  • Hi Everyone!
    In this video I'll be talking about my experience with trying to get my P.Eng designation. There are things I wish I new before I applied, and why it wasn't a good experience for me overall. Hopefully this will help prevent people from making the same mistakes as I did.

    It is really good to know when trying to apply for PE licence the work what we have been doing should directly relate with our specialization at school. At least that makes it easer to get the licence i guess. Surprisingly, I haven't had a clue about that for sure. Thank very much for sharing your experience.

    I'm a volunteer P.Eng. Mentor in western Canada and this also happens in other provinces. People I know for example originally graduated in say EE, and end up working in more of a Mechanical, or Civil Engineering role and because of that mismatch are required to take several courses through EGBC or APEGA to meet the educational requirements to obtain their P.Eng. Firstly good for you for posting this so others can learn as you're not the only one for sure. It doesn't seem fair but yes your co-workers who do the same work as you won't have the same issues because their original education was in Mechanical for Product Engineering even though after 4+ years of working we forget everything we learned in school. It would have been caught earlier if you had registered as an EIT right after University, and then reported your work experience gradually year by year as then PEO should have flagged that earlier in your career. I personally reported my EIT education year by year until I reached the min 4 year mark before applying for my P.Eng. then got it with no interview required because of that setup. There is also the general route such as switching to more of a Project Management or any General role as I've seen many Engineers who originally obtained their education in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, etc. obtain their P.Eng. doing the same PM role too. Rather than a more technical Product Engineering role because then it really does need to be Mechanical. Finally just communicate with PEO, and work with them as again it may be a matter of courses to take as I do know friends who ran into the same mismatch of education to work experience issue and eventually got through it by doing the required courses the associate required them to do. As a final resort I suppose you could do a career change, and work in Chemical Engineering. Maybe pickup a Petro Engineering position possibly in Alberta I mean they make a lot anyways, and eventually get your P.Eng that way.

      If I am registered as an EIT and apply for P.Eng with 4 years+ work experience, is there going to be another evaluation for the education for PEng application processing or they are going to rely on the evaluation that was done for my EIT application?

    • @micrasystems
      @micrasystems Рік тому +2

      @@abdullahalmahmud8018 I can't speak for your provincial engineering association, however in general no they shouldn't. They should have already reviewed your education when you first registered as an EIT so that be fine. It's your work experience while you're an EIT that matters after that and how you report it.

      Hi thank you for information, I have same confusion. I have studied mechanical engineer all process done. I have been working in portable loading ramp manufacturing company as an EIT, my role is like APPLICATION ENGINEER where I manage product design and engineering mainly involves steel structures, moving parts like legs and motors sometime. my title is mechnical/structural EIT. is my experience irrelevant to what I studied?

    • @micrasystems
      @micrasystems 11 місяців тому

      @@allent5896 since you're already registered as an EIT with your provincial engineering association, it's best to go through the P.Eng. process with them including your inquiries. For example if your direct supervisor is a P.Eng Mechanical Engineer too and you demonstrate you meet the engineering modules for work experience towards your engineering license then you should be fine.

    Hello Ma'am,
    Thank you for sharing your experience with us on open platform. I salute you for that, not everyone is upfront and open to talk about it. Your video helped me, as I was walking into the same a booby trap as you did. Basically, I'm Mechanical Engineer by education but I've worn multiple hats in my 13 years of experience from Mechanical Engineering experience to currently working in Pharma industry as process engineer. It would be hard for me to explain P.Eng my experience in Canada which is Bioprocess engineer which is nowhere near to my education degree. For my career choice I don't see value addition to hold a P.Eng title even though it is mandatory requirement to gain 1 step further in my career , as I'm never going to achieve with such complicated and conservative approach from P.Eng.
    Thanks once again sharing your experience. It will be guiding tool if I intend to opt the option for P.Eng

    Yeah I went in for PEO license interview... twice within 2 months. The first time... I didn't remember the details, not technical at all. One guy was happy and the other wasn't. Then 2 months later, another round of interview... this time it was a lot more technical - difference between adsorption and absorption (remember that from 2nd year process engineering), how to size a stripper (showed them briefly how I would approach it and the equations), show them the raolut's law and the difference with henry's law...

Actually, it even violates one of their ethics principles - the one about a professional engineer treating others with courtesy and good faith. Being condescending and making you feel awful does not sound like courtesy; these people should be setting a better example of professional engineering conduct. I started in engineering but later switched to geoscience. The main takeaway I got from Professional Engineering Societies in first year introduction courses is they are kind of vindictive gatekeepers and that really turned me off to the profession. There is a lot of fluidity in the real workforce in what people do and what you learn in school isn't always what ends up being what you can get for work. As a geoscientist end up under the same society unfortunately and there is even less value to membership. For us it is mostly a scam as they offer no educational opportunities or discipline specific support. So it's basically for a title that most people don't really care about anyway and a discount on car insurance I can get anyway working in my industry. The only real reason to have it is to start a business or sign off on documents. By the way, I work with engineers all the time in my field and having the title maybe is actually worse in terms of competence levels. The system is not at all there to support people but to upsell services and try to pretend it's black and white when it is gray unless you are working at premium corporate positions in very traditional fields.

    Hi Melon I also went through exact same situation like you did. I am from Manufacturing trade but was working as operations manager in a distribution company where i designed and developed lots of product handling machines and technical work related to warehousing etc. I was also denied the license and was told to show one year of Manufacturing experience. So its seems like you need to be in the same field of work what you studied. Yes the interviewers were very very rude and abusive. I did complaint to higher authorities, but did not work. I also had to appear for technical exams prior to the ER submission. I am working on my license since 2011. I gave interview twice. Ist was academic and second was after ER submission. Now i am resubmitting my ER with one year of Manufacturing since i left the previous organization and joined Manufacturing industry. Lets see what happens next.

    Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I believe I might be in somewhat similar situation. I had a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and then a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from the U.S. I got my EIT long time ago (maybe 2017). I have international experience and my recent experience in Canada is Project Management in an Industrial/Mechanical company. Although I did similar tasks and processes but not in the same industry as my education (Civil). I am somewhat hesitant to apply for P.Eng. I don't want it for an engineering work, but I mostly want it for future Project Management and managerial work of Engineering which ask for P.Eng although I have my PMP.

      Hi! I didn’t end up getting the P.Eng because I ended up switching careers. The requirement is that you need to be working under a P.Eng manager for at least 12 months. If you don’t have one, ask someone who is a P.Eng that has supervised your work on a project or you worked with and tell him/her to sign off on your application (that’s what most people do).

What can you tell us about your experience in trying to get a job in chemical engineering after you graduated? It raises the important question of what a P. Eng applicant is supposed to do if he/she finds himself/herself in this type of dilemma - and for that matter, how to prevent such a dilemma from happening in the first place.

    • @MelonSlicers

      I actually worked as a manufacturing and product engineer. Most of my colleagues did mechanical or materials engineering. It was very difficult trying to land a chemical engineering job, and I was never able to. I’m not exactly sure why, but I’ve been told they usually only hire from students with relevant co-op experience which I missed out on. I don’t think there’s anything an applicant for peng can do in this situation, I just accepted that I will never get my peng designation while my coworkers doing the same job as me can.

      @@MelonSlicers The difficulties that you describe concerning getting work term co-ops seem to represent a key problem area in your case. An incredibly stupid dilemma for you to have to deal with - and in my view, it is imperative that ways be found to prevent any occurrences of this sort of thing from getting others into trouble, as well as finding the solution to your own particular problem. I was told about your own problem in the first place by someone in Ottawa connected with PEO and also OSPE. OSPE - the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers - is a body which advocates for the professional interests of engineers in Ontario (and not just P. Eng's in Ontario) - and as such, its function is quite separate from PEO which, as you know, is the licensing body. Personally I can't promise anything right now. But if your problem is to be solved, then it is necessary to find a way round the problem of grossly bloated and inefficient job markets preventing P. Eng. applicants from making progress. Grossly bloated and inefficient job markets are causing trouble for a lot of people - whether they are licensed P. Eng.'s or not. In this discussion, we have exposed a serious problem area which P.E.O. do not seem to have considered at all in your case. All I can say right now is that I'll inform a few people about it, and we'll take it from there.

Should we be applying for the P.eng when we are 50 years old? What if you design compressor stations everyday for your entire life? or just run stress calculations? I have a B.Eng in Automotive Engg (from oversees. Its basically Mech engg with some automotive courses in the final year) and a M.Eng in Mechanical Engg (done in Canada). I want to apply for my Mech Engg P.Eng. I currently work in Technical Sales for an expansion joint manufacturer. I have past experience in teaching Automotive & Mecahnical engg courses at a Polytechnic (oversees) and in Engg. Procurement. I am really confused as to how APEGA will view my credentials and work experience as a lot of it does not align. Would they look at my masters and give it preference or my bachelors degree? Only individuals who are a P.Eng. licence holder with another Canadian regulator can submit a P.Eng. thank you for sharing first. Engineers ae upset about how their job is not taken seriously. Firms are intentionality hiring engineers in jobs not related to their majors to take advantage of them. Professional regulation bodies are totaly against these unethical behavior. It is clearly stated when you prepare to the practice exam that you are not allowed to wok outside the scope of your training (degree). If you are for instance a mechanical engineer and you worked as a structural engineer that might pass; but working as a geotechnical engineer wont be okey. Engineers know already their fields and the authorized overlaps. Outside that, the code of ethics is clear wherever you go. In you re case, you might enroll into a master of electrical/mechanical/product engineering to upgrade your skills and justify the change of practice scope

    PEO is a bit of a dated organization, but it's primarily aimed at consulting engineering firms, and it's about highly technical practical experience, as the outcome is meant to be a stamp so that the buck stops with you, especially for mechanical, electrical, structural and civil engineering. Every job is different, and the kind of experience they respect is hypertechnical. Wanting a P.Eng is saying that you want to design things (to make tons of money) and be held accountable to your design. Sorry to hear about your bad experience, must have been scary.

    The issue crucial with PEO is the need to match work experience with educational background. Therefore, it is important to make sure the jobs you take on not only qualifies as engineering experience but also be in the field that you had studied. Since you could not find this requirement clearly stated on the PEO website, I consider the organization to be deliberately evasive. The motivation for this unethical behaviour is greed, IMO. If you were a fee paying EIT, PEO should have advised you of the matching requirement. Better still, undergraduates of engineering programs should be informed of this early in their education. What a waste of time and money to learn of this at the last step of the whole process. 🤬

      Hi, thanks for the wishes and hearing my story! If you have an undergraduate degree back home and a masters that is NOT in Canada, you may need to write a technical exam. This exam is pretty much a summary of all the engineering principles you've learned in university. However, you can try to see if you can get this waived by talking to the P.Eng office. This will vary depending on each individual. They will verify if your education elsewhere is similar to Canadian education. You can pursue P.Eng in both mechanical or biomedical as you have an educational background in both the fields.
