app on Deans phone, not sure which one. The week after we filmed it I bought the Minolta Auto Meter.
metering with a phone, closing down the lenses for portraits. fairly pointless exercise. but the light is good and the girl is pretty, so i guess its fine
@@hypecamera I bet you it's a very mutual feeling :) can't stand it. Sometimes we have people who refuse to go first and we call it a Canadian standoff because it's all you go first no you go first forever

Two expensive cameras and you both use your phones to measure the light, this makes no sense. Get a Spot Meter and set the ASA to half the film speed being used and meter off the models face. perfect exposure every time.
mamiyapress thanks Mamiyapress guy - we literally just got a handheld light meter about a week after filming this. Thank you for your concern. But tbh - don’t knock light meter apps. It’s just math and they work. I’ve film tested a heap of vintage/classic cameras that have no coupled meter and they’re super accurate.
mamiyapress I usually rate my film at half the box speed man but for this shoot I had to rate it box speed because there wasn’t enough light available in the forest. Half box speed would have meant 1/15 or 1/30 on the shutter which is a bit too slow for portrait work. Wanted to keep them sharp so shot 1/125 at box speed 😎
Nothing wrong with a light meter app - it’s just an algorithm. We didn’t have one for this video but managed to find one for sale in our city for the next video. Thanks for your concern 😂😂🤦🏻♂️
yo this video was kinda funny. "appitcha" 😂 - also 5.25 per photo on the GW is nuts!
