As a composer, I find these videos incredibly helpful! I disagree with all of those who say that he needs to play more. Examples of flute playing and repertoire exist EVERYWHERE on UA-cam. This is informative about the instrument, it isn't entertainment folks. This video is for those who want to learn more about the construction of the instrument, how it works, and its history, as well as hearing some of the player's advice and experience on performing in an orchestra.
JJay Berthume Thanks for your comments! And for those of you who DO want to hear Sam play, we have a few examples here: City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: Uncover the history of the French flute with Sam Coles
JJay Berthume Another video with Sam, just performance: City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: In Performance: Debussy's Syrinx with Sam Coles
JJay Berthume And other with chatting and performance: Witold Lutosławski: Aleatoric Method
JJay Berthume BRUH THIS AINT A HISTORY LESSON. The violin dude talked about violin straihht up. the french horn woman showed us french horn and what it sound like!!!! OF XOURSE WE EXPEXT THAT FRM THIS VIDEO. And then we realized we sat through a HISTORY LESSON BRUH IM DONE. Yes, I think you understand my point. Like dude didnt even bother demonstrating prelude de la faun or something! hell.. play peter and the wolf, show the character the flute is capable of as an instrument.
I'm not saying that he is wrong or something like that. I'm saying that, and this is my point, that we sat through a history lesson rather than a demonstration of the qualities of this instrument. Comparatively to the other videos provided by other instruments in the orchestra, providing us with WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE. No opinion or right or wrong just an observation of this video and what it has to offer. Very interesting vid, come on man. All the other instruments demonstrated capability and musicality, this one just talked about the history. boehm and this is that. I have the book of 15 grand studies boehm provided, its great. Galway reccomended it at a master he had in Dallas over 6 years ago.
I agree. These are very helpful with composing. It can really tell us how to get the best out of each instrument to produce a larger orchestral sound! I love it.
Instrumentalists showed all the different techniques for their instruments in the other videos of the series, would've been nice to have that in this one as well.
The interviewees on this channel really do an extraordinary job
I love this whole series of videos, but I agree with some commenters who wish there was a little more playing of the instruments so we can hear what the musicians are talking about.
Hi Ian, try this out: City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: Uncover the history of the French flute with Sam Coles
And this! City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: In Performance: Debussy's Syrinx with Sam Coles
Wish we could actually hear the instrument...............
Unlike a lot of orchestral instruments, most people are very familiar with the sound of a flute.
@@aaaatttt101 and
So why on Earth didn't he actually play it?
Damn, wasnt expecting a history lesson

+Cerdd_Wen yay!!

Hi everyone - want to learn more about the flute, from Sam Coles? Check out this new film we made in Paris! City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: Uncover the history of the French flute with Sam Coles
Lots of playing in this film!
his flute is so beautiful
kara s Very much so....
i wish he couldve played/demonstrated the instrument more rather than just explain its history.
Try these out: City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: Uncover the history of the French flute with Sam Coles
And this: City of Light: Paris, 1900-1950: In Performance: Debussy's Syrinx with Sam Coles
i just watched to see him play...
Compare this to the clarinet one which is brilliant - showing how the sound is produced, why the instrument is structured the way it is, playing technique etc.
What about playing different dynamics? Registers? Chalemau? Legato? Staccato? In between? Range?
I wish the video is like or the same video content/explanation as violin, cello, and double bass.
Curious to know more about the difference between the silver and gold flutes. I would think that the metal used for any flute would be a silver color, but dipped in either silver or gold. And is this real silver or gold, or just a coloring.
I think they are real silver and gold (at least alloys with copper to make them stronger), though with cheaper instruments they might just be plated. However, looking at it I think it doesn't always matter. ua-cam.com/video/Ffmz4HLUloI/v-deo.html
The best instrument in the world! Thanks for the fascinating insight from a fellow flautist. Happy playing :-)
Agree!!
HE'S NOT PLAYING BRUH
You know, theres always a cool boy who plays a flute.
What?
Zachary Brown add the Harp.
Well, in an all boys school, all the flute players are boys, so...
In Shrek, the most powerful character is obviously the Flutist.
Also, being in the same category with all the fancy girls, 😙
@@zacharybrown6723 Aurele Nicolet.....
the history of flute dates back to ancient India
When I was in primary school between the ages of 8,9 and 10 I always wanted to play the flute
I just want to get a flute just to play ancient Japanese music on my spare time.
Western flute music is good too, consider joining the family :(
It's nice in here, for real
Omg I'm plqying the Flute in middle school!

