Hi! Congrats on finding a cool camera! The xD-Picture card can be found online on auction sites and online markets like eBay and Amazon. You can also try searching for "micro SD to xD adapters", and I think you can find those for a lot cheaper, and you would of course need a micro SD card to use with that adapter. As for the batteries, you can probably pick those up at any dollar store or pharmacy, or you could use rechargeable batteries. There is no specific special battery, you just need 4 AAs.

any settings you recommend for taking photos? The camera I found off the thrift store doesnt have the mod wheel, and I would just like to know some manual settings. Cheers :)

Can you use any generic modern memory card to use the camera

Unfortunately, the S700 uses an xD-Picture Card which isn't especially easy to come by. You can't use any standard SD card. I have found adapters for mini SD cards on Amazon, though...

the s700 can use either the xD type memory card or the SD type card (up to max 2GB). both types of card fit into the same slot in this particular model of camera.

is it better than the GE x500?

Wish I could tell you an opinion on that, but I haven't had the chance to try a GE x500. If I find one in the wild, I'll see if I can grab it!
