    To make this performance sound even more incredible, he was just getting off a cold and this song was a little more than halfway through the show. The dude is a madman and so talented in so many ways

    I would say that this is definitely Devin's most musically repetitive song. I think the reason is the subject. Devin has an album called Ziltoid, a rock opera about an supreme alien leader demanding the universe's ultimate cup of coffee. If not, he makes war. It's beautiful.

      Sad thing is....I've heard of wars being started over less.

      The beautiful thing about the first Ziltoid, he made it when he was in a period where he decided he wasn't into making music, as part of the industry, and he built a studio in his basement and made this for like $500 as a well to tell the labels to eat shit - the coffee is an analogy. He's also kept ownership of all his music through Hevy Devy Records which is then released through lease by Sony labels, like InsideOut - smart business moves

    His performance of Death if Music from the same show is probably my favorite live vocal performance ever.

    DH, fun review as always. Devi is all about a wall of sound experience. As others have said, the Devin Townsend rabbit hole is quite an extensive one that goes back to his work with Steve Vai on Vai's 'Sex & Religion' LP back in '93. After Vai, there is Strapping Young Lad and then the Devin Townsend Band and The Devin Townsend Project (DTP). I first discovered Townend via Strapping Young Lad (SYL), and SYL is definitely different from some of his other stuff... Devin was working through quite a bit of angst back then but still incorporates that wall of sound. SYL's "All Hail the New Flesh" is a banger and you will also get some recommendations for "Love?" As someone posted below 'Ziltoid the Omniscient' is sort of like a rock opera, but I would call it more a concept album. It coupled along with the follow-up double LP Z2 titled 'Sky Blue' and 'Dark Matters" are worth checking out. "March of the Poozers" is a popular tune among fans from Z2 and there is a live version from Royal Albert Hall, from the same 2015 show you just watched if I'm not mistaken, on UA-cam. Besides his Royal Albert Hall live performance, Ocean Machine - Live at the Ancient Roman Theatre Plovdiv is even more spectacular IMO. Devi is a heck of a live performer.

    +1 for anyone who recommends Strapping Young Lad, normal entry level is the song Love? but they have some insane stuff. Devin basically does everything you want, just a case of finding it in his 27 album output (ocean machine is a classic start to finish, Death of Music being the absolute pinnacle). More Devin = More views :)

    I got the feeling that the "muddiness" was from too much room sound mixed in. For sure, Devin's vocal ability is no joke! 🤘🏽🤩

  • @AntonNidhoggr
    @AntonNidhoggr 3 роки тому +7

    What I like about Devin (besides his vocals obviously) is the sound, how he mixes his stuff. It sounds not like just metal but more like 'ambient metal'.
    Ps. I know a good Devin's song for a gym: SYL - Detox (for intense training, lol)

      Anyway96 is correct, It should be coming out on the 14th of this month....as long as UA-cam doesn't block it on release like they have done before.

    Hmm, if you're looking for Devin songs for the gym look more into his Strapping Young Lad work. It's high octane, more aggressive and faster. If you want to keep the switches... Maybe Love?, Wrong side or Almost Again

      For the angriest Devin of all, check Shitstorm - I've seen it being described by someone as "angry music for joggers" ;) The sad part is, Devin really wasn't in a good place writing that music and that oozes out of that song from all sides. Detox might be better choice for a reaction.

      @@THEDavidHeretic Try Detox, Aftermath, Love, Almost again from them, you'll definitely love it (very VERY heavy metal)

      @@THEDavidHeretic as my colleague above suggests, it is very metal and more aggressive. He got his big break doing vocals for Steve Vai.

    I was introduced to Devin Townshend when he sang lead vocal in Vai 'Sex and Religion' album, the only album of Steve Vai where there is a singer. Devin vocal style is quite rich and his technique is impressive.

    If you want another excellent song but with a bit more going on, listen/react to Higher live at Plovdiv, *chef kiss*. The mudiness might be Devin's signature wall of sound and his obsession with echo. It could be the mix is not the greatest, but I'd bet that was mixed like this on purpose.

    Usually when you get an extreme vocalist they're quick to point out they're doing it healthy, the right way, as to not ruin their voice. Not Devin. He did an interview over at Charismatic Voice where he said he screams till he tastes blood in his throat. He also said he doesn't like singing. Shrugs he's kinda unique
