This song is talking about the normalization of sexual assault in the Japanese school system very often teachers will sexually assault students and blame it on their “bad behavior” the dancing girls are meant to be the bad behavior/distraction as the problem is in the back behind the dancing girls
This song is about a relationship between a teacher and a student, which is where the weird off kilter energy comes from. So great!
They are their own choreographers.
Still my favorite AG song and such a beautiful choreography on a deep and disturbing topic. Plus the music is top notch.
I love this song as well. I find it intriguing, with eastern European, perhaps Russian structural elements, and great melody.
Ah, the "assault" section of the dance choreography is pretty wild. When they perform this live, everyone in the audience goes crazy at that section.

Like most of their songs, they have a few videos for this one, but I always felt like this particular music video has the most impact. Unlike a lot of their official music videos, the dancing isn't completely obscured, and additionally is actually integrated into the storytelling. So it doesn't feel like two separate performances where you have to go check out another video to get a better sense of one or the other. I'm glad this is the version you reacted to.
At last my fav one from them ! Thanks! Basically the song adress the Teacher/Student issue wich are a bit too much common in Japan. The video show how the society is more focusing on little brats ( the girls dancing on the front) instead of focusing on the drama happening in the back ( the teacher abusing the student)...

I don't think you've ever reviewed AG live and in front of a crowd. You need to react to them in concert so you can see them interact with an audience. Mayoeba Toutoshi (Respect if in doubt) is often their closing song and is a call out to the audience to be strong even when unsure about things. Watch out for the "hedobang".

The meaning of Koi Geba (Love Rebel) is tricky. Some of the lyrics and the images of the video describe an unequal power dynamic in a secret and inappropriate relationship between a student and a teacher and the student's feelings and confusion. AG once again tackle a difficult subject.

I don't know what it is about this song but the music gives me "They Might be Giants" vibes. Not the first time, for some reason i am starting to link these two group in my mind. Not a bad thing either. AG and TMBG are phenomenal bands/groups.

I have not looked into the lyrics myself, but the video is bringing to light the issue of inappropriate relationships between teachers and students, which of course is an issue everywhere, not just in Japan.
Inappropriate teacher/student relationships occur everywhere, but they are especially prevalent in Japan. I lived in Japan 1989-2002 and illicit love between a High School teacher and student was a common theme in Japanese movies, tv series, and manga. The High School teacher was never portrayed as a predator but as a victim in some kind of greek tragedy. The lyrics, if taken literally, are consistent with this romanticization of High School teacher/student sxual affairs, and is sung in an old fashioned Kayōkyoku pop style that was popular in the 60s-70s.
But the video, choreography, and especially the song title says to me that the lyrics are not meant to be taken literally. "Gebu" in the title comes from the German word "gewalt" meaning violence, but refers specifically to the extreme political violence inflicted by Japanese New Left radicals who advocate for violent revolution (I've never encountered the word used in any other context). The choreography seems to reinforce this interpretation as at one point Suzuka aggressively grabs Rin by the hair and repeatedly punches her in the belly.
From other Atarashii Gakko mvs and interviews where they break character and speak seriously about their art, I don't think I'm reading too much into this performance. These are extremely intelligent, articulate young women who are using their art to make important social commentary that I never saw in Japan 20 years ago.
Looks like they seek to be unique. They are idols, but "alt" idols. They are their own choreographer. They work with some of the best music producers, none of them are idol producers. They've worked with H Zett M, this guy is so far from a pop producer although their song with them are the best ever IMHO.
I love their art.
They were trying to communicate how difficult it is to be the victim of sexual abuse by a teacher. It's pretty weird that you didn't get that, since it was so obvious.

The song is about a forbidden love between a male teacher and a girl student sung from the girl's point of view. For examples, it is shown as 'The love is like spring storms', 'Is it a crime if I confess?', and something... The lyrics are a little light literary.
According to an interview with Suzuka, this Suzuka from 7:09, is a fairy who watches over the two, haha. But while she wishes them happiness, but she also expresses her conflict over their unforgivable love at 7:20, 7:29... The tone of the music is never bright.
The line of thought that works better for me is seeing them as the mixed feelings the girl feels in this situation. The feelings are among them, over them, behind them, everywhere, never quiet, never stopping, even fighting.
@@juliobastosjb Excuse me for my late reply. What amazes me about the reactions to this song from the reactors outside Japan, is that many viewers comment on how unthinkable it is for a teacher and a student to fall in love, or that it is a sexual crime.
I really think that these are exactly the cultural differences between Japan and other countries. Japan is also sensitive to sexual crimes, but on the other hand, there might be some kind of a tendency to be tolerant of romantic relationships between men and women eve though that is a teacher and a student historically. I have no experiences of living outside Japan, but I guess that foreign countries are more strict about sex crimes than Japan. However, it is probably a reflection of the intensity of sex crimes in other countries.
However I think that without the sensitivity to be flexible about these things, it would be difficult to understand music and various other arts, or to create them yourself.
Even this song by no means approving such a love, and although the love never implies a bright future, I think it expresses something like that we sometimes deviate from the norms of society, or sometimes dare to choose a thorny path. That is art, I guess...
