My cylinder mower is a rover 45 which is the same as a scott bonnar 45 and a protea cylinder mower. Other great reel mowers for example are the toro greensmasters, mowmasters, masports and swardman reel mowers.

I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

I have more or less the exact same mower.
I would love to see an in depth video on everything you do before starting to cut.
Height adjustments of the front roller, which nuts and bolts to loosen and tighten, how to make sure the engine isn't stalling... An in depth catch all video.

Found it really helpful as I just bought a Scotty 45 that’s been sitting in a shed for 5 years .
Have you done a video on chain adjustments as when I started mine it seem to bog down on the roller and stop spinning .
I’m guessing it’s because the chain is too slack ?

I'd love a reel vs standard mower. So pro and cons. And which works best in different situations. Like perfectly flat reckless grass seems like the only time youd use a reel mower , coming from California

Is the rear roller control mower cutting lower on 1 side my masport is 3 months old and cutts deeper on the left hand side its doing my head in.. my old rover 45 never had a problem any advice would be great

Yep, this would be a worth while vid. Also things like adjusting the cutter speed and mower speed. My mower pulls me along so fast its very hard to control and I have no idea how to change it lol.

Hey mate, great vid. I've just bought an old scott bonnar and still learning how to adjust it. If i go too tight it will cut paper, but won't spin freely. If i loosen it off so the blades will 'kiss' the bed knife it won't cut the paper. Are the blades too blunt?
Hey mate! It need a grind by the sounds of it. You’ll need to send the reel and soleplate away to get ground
Having the same issue here and blades just got sharpened, could it be anything else as my blade doesn’t spin as freely as yours when its not running.
I have the exact same mower, I saved up to get that particular mower before I even laid the lawn. Do you sharpen your bed knife?

Do you mean back lap it? Or send it away to get ground?
I generally don’t backlap unless my bedknife has a Knick or an imperfection in it. I just adjust the reel to the bedknife and if it cuts that’s all it needs!

Yeah we also cant get it in NZ but found basically the same product called Bioboost 6-2-0 + Trace Elements maybe there is also a product in Aussie.. Any way keep up the great lawn videos :)

What's the maximum height of grass where it makes sense to use a reel mower?
Could have done with a bit more detail with adjusting the rear roller so its true, but all in all great informative vid covering the basics 👍

Yes
That reel is a left-hand spiral with the lead-in on the left side of the machine. That’s quite unusual as most machines have the lead-in on the right.
what do you think about the bed knife buddy
I’ve never used one, but they look like they would be great to help keep the bedknife sharp and file out any imperfections 👌🏽

Can cylinder mowers be used on uneven lawns?
If it has a roller in front instead of wheels, you will have a lot less issues. Wheels go up and down with every change in your lawns surface. A roller has a wider contact area, so it doesn’t go up and down as much. It’s best to even out your lawn before using a reel lawn mower
Iv got buffalo that i like cutting at 70mm. Can you get reel mowers to cut that high? And where is the best place to get them 2nd hand?
Hey mate, you can get a scott bonnar at George and sbfabandparts sells a bracket for the front roller so you can cut higher!
Usually you will have to scout gumtree and marketplace on Facebook.
Even go check at your local golf course and see if they have any old ones stored in the shed.
Why does my mower not cut in the centre of the blade. If I adjust each end the blade gets really tight

@@LawnTips true. I just brought a 45 and was thinking it was 2 stroke. I only have the 2 little yellow awkward oil filler plugs which i thought was to do with the reel engagment. Am i wrong?
Gareth Pullin those are to fill up with oil for the engine. No oil needed for the reel

Where did you get it?
My reel engages as soon as my starts, the cable adjustment has not effect, it will adjust the revs but the blade stays engaged. Any suggestions?

There is neither a right nor a left in a circle. Arrange the handle of your ratcheting socket wrench so that it is upright and _above_ the nut or bolt you intend to act on; through the ratchet or freewheel, swing the handle through 180° so that it is again upright but _below_ the nut or bolt; for each of these two positions, by turns, and relative to your intended action on that nut or bolt, assess the 'meaning' of that sing-song mnemonic mentioned in the video and ask yourself whether or not that mnemonic -- if it's _at all_ useful, _at all_ comprehensive, _at all_ applicable -- isn't based on a different or deeper understanding of machine threads than can possibly be conveyed to a tyro by having them hear, and repeat, without understanding, a mind-effing, four-word bit of bafflegab.
For conventional threaded objects, as seen from 'the business end', clockwise turns of that object tightens (or advances) that object relative to the matching (or mating) threaded counterpart. IOW, conventionally, clockwise tightens (or advances).
The mnemonic is, functionally, an unintentional *head-phuc.*
