      Today is the day you say bye to a beautiful guitar, won't be the first time. Also my les paul keeps producing static when I plug it in which hurts quite a bit, has this ever happened to you?

    It all about your "vibe" to become a successful studio session player over anything else, period. There's NO question you have to have chops as a player, not necessarily able to read sheet music (it's a plus though) but knowing how to read charts, fretboard & chords inside out, sound tone, etc... And at least some experience & skillset in music production & how to get around in the studio. However, my experience having 2 of my best friends who are well sought after session & touring guitarist for the past 30+ years in the music business industry. I'm talking about the pro's pro in the business, working with the top music artists in the music industry. The main reason to their success is they're both just really great likeable guys. They have an aura in them that naturally sends a positive energy vibe to everyone around them which sets them apart from others when an artist comes into the studio. It transcends in their playing of knowing how & what is needed by the way they approach a song in the studio. "VIBE"

    Thank you for that tip laden interview with Bryan Ewald on becoming a session player. Im a writer in the music business and would like to do an interview with you. I am currently doing an email only interview with Tim Rockmore who's a well known session player from New York City, and I've done several other interviews with him as well. great tips so many musicians need to learn. thanks again man.

      That's the downside to the music world today.. it's always been like that but even more so today. I play guitar and drums. And was born in a very musically talented family. Where everyone including women and kids play one or more instruments. It's just the way it is. But I personally know three guitarists that I've sat in same room with and I literally couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. They were that good. One of them worked at auto section of Walmart. The other in a restaurant. I'm 54 yo. And I learned if you don't know someone that can open the door. Or at the least. Know someone that knows someone that can open the door. The sad part is is their are great great musicians out there. But if you don't know the right person you'll retire from Walmart. Or own a bed and breakfast.

    What about sheet music? I was always under the impression that studio musicians have to be absolute masters of sheet music that go into a studio, get sheet music thrown at them and they just sight read it and five minutes later play everything flawlessly. Am I wrong?

    • @VForbes
      @VForbes 6 років тому +2

      Gad Debeli my thoughts exactly.

    • @gbermudezmora
      @gbermudezmora 6 років тому +5

      While sight reading is an awesome skill to have, unless you're playing in an orchestra or a classical piece, I doubt you'll be given the sheet music to a song. You may get the chart, with the chords and rhythm wrote (real book style) and you have to play over it. Maybe there's a motif that's written that you may have to read. But probably not the whole song in sheet music. So, reading music is a must and you may have to be comfortable with song charts. But sight reading maybe not be that neccesary.

    • @gbermudezmora
      @gbermudezmora 6 років тому +4

      The producer usually tells the musician what he/she wants and the musician does his/her part. That way, there's the vibe of the musician printed in the record. Of course, if you have really good taste and can read music charts fluently, you'll get the whole record done in a few takes.

    • @BryanEwald
      @BryanEwald 6 років тому +9

      Good question and yes that is a skill that will no doubt give you a massive edge. My sight reading skills are pretty weak, and I’ve turned down two jobs in my life knowing that would be a hinderance. Chord chart reading and writing is definitely a major help and that is a skill I would say is a must. I’d say any skill you acquire will help, however in my personal experience, I’ve never been asked about those things or if I have a degree. Work comes from people liking what you bring to the table part, vibe and tone wise above all else.

    Doing studio made mid-song tuning/ guitar tone switching on the fly is done by using high end modeling, like a USA made Variax with a Helix when dealing with something like that in a live setting...is it exactly like using the real deal? No, nothing is like the real deal except the real deal, but I have found in a live setting, if you have spent adequate time dialing in your tone, it can be very satisfactory and you get complemented for pulling it off, especially if you are the only guitarist on the stage with the band, and you are landing all the important parts of a cover tune by yourself. Editing this in as to be fair: in one cover band I'm in I use a Roland midi'd up Parker Fly with a Roland GP 10 doing classic and current danceable rock and pop covers, and in the country cover band they prefer the sound of the Line 6 gear I have. Depending on the song, the Roland stuff sounds better, and vise versa IMO. If I was rich, I'd have a bunch of pre tuned guitars and a back line of amps lined up with a guitar caddy running back and forth taking guitars on and off me , and bringing up guitars on those reach around stands to do cameo parts like a golf caddy on a golf coarse, hahahaha! but really, unless you are like Alex Lifeson or someone like that, you know what I mean...but then I think after a while, that would get old and tiresome...

But it's always about how we grasp about the music or to be specific the art of mastering the instrument in this case the guitar itself. Some child prodigies shred with ease but do it without flair, cause they've done it through progressive or even excessive practice. Sure practice makes perfect but wisdom comes with times.
