THE HILLS HAVE EYES - A stroll around Nelson's Port Hills with a Mamiya 7II and a Leica M4
Luke needs a shave and Dean likes the light.
We take a walk around Nelson's Port Hills pre winter and get the good morning light. COVID - Delta is yet to reach New Zealand and life is good.
After filming this and discussing with fellow Mamiya 7 owners, we wonder whether it's too sharp for vibes?
Thoughts?

We're still buzzing on Dean's new Mamiya 7II purchase so we thought we'd take a trip down memory lane and share our first impressions from when he had it out on loan. I've had this neat little Konica compact a while now so thought it was about time for a review. And so this serves as the start point of the hypecameras clog. Camera log that is.
What films do you recommend?
Nicely done! Looks like a fun day for sure!
Is the meter required or super important? Can you shoot without it? I was looking at a used one but the meter doesnβt work. Itβs a great price but if I would need the meter, I donβt want to buy it. Thanks!
Good video, love the shots!
I dig one out I bought at a thrift store for $1. I need to replace the seals and test her out I guess. Can I test it with a battery before I replace the seals?
Yeah I would have thought so, just use some black electrical tape around the film cover door, should do the trick!
Use gaffers tape!
I would imagine the Mamiya 7 would have been a more ideal comparison - I must have shot about a thousand weddings on the RZ back in the day - its a very different beast - and whilst I now shoot digi I do have a GW690III - but regret not buying a Mamiya 7 - oh well
Yeah very true - we didn't have access to the Mam 7 at the time, we covered it in a later video. Beautiful camera!
Poor Madison looks resigned to what comes next....
Patience of a saint haha
nice very nice.... dear isn't it hard to focus in rangefinder system? I've never done and I am behind this fuji camera...
Is the fuji industrial that you have used an expired? If it expired, what is your asa setting?
Not expired. It was ISO 100 on the box and I shot it at ISO 200 for vibes :)
@@hypecamera thankyou! I find local store that have fuji industrial but sadly its expired 2013. Love the colours!
Thanks guys. GW690II looks like expensive digital, while the RZ67 had some bokeh that was a bit distracting. My search continues...π
loved the video! GW690 love! the f16 animation LOL
wow thank you for the review and samples!! very helpful and also beautiful shots=)
Did you manage to find one yet?
@@hypecameraI did!
I have one that I inherit from my mom, damn, I love this camera!!! Im trying to find a flash for it, have you tried one or know wich one can fit?? thanks!!
Try a Flash Q 20II from Light Pix Labs

LR 44 battery are you sure ??
were you using a meter app, or shooting in raw on the phone and cloning the exposure settings? Thanks for the vid i enjoyed the show.
Using a meter app. Lightmate I think it was, accurate every time I used it and with heaps of other manual exposure cameras too. The algorithms are solid :)
Konica bms 100.. What is the diffrent than u mini af and whats the need of each... Which do u suggest? Advice please
Hey so the BMS 100 is for APS film canisters and the U-mini/EU-mini takes standard 35mm film. I'd go for the U-mini/EU-mini simply because 35mm has abundantly more developing centres. For example, here in New Zealand I don't think ANY camera stores develop APS any more.
I use the RZ67 for street photography fuck with me.!!
I fine choice!
Please donβt let the film advance lever slam back like that. :(

Hey Bayu, thereβs no way to perform a mid roll rewind. I canβt remember as I sold mine to another person - should be auto rewind
Ahhh man. Stumbled onto that C35 vid surfing UA-cam and now just checked out this one. Making me wicked nostalgic. (Bit of Tui song at around 2:05 :D ) Spent a bunch of time in Nelson as well outside Collingwood. Lived in Welly for about a year and always wanted to relocate near Nelson somewhere but went back stateside for family troubles back in 2011 and never made it back down around. Love ur neckothe world. <3
Ah true! Yeah sheβs a real slice of paradise down here eh, bottom of the world haha!
Was there for a year in 2004/05 and never made it back since, makes me so sad, miss it every day still (obviously shot the whole trip on film being 2005!)
Niiiiiiiiiiiiice. C35 work in Aotearoa. Love Nelson, man. Nearly tried to move there - it's still not off the table years later now! <3
Haha do it man!!
Awesome video! What do you scan your negatives with?
Pretty sure these were done with a Frontier at the lab.
@@hypecamera so detailed and sharp, really awesome!
Painful

