  • Note choice is important, absolutely, but many guitarists look towards new scales or shapes when feeling uninspired or bored with their playing. If you have the right scale for a particular situation, simply playing those same notes somewhere else on the neck probably won’t fix what you are not happy with. Interesting phrasing is as much (or arguably more) about rhythm, space, dynamics...
that’s a side of the melodic puzzle that can be trickier to “practice”. So here’s a simple idea that might help jump start some new ideas. No theory or thinking involved... stick with me, the playing gets slightly less mundane at about 5:30, but it’s the concept that’s the payoff.

Cool. That is something I did once in a great while because I was lame at lead playing and thought it was too easy and being stupid but combining this with that lesson you just posted about using half steps to find out where you are on the scale and your root note then going vertical from the root note to the major scale really helped make sense of the fretboard! It also figures in to how most hit songs are created because I always hear stories of how a guitarist just makes up a little section or riff and then the singer/songwriter hears it and figures out what to do with it from

Such a great lesson. I think I saw someone teach this years ago, but I haven’t thought of it in a long while. Filing this away for when my kids start working on improvisation.

Great stuff here. Musical food-for-thought. Lately, I've been tryin things: similar-to-this - to make my playing sound-more Jazzy. ( and you mentioned John Bonham - too ) Love Zep.

Is the guitar you’re playing a McCarty with a P90?
