    This is really helpful. For my favourite I'm tossing up between Adam Nolly Getgood and Andrew Scheps. Something I find very interesting is the huge range in dynamics ranging from lots in the Andrew Scheps mix to almost none in the Buster Odelholm mix. I would love to hear the mix of this that Andy Sneap would do, this is right up his alley.

    Very helpful, thank you! I liked the fourth one down - something about the higher frequencies tickles my ears in a way I like. And what you said about just trusting what I like, once it’s crossed the pro threshold, was invaluable. I’m so grateful for your videos and courses (I have your bundle and am now going through it to mix my second album), thanks again for it all!

    Excellent video !! Thanks Collin !! My Fav was Track #5.. It sounded less dark than Mixes 2-4 (where Mix 1 was the "baseline"). Mix #5 to me has more Midrange which sounded a bit brighter.

    Thank you for a very informative overview. I would have preferred to hear each comparison, over a loop section to be able to compare the differences between them rather than it switching while running through the arrangement. Which was good but took away a more detailed focus. 👍 I am enjoying your channel.😊

    As soon as I hear Andrew Scheps' mix...seems he's mastered using stereo width and exceeds others in maintaining tonal balance.. and just looking at his Waveform, in comparison to other mixes, he's retained the natural Dynamics..didn't clip them off..I very much enjoy that he left room for the client to come in and tweak ..he didn't push this thing over the cliff like some other mixes that were Eq'd to the nth degree...making his mix more likable over the long run...I recently had a personal experience with a mix engineer who just went to far...over worked the mix into something that is, to borrow Collin's phrase, non-organic to the original genre'..nobody liked it, but the mixer..that's not good at all...
    Got to mention that thanks to Colin we're all moving up the ladder toward making better decisions at he desk..and thanks to Colin I can hear things that I never heard before and understand what the hell it all means...i gave up on trying to get somebody else to make my music all it could be and feel grateful that Colin came along...thank you

    The first part of the sound on sound article (the rest is behind a paywall) has actual analysis of the differences, based on interviews - clearly showing these pros are on a totally different level. Listening I can just say, oh that sounds a bit too compressed or too muddy, but they're into serious complexity.

    I think 4 and 8 sounded the best. My mixing has improved drastically in the last year and hopefully when I re-upload my first two albums soon they will get some attention. My songs on my channel currently sound like a mess with no limiters/clippers/proper EQ technique/proper panning used. My new mixes sound quite professional.

    Great video! Great takeaways. And to be honest, the fact that this is nothing like what I'll be mixing is a plus because I'm going by the sound of it and not really comparing. I'm leaning towards #4. #8 and #9 seemed to harsh for me and #5 seemed a bit muddy for my taste with this type of music.

    Thanks Colin for such an informative video. Actually my ears are not so sensitive as to catch the differences of the above mixes. However, I need this clarification. I noticed that all the mixes have 10.4 lufs. Are these tracks the MIXES or MASTERS? My only use for the songs I produce is to make UA-cam videos where any audio that crosses 14 lufs will get normalised and lowered in volume. I am facing this problem with a current project of mine: The master has a lufs of 15, but sounds thin, and will be accepted by YT without any problem. Because the song has a db variation all over, I feel that using volume automation to achieve a lufs of 14 will not improve the sound dramatically. FYI, I have not faced such a problem with any of my earlier songs that were decently loud and not thin even while at 15 lufs. I guess I need to experiment with this particular song, make two masters, one being the current one at 15 lufs, and another at 10 lufs, and upload both the videos to YT and learn how the YT processes the two, and go public with the version that sound full?

    If I were to put it on a record I'd use the Dave Otero mix because it has such a 'full' sound, but if I wanted to listen to it at home just for myself I'd pick the Andrew Scheps mix because it's just the most pleasant to my ears. Not sure if that makes sense...

    Then again, having worked with a band recently, what you like may not be what the customer likes. The customer is always right. Working with the customer, especially if they are all highly trained and expert musos is a good idea as was in this case.

      @TheBandGuide  День тому

      It's a great point! To some extent it's good to be skilled in multiple styles, but I also think having your own "sound" that people who hire you resonate with can be a great factor to stand out from the crowd!

      @FransJCMartins День тому

      @@TheBandGuide yeah, the thing is, my stamp is still on all the mixes, yet, the customer is also happy because I tended to their needs/ ears as well. As in anything where people are involved, human relations and customer satisfaction and two way communication is key.

    Just looking at the stems you can see that all the mixes are smashed except Schepps. He has let more transients through which gives his mix more life. It'm more how I like to mix. Notably, Schepps hails from an older generation such as Alan Parsons who also hated over-compression. That said, mixes 1,9 were worst, mushy, no definition. 3,4,5,6 almost identical. 2 and 7 best. 2 wins.

    You can just look at Scheps wav file and tell he didn't compress and limit the crap out of it. Getgood's sounds easily the worse. It's hollow. Like there is zero low mids.
    Jens sounds the best out of the compressed/limited to hell cuts (which is everyone but Scheps.)
