I haven't read the books but from the show I think Saul was picked for three reasons. 1 - he worked with Vera who is known to have been killed off by the SanTi. 2 - He was the last person Ye Wenjie talked to. 3 - The SanTi tried to kill him.
The story has really just now got started much like the first book the first season is mostly just set up the what most people considered the better books are 2 and 3 mild spoiler the story really gets ten times better when they start to venture into space and things get really weird. Fun fact the guy who was calling out the countdown at NASA in the rocket launch scene is Bobak Ferdowski real life NASA flight director who was a science advisor for the show. The rocket launch was a real project called project Orion that theoretically could work and they even did some test model non nuclear mock ups that worked. But it was scrapped for various reasons. The character from the book is split between Auggie and Jin which I didn't mind because he's kind of a bland character in the books and basically exists only to move the plot he basically has no personality and all his thoughts are internal so they probably split him so they didn't have to do some type of voice over for the entire show. I read the books and overall I Think they did a very good job of taking a very dense novel and making it work for TV and the second and third book I think are much better so the next season should be interesting because it gets much weirder and more cerebral.
Also small spoiler pretty sure it was not the sophon but the cult that took over the car. The second book goes into more detail and I'm guessing the show will that they can mess with electronics but it's limited I don't remember exactly how but the second book and I'm guessing the second season go much more into detail about the aliens .