The entire C35 lines, particularly the earlier ones but even the AF versions before Cosina took over production, are absolutely ace sleepers even still these days. Not an aperture priority camera though; it functions much like their shutter-priority system cameras with a trap-needle mechanism, but it's fully AE with set aperture/shutter speed combination ranges selected for the given meter reading. Total P&S with a rangefinder. And a fuggin Hexanon. π€©
Hi, I'd like to ask if my Konica U Mini camera autodate not functioning and film counter doesn't show. However, the camera is working well (but I had to guess to count the film since the counter doesn't show). If I replace the date battery, will the film counter shown too? Thanks and have a nice day!
I can't remember off the top of my head but I don't think so. Body battery powers the body, door battery powers the date function.
Mamiya muy bien . La ultima foto de Fufi tambien
On 100 iso film do you turn Konica to 200 iso or 200 to 300? Or keep same level? I've been told should push up 100? Thanks cheers!
GREAT question! I guess this is coming from the understanding that the newer zinc air batteries have a 0.5 voltage difference than the older mercury style. I don't really have an answer for that I'm afraid. I generally shoot half box speed for all the film I shoot just coz I like the tonez. For ISO 100 films I'd probably shoot even at ISO 100 and then hope there is enough push/pull in the scan file to do something with in post.
@@hypecamera thanks a lot will try to a/b test it over rolls
u guys should try and get a hold of kodak gold 200 in 120 when it drops.

Wow, these shots are incredible. I just bought this camera, hoping for similar results :D
If you get correct focus youβll be stoked at the results!! Great camera! Wish Iβd kept one now π
@@hypecamera Excited! It's getting a new light seal in the shop as I type. Focus is the only thing you need to worry about right? Since it's automatic?
@@taylorbernier7966 yeah pretty much - although knowing your ISO range for the conditions is handy too.
@@hypecamera Did you find that using an LR44 battery pushed your light meter to over exposure often? Did you compenstate with a lower ISO for this (ISO 200, set ISO to 180) ? Clerk at the camera store said this would happen because of the stronger signal the battery was sending but that it shouldn't affect the photos. I ask because I was just outside trying to take some shots and I was often near overexposure (according to the viewfinder meter) Do you recall your experience with this?
@@taylorbernier7966 not that I recall - the difference between the original mercury battery voltage and the newer LR44 is negligible- only .5v I think from memory. However - I nearly always shoot at half box speed to get a slightly over exposed look anyway.
I wanna come to NZ π
Do it!!! Weβll have ya βround for tea!
metering with a phone, closing down the lenses for portraits. fairly pointless exercise. but the light is good and the girl is pretty, so i guess its fine
Thank you yes. Welcome to the party.
Thanks for the video! What film did you use?
No worries! Films round the city was Fuji Pro 400H, shots of Lily-Ellen were on Portra400. Prob some of the best tones Iβve ever had shooting people tbh π
@@hypecamerais there another film you recommend bc that film is very expensive
wooow, 9:40 worked out really well! SUPER well!!
Yeah I agree!!!
Whatβs the light meter your using??
Minolta Auto Meter IV. Just an ambient light meter no spot. But itβs great, works a treat! www.photographyreview.com/product/flash-and-lighting/light-meters/konica-minolta/auto-meter-iv-f-light-meter.html
When we filmed this particular video we used a light meter app on Deans phone, not sure which one. The week after we filmed it I bought the Minolta Auto Meter.
The film has more sharpness and contrast overall β¦.no digital cam has ever been able to simulate film colours 100%
Totally agree!!
Thank you so much for this! Needed something quick and this review helped me make my choice
Awesome!!!
Watching you load film is as exciting as watching an unboxing!!π
Thanks! A genuine fan! Weβre so grateful!! Which part did you like the best?
Great review, loved the photos! Looking at buy one myself on ebay!
Do it! I havenβt checked eBay prices recently but a good one shouldnβt be more than $50 USD surely?
Confirmed - just had a check and lowest buy now + shipping for a working one is $95 NZD ($65 USD Jan 2022). So prices are indeed heading north.
@@hypecamera If you pick up one that has a non-responsive meter, 9 times out of 10 it's just the negative battery lead (sometimes positive as well) below the battery-box (or above rather I guess) that usually just has broken solder and/or rotten end of the wire. Quick fix.
@@therealchickentender yeah good point! I also had that issue with a Minolta HiMatic 7s. The little tab was depressed too much and just used a screw driver on it to lift it a bit to make contact. Winner winner.
@@hypecamera It's actually kinda sad to think about how many of the consumer cameras of this age were probably binned in the last 20 years for reasons like that.
Hi! I got a question: You said that EV 11 was the equivalent of 1/250 and f/2.8. But if i turn both rings, for example, to 1/60 and f/5.6, the little window also says 11. How do i use the meter and the rings correctly? Thank's in advance!
GREAT question - if youβre pointing the camera at different lit scenes youβll get different combinations of f-stop & shutter speed. But itβs still equal to EV 11 - does that make sense? A shutter speed of 1/250 at f/2.8 is equal to 1/60 at f/5.6. Youβve compensated the faster shutter (250) for more things in focus at f/5.6 BUT you need a slower shutter to get the same EV result. EV is just a reading of light at a point in the scene. So EV 11 is what it is. How you shoot the seen with that EV 11 info is up to you and what you desire the image to look like. Help or nah?
@@hypecamera I am new to the world of photography, and you have made it crystal clear to me. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer me, greetings! π
@@Manu_____. @hypecamera I would add that the EV is also dependent on the film speed.
