We do love videogames here in Brazil. The PS2 piracy reached a level so absurd that i would go to a street market to buy vegetables and someone with a small cart would be selling bootleg movies and ps2 games right at the side of where you would pick up some tomatoes. You could buy like three games for 5 reais(at that time, this was about 2.5 USD) IIRC. Some things have changed tho. Steam adopting Brazil currency and selling games cheaper to match the lower income of the average citizen was awesome and made me switch to pc gaming. Unfortunately the PSN is still way behind on that. The average price they expect you to pay for a game at launch is 250 Reais(77 USD), and that's not really an option for most people.
Sorry in advance for butchering the english language. Language which i've learned only because i played a lot of resident evil with a dictionary at my side.
In my experience, the only people apologizing for butchering a non-native language are the ones who speak/write it better than many natives :) This also applies to you.
thanks duder
And in some places you still can find weird ass pirate copies of PS2 games. Oh the "Bomba Patches" for PES...
My only experience with Brazilians amounts to "the ruiners of MMOs", it's nice to see another side of that.
Your english is really good! keep rocking :)
A lot of Brazilian people learnt English from playing pirated video games and using a Portuguese-English dictionary to understand it.
As a brazillian, this video is gold! Is just amazing watching the outside point of view of the brazillian video game's market.
Right? You never notice how insane it is ultill you get an outsider's perspective
Totally agree with you! We are used with all this crazyness because it is the way it is since we were born
tvps2blogspotcom I just got an Xbox X. In Brazil is 4k Reais. What a Scam!!!!!
MiamiACR Hey look we got a neonazi over here!
As a Brazilian i can say that 90% of the comments start witn " as a Brazilian"
btw, FINALLY a documentary about Brazil that shows more than just Carnaval and favela!
Brazil is a huge country with so many interesting topics to dive into...
Same in many parts of Asia and Middle east, piracy is what drive the consoles sales, and Nintendo always who leaves the market first
Watch Me Play Games wii In many places was the 2nd most popular Nintendo system since NES (same with DS) for how easy to pirate, the thing is Nintendo leave the market if it doesn’t provide enough sale, while Sony,MS even Sega chase the %10-20 of consumers who buy legit games
Absolutely true! Growing up in Dubai in the 80s and 90s kinda got me nostalgic when they were talking about the piracy and the game console sales. I remember a time when my local game stores would warn us about raids as well. Didn't know the gaming industry in Brazil was very similar to the Middle East in the 80s and 90s.
The Middle Eastern gaming market in the 80s and 90s relied heavily on piracy. My dad told me he used to play a NES Clone that had a lot of games pre loaded into them lol.
One cool curiosity to tell, is that TecToy got the license for the Street Fighter game, and she herself developed a Street Fighter 2 for the Master System on her own. Something totally official!
In a 8-bit console with a very impressive fidelity that even impressed Capcom's producer. =)
She?
Oh yea
Fiaspo oi fiaspo
she????
Chapolin was a popular TV Show in Brasil? Who knew.
Also, this scene can also be experienced in Peru, polvos azules.
Fuck I love passionate people talking about things they're passionate about.
For a deeper look at the history of games in Brazil, Red Bull's "Parallels" series by Pedro Falcão (in the white shirt at 15:16) is fantastic! www.redbull.com/int-en/the-history-of-video-games-in-brazil
Thanks, is really difficult to me to find this link to show to english talking people, is a really well done series too.
May I be your friend
Awesome video! Loved this piece of documentary:
2 things i would like to add:
First: You guys have to understand that a video-game costing 2000~4000 R$ and just convert this to the US$ currency isn't too accurate. Because you are not paying 500$ dollars on a 400$ dollar imported console. It sounds fair if was like that, right? I'm not an economist but to put it simply, the minimum monthly wage in Brasil is R$972,00 to this date. This is EXTREMELY expensive, much more than it looks. In a country like here with all this social discrepancy, this is a hobby that many people can't simple afford it. Just to put in perspective, 2000 is like 4 months of grocery for a 4 family people or 4 months of rent in a suburb apartment in the city i live (Belo Horizonte-MG). With games on launch going for R$279,00, this is a quarter of a minimum wage sallary.
