  • While browsing social media, I noticed a lot of people being disappointed that Honkai Star Rail is turn-based. Here’s a quick video essay of my thoughts on this.

People who "hate" turn based should play more turn based. Every game has a unique battle system. There's gotta be some series or game that each hater would like.
I dont "hate" any type of game or combat system. All can be exciting and nerve-racking.

Turn based games are not created equal. I used to think I hated turn based games, but in reality I only hated the ones with stupidly high encounter rates, and tanky enemies. So yeah, this game looks like one of the good ones.

High encounter rates do sound annoying. Good points!

I’m so excited for Star Rail to come out. I also like it’s turn based system and character design, it will definitely be added to my gacha game roster

Turn-based is never a bad thing, Its all execution. Its just not everyone's cup of tea. I personally like more real time action combat however the biggest pull for me is that its part of the Honkai universe. Honkai Impact's main story has ended. APHO is not releasing soon. The game has the OG Welt as well. It feels like it will add to the overall universe unlike Genshin which is more isolated. I was originally hoping it would tie into Honkai as well but does not seem to be the case anytime soon. Plus I dont want to miss the boat if HSR's main story becomes connected to the speculated "Honkai Galaxia" if is still in the pipeline.

I see you finally remembered your UA-cam password. Jokes aside. I’m glad it’s turn based because when it eventually comes to PS4/5, I’m glad I will have verity instead of another action game like Genshin.

That's a good point. I also would like another good turn-based game while I play other genres

Generally speaking, I'm not a big fan of turn-based combat, since I enjoy the timing and reaction aspect of combat gameplay more than the strategy. HOWEVER, the characters, lore, plot, and worldbuilding of Honkai Star Rail are already so captivating that I'll definitely be playing it regardless. Like you said, there's a lot of variety when it comes to turn-based combat in games both in how the strategy aspect is utilized and how the devs go about avoiding the "waiting for your turn" feeling. It'll be interested to see how HSR goes about it.

I feel like the Hoyoverse is just expanding it's fanbase. I didn't really like Genshin Impact and quit within a week, however I'm a JRPG whore and love turn based crap. Perfect example is when Yakuza did Like a Dragon. The franchise loyalists who loved the action bit were deterred with the turn based direction but you got some of them mixed in with newcomers to the franchise because we love turn based combat. I feel like even though Square Enix may never give us a new AAA turn based game, we are getting love from other places.
You mentioned Persona 5 and boy are they riding that wave with spin offs 😅
Idk if I'm willing to fall down the rabbit hole of losing hundreds for gacha pulls again but I love that this game got a console port and will support in between the backlog of games I already have to beat throughout this year.
    Ugh.
If only time were my friend.

considering one of the most played games in world, is considered a sport I would say no. And yes, I'm talking about chess, and people who doesn't like turn based games exist but that isn't inherently a bad thing, maybe they just didn't find the turn based game for them.