Second: As long as the gray market goes, Brazilians have the fame for their resourcefulness, right? Here we had the "Locadoras" or roughly translating the rental places. In the 90's and 00's it was to expensive to buy the cartridges and you didn't had as many options as you have today, like buy, sell or trade used games. So Film rentals would also offer a long range of games to rent. But what makes this really interesting was that the people who used to rent games also put video-games for rent on their stores. So you could go to this store where they would have a bunch of video-games hooked on tvs and you could pay to play games there paying by the hour. This was as comon as arcades in Brasil. You should talk to @izzynobre, a brazillian vlogger who is erradicated in canada and a huge oldscholl games nerd. He has awesome histories about the locadoras, and can provide some cool insight.
This doc is awesome, but sadly is hard to even scratch the surface of this subject here, due the so many nuances. Video-games are so expensive here due to our high import taxes, and in a point in our history, the government put video-games in the same category as slot-machines, so they could be classified as gambling machines and be taxed in 70% in their value, if i'm not mistaken.
I"m looking forward to the next episode!
(sorry bout the grammar, learned to speak english with the video-games!)
I'm Brazilian and I started my history with games playing the Atary and never stoped. I was aware at the time that things here were a little different from abroad, but when I see this today and from the perspective of an outsider it is amazing to say the least. Excellent vídeo! I loved it!
Nice job! But as you said, you didn't scratch the surface. Starting with the PS1 the black game market really began, and 99% of the games sold were pirated.
Video games...
Proving to be the best english teacher that a brazilian boy can have. Hue hue hue hue
I'm so glad there's preservationists working on that stuff. Genesis ports as late as 2009?!
I've heard stories of how gaming was in Brazil from my father. It's really cool to see things he would tell me about put into a video. Brazil and gaming has been such a fascinating topic to me since my father is from São Paulo and we're a big gaming family.
Drew's reaction to the popularity of the Xbox 360 because of the piracy is kinda funny (as a brazilian), this is so normal here, have a "jailbreakble" console can make you way ahead against your competitor in hardware sales (but, obviously kill majory of software sales, in the same time, can make a already big game so popular that also can potentially grow sales a bit, works like a marketing "full game demo" for your friend our friends group, what is crazy). Nice Work Drew and some love for the Jogabilidade Crew
People and companies will never understand that piracy helps them in the long run. 99% of the people that pirate ,wouldn't buy those games anyway, or can't afford to buy them!
Same here in India. I have had friends who refused to buy a PS3, just because it couldn't be jail broken at the time.
In Chile is more or less the same. When the Wii could be "jailbroken," its sales skyrocketed. The same with the 3DS currently.
That's why I bought a Wii. Most Wii games aren't that good.
same in my country algeria.
Great video! Brazil has a huge number of passionate players, and our history on this industry is a large, rich source of documentation like you guys did.Thank you for that approach and keep up the good work!
Awesome job
TecMundo Games o/
Passa a Gamertag
Awesome video! Thanks! As a Brazilian working in a gaming company abroad I'm eager to show this to everyone. It's really spot on and brings back so many memories! :)
Amanda Lira wow that's so cool. What did you study in college to get into gaming industry?
Amanda i program java mobile games with libgdx frameworks tell me is it easy to get a game programming job in company such as pandora ?
i wish someone would do something like this for Venezuela :o is impossible to even get a game here.
Exactly, Jair Bolsonaro is coming. Just wait my friend, one day this communist shit will be defeated, and you will have freedom. This guy will be like the Donald Trump of South America.
What game you need I’ll
Send it to you homie
haha thanks for the offer but i actually met some friends in final fantasy XIV back when i could play it and they have been helping me a lot they even sent me a nintendo switch recently which is crazy! i never ask them anything because i feel terrible asking for games but when they send them they won't let me say no lol
ivaneiroX hey no problem . Strong believer everyone should be able to escape the harsh reality of life every now and then thru gaming . Also to be able to play some of these awesome ass games out now a days ! Lol
Games have been big for me in these times of crisis they help so much my latest experience was Mario Odyssey and i had such a huge smile while playing through the whole game! sounds dumb but it was so amazing lol
Man this was cool! Kind of reminds me of Mexico. All these older systems in certain parts are thriving to this day!
Alejandro Rodarte ikr that's what i thoght when i saw this video
Awesome video! Loved this piece of documentary:

For me, this is the first video that captures the promise of how Cloth Map was pitched. I was starting to run a bit cold on the idea after Ukraine since it didn't quite have that direct video game culture tie-in I was expecting, but this look at Brazil is very exciting. Very much looking forward to seeing more. Great work!
thePoark ikr
Insane at how much these restrictions have impacted Brazil's video game playing populace.
I would much rather call Pac
Man "Eat Eat". 😂 that's a great name.
9:54 cultura mexicana en Brazil
Drew, seriously, this was awesome to watch, as a Brazilian and as a fan of yours. I'm so excited for the next videos, can't wait!
Great Doc ! It is important to mention that in the 80's and 90's besides the consoles, Brazil had a huge connection with Arcades ! They were absolutelly everywhere to play :D !
Diogo Braga Olha o Durango comentando! Hahahahahaha
Abracos do Erva!
Fun fact for everyone. South Africa is also very much like this. A lot less developed though.
15:23 In Brazil we have this important expressions, like "eita carái".
That can be adapted to Holy shit.
Brasileiro é foda kkjkkkjjk
eu sou ouvi agora, lol
HAHHAHAAHHA huebr
Close to spanish, "esta carajo"
This was a terrific start to the series Drew. Can't wait for more :)
Wow, I didn't even notice this was Drew's channel when I clicked on this. Nice!
Amazing content Drew, you gotta be the first to bring this reality to light in such a clear format, as a Brazillian I am amazed by how good your research work was!
Dude AWESOME job! It's really interesting seeing my country from the viewpoint of an outsider, it makes me more aware of how different things are here compared to other places, even when I thought I was already aware of that. Awesome seeing you guys talking to people from sites I visit every day! Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see more content (and how things are over other coutries!)
I remember bringing my PS2 to Brazil. Grandpa tripped over the wire and it broke so we had to take it to the black market to get it fixed. Good times lol
What a fantastic peek into how our neighbors to the South enjoy the same hobby. Great video all around and that Guitar Hero Genesis is a thing of beauty!
Thank you for this, Drew. Utterly fascinating.
Fascinating, I remember hearing about how expensive the PS4 was when it launched in Brazil due to weird import issues. Crazy stuff!
Those Brazilian only consoles are something I've never seen. This was super cool, great to see a side of gaming we don't often get to see.
This Video made me cry. It proves that video games are life and no matter what the situation hey will strive.
Brazil isn't that level of shitness.
Venezuela is and still have a thriving video game market pretty close to what you see in this video.
We're not that poor. We're middle class
Brazil’s current market is very similar to how Saudi Arabia’s game market was from the 90s until the mid 2000s. Piracy drove hardware sales here and pirated grey shops were everywhere. Official electronic game sales were 100% based on US imports and it was an expensive hobby. Not as expensive as Brazil though.
After the PS3 started and lead an official release and distribution in Saudi, the landscape changed. Prices went down for games and hardware. Microsoft and Nintendo followed suite. Government started shutting down grey shops which sold pirated games.
My whole family is from Brazil, and I remember living there for short amounts of time as a kid and wondering why all things related to games where so expensive or just damn near impossible to find. This is so enlightening and informative +1 sub from me!!! saúde!!!
You've done an amazing job at documenting the bizarre gaming scene of Brazil. Awesome! :D
YO I LOVE THIS! After Brazil maybe you can do a series on Korea and Taiwan, they also had a very unique gaming history that wasn't parallel with what was going on with Japan and North America at the time.
Underrated channel proper journalism.
I'm a Brazilian hobbyist game developer and I loved this video so much! It was on point about everything! Definitely subscribing.
Jogabilidade + Cloth Map =
From Brazil, loved this video. It both portrays very well the reality of our video game market, but also is masterfully done a as short doc.
one of the most interesting documentary videos ive watched.
I'm Brazilian and i loved the video at all, our game market is so complex but in the same time is unic, is so great to see that people over the world are interessing on.
Keep up the good work Guys!!
At 14:30, this Lanzetta guy said that those mobile ports for this white Genesis would work on cartridges, which isn't true. This console is a SOC (system on a chip), which runs a genesis emulator on a slightly better hardware and that's what make those phone games work on it. The only actual Genesis part of those is the external case.
Came here to comment just that, this is accurate.
well who knows
could be running on a cheap FPGA w/ a 68k softcore
Those are pretty much the same as the TecToys ones, except the ones made in china have cheaper parts and are unlicensed. Its a funny thing cause those clones are ALSO sold in brazil. Now that the new mega drive made some kind of success, some big stores are selling clones with generic names like "16 bit console" for half of the price that TecToy sells its own version. Of the course the video quality is barebones, and they doesn't have features like custom menu and sd card support.
I care
This was great, can't wait for more of your footage here. Awesome work.
I'm 50% Brazillian but I never lived there, this sh*t is hella interesting
This is honestly one of the best videos I've seen on youtube. Seriously good production guys!
Sao Paulo has great graffiti.
Some of the best in the country... look up 'Beco do Batman' for a proper sample ;)
True
You should take a look at Curitiba.
The Sao Paulo mayor have just painted all of them with a grey ulgly color...
Foggen so sad the mayor just replaced them with Bland gray walls. Here in Belém the closest we have to that grafitti consists mostly of ugly scribles in the streets
Complex indeed. I had no idea about all the various strategies taken to bring in/produce playable games in an economy unfriendly to them.
Luchadeer seems to be popular in Brazil.
i don't even know what that is
so it isn't any mascot
The best videos, I mean the very best videos, are the ones that catch you by surprise. This was one of those for me. Excellent work bud.
Sim jogar video game aqui no Brasil é extremamente caro.
Cara vc.ainda joga ps2 ?
PC Master Race e Steam mandaram lembranças.
Minha esposa me deu um Xbox1 X no Brasil. Vai ser 4 mil reais. E um absurdo!!!!
Thanks for coming over to Brazil to produce such an entertaining and informative video, Drew! Cheers!
We have the GTA 6 for PS2!
Phenomenal work!! I've always wanted to know about the Brazilian games' market; this was an excellent primer. Cloth Map is absolutely killing it!
This was delightful! Thanks Drew!
Thank you so much for making and sharing this video! I'm from Brasil and I had no idea of all those cool information because i never lived in São Paulo. Still missing those days back in the 80's, when we used to rent Master System and Nintendo games.
*Corél! Olha o Corééééél!!!*
Coréllll 0:58
quase me mijei aqui.
Hahahahaha
As an old-time gamer here in Brazil, this video ressonates with me in many ways! I loved the brazilian-version of the games showed (Turma da Mônica no Castelo do Dragão and Chapolim vs Dracula). Keep the good work in this channel, I just subscribed and will see previous video, waiting for the next Brazilian ones. :-D
I feel so lucky to live where I do and have access to quality computer parts. I just got a HTC Vive last week and now I feel even more appreciative of it.
I'm a big-time gamer born and raised in São Paulo and I really enjoyed this video, awesome stuff.
Awesome job. Loved this.
This is the best comment section I've read on UA-cam, especially considering this video has 400,000 views and is about video games. Lot of interesting input and respectful discussions that are fun to read.
Brazilian sure love their KOF.
This is a great video BTW. Things are similar here in SEA.
This video was a really well done job, covers many aspects of how the industries stabilished here over the decades, and how it is now. Looking foward to your other vids.
Saúde!
Ok the last 25 seconds had me cracking up.
that was so brazilian it hurts
is that titanic song
E. Milis My heart will go on
The off-beat Titanic song, lmao...
You can hear someone saying. "Brazil is sinking!" in a reference to Titanic
I'm Brazilian and I learned so much with this video. I will definitely subscribe.
Drew this was the best video yet. Keep it up duder!
This is exactly the type of video game content I want to see. Love to see how video games have impacted the world in different ways and places.
Being a brazilian gamer myself I feel pride that the story and nuances of this amazing hobby is being covered in such a nice way.
We have it rough, but that just increases or passion for games. Have a nice stay :)
Um salve para a equipe Jogabilidade! Muito bom!
Quem são esses caras?
O melhor podcast brasileiro, desde os tempos do Now Loading.
Intense Opinionated Alt Chick o segundo melhor podcast do Brasil. Depois do overloadr
Amazing video guys, great job! So much nostalgia for a brazilian dude in his thirties :)
Found the video randomly through reddit, now you got my sub.
Outstanding video, Drew. Can't wait to see the rest of the Brazil pieces.
@3:05 he just described the core gaming scene in most of the 3rd world countries. Piracy still drives hardware sales to this day.
the ingenuity to do the things the people do here makes my day when i see it
Greetings from the Jogabilidade fans!
One more brazilian fan here, amazing video man, its funny seeing surprise reactions to shit that was natural for the market here.
My option for gaming in BRazil is Steam. Steam is the only possible place where you feel like paying a fair price for games, not even mentioning the Steam Sales.
And even this popular running online market wants to be taxed by socialist forces where people deny, but is present and strong.
The ridiculously inflated state is one big point of why Nintendo officialy left Brazil's market, they were paying huge taxes, not selling much, because a single portable cartridge would be R$200,00-299,00, aprox U$60,00, which pretty much is one forth of Brazil's minimum wage... Brazilian taxes are fucked up.
Uh oh, you said "Socialist Forces". Now people will be saying: "It wasn't Socialist Influence!"
exatamente

Value is not created from labor, it's created by people's interest / need of a product / service.
Very well made video, finally something good on my recommended feed, thanks and love from Brazil :)
Cadê o polystation??
Amazing job! I'm Brazilian and our world to play a game it's very particular. Mainly in '80 and '90. Thank you so much for your visit. And take the idea of café and food for your market. hahaha
I'd love to see a feature on playing those crazy down-converted games. SNES Guitar Hero is mindblowing.
I did not want this video to end. So interesting to see how it compares to the games I had in the U.S.
Easily the best video yet.
This explains when I'm watching people streaming video games from Brazil, it's quite often games of the past
Those 18 minutes flew by. Very interesting video.
I just saw the video... Man... That report was awesome! See the old days of videogames here in Brazil is so nostalgic! I love it.
There are some mistakes in the videos.
When Andre from Jogabilidade says we have a Master System clone, he's wrong. We have a original licensed Master System produced by a brazilian company called TecToy. They were 100% licensed by Sega.
And Gus Lanzeta said Dactar from Milmar was a licensed console, he's wrong too. And he's wrong when he says about the multigame cartridge, they were 100% bootleg stuff. Dactar was one of many Atari clones produced here (Dactar, Supergame, Dismac, and others). The first and only company that was authorized to produce Atari 2600 and distribute cartridges in Brazil was Polyvox. Just like TecToy with Master System, Polyvox produced Atari here and the console looked just like the american ones, but with the company's brand instead of Sega or Atari.
That was amazing! Really looking foward to the rest of the series! Abraços do Brasil!
I love how 7-1 is in the recommendations.
Sateenkaarikasvo Almost 4 years and i still see that recommendation. UA-cam is Savage.
Everyday is a different 7-1. Brasil is not for beginners.
Johnny Welton so true lol
Sateenkaarikasvo I love how there is a 9 11 in the comment section
Sateenkaarikasvo it was in mine too 😂
But im brazilian 😔
I was so happy to see someone as influential as you covering some of the backstory of games in Brazil and how confusing it used to be back then. As we tent to say here in Brazil, we have "our special Brazilian way" to solve our problems, and it as no different with games. Even though we might come into some hardships, gaming is still a real passion to most of us, and hopefully someday, things will get easier and chepper for everyone.
As a brazilian born and raised in Rio it's always nice to watch stuff like that. Red Bull made an amazing documentary about the exact same subject but I can't wait to see the rest of the footage you got. Keep it up!
Loving all the GB representation in here! Great video Drew! My favorite part was when All Star played.
i subbed just cause of this video, one of my friends is from brazil. Hes known one of my other friends for about 10 years and he never used a microphone. It was only like 2/3 months ago he FINALLY USED a mic. We had theories he was a lil kid thinking it was cool to have north american buddies, we thought it was one of my friends gf's from another country that they been talking forever to each other. BUT NOPE his explanation was " I dont wanna look like Michael Jackson " LOL i was ded after
If it wasnt for my buddy EEE i would have never watched this. I like to learn about Brazilian culture cause of him now
Amazing, glad to see gaming culture videos like this, something not many people would dare to, or even care about covering. keep up the great work