+Will Dorrance I recently picked up the alto sax actually
Chase Louie Ahh cool, I play flute and wanna learn the violin or cello
Chase Louie I already know violin but I also want to learn cello, I'm currently learning double bass, also Dizi a Chinese flute and lastly a erhu a Chinese violin
Great player!
I would hasten to add that a little more information on the keys and structure would have added more lustre to the presentation.
hi, im trying to figure out which instruments are being played in this scene? The Sabotage (1936) - Alfred Hitchcock would someone please tell me if you know, thank you
Sam, marvelous work my friend !
This has been excellent!
I play tenor sax and I recently tried out flute because I was considering learning it and I could barely get it to make a sound 😭
What's the easiest to learn? The flute, the clarinet or the oboe?
earthpower in my opinion it would be the flute, just because you dont have to worry much about squeaking and with the oboe and clarinet you have to pay attention to that. Each of those instruments will take time to learn but it's definitely worth it in the end
I like all of them but I do mostly prefer flute. I would like to learn how to play at some point :P Thank you for answering!
earthpower Of course! I play flute so my answer may have been a bit biased but if you need help you can ask me for anything :)
Shanti Johnson
Thank you! Can you give me any recommandations of flutes that are for beginners but are good? And maybe a book i could start with?
earthpower Selmer is definitely a good brand for beginner instruments, so is Pearl and Bundy I believe. I would definitely recommend going to a music repair shop and asking them for advice on a good flute to start out with. As for music books to start out with I highly recommend the Standard of Excellence book one for flute by Bruce Pearson. It's a red book and it helped me a lot starting out :)
please do an alto flute video
What is that thing that you can turn at the top of the flute
It's called the crown.
Why can we still never hear the flutes then :/
Get involved in our #popupplanets! We want to see you playing your favourite extract of Holst's The Planets and you have a chance to win a pair of tickets to our concert in London on Saturday 1 Oct: ua-cam.com/video/9UY29P2CW1o/v-deo.html
I couldnt find very much coverage of English 17th,18th and 19th century flute music even though the flute was incredibly popular and one of the most highly regarded instrument and skill sets to aquire in English culture. Would you do some research into the topic and producec some performances and vidoes too. Thank you. I took up flute in april after 10 years of waiting to find the right instrument (a rudall carte in cocuswood #7290) my ambition for many years has been to learn to read music fluently and write and bind my musical thoughts into a collection of books.
Omg this was the best time ever
I really enjoyed this video, but I was just wondering, have you considered making a video about the alto flute?
Weston Gilbert Glad you liked the video. You might also like this one: ua-cam.com/video/N5dZNFinTkA/v-deo.html We will at some point make more instrument films. Thanks for the suggestion of the alto flute!
Thanks for the video. This is very helpful! :D
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for spending time on our channel.
these videos are so great
Why didn't we hear it?
Fascinating!
Flute gang

YEAH
BTW : the headjoint is conical !!!
Interesting
The flute is literally so difficult to start learning.
It takes a ton of muscle memory to get your lips just right to even make a decent sound on it and it is pretty hard to get used to balancing it on your hands because they're unusually far away from your head when holding it.
Second-year flutist here,
• The technique isn't too hard; it seems complicated and difficult at first, it comes naturally in a short time.
• Think it's about having fun, practicing to get better to be able to satisfy yourself with harder pieces and songs.
• Balancing the instrument will be obtained shortly likewise, I would only advise warming up the muscles beforehand.
@@dan-us6nk you are right. sometimes it does get a bit tricky though
Why didn't he play his flute like other players?
Do you show yourself playing on other videos.? see my dd playing on Emma Belfort music if u wish and give any feedback or help. Thanks.
Hello - please check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/N5dZNFinTkA/v-deo.html
The stories are interesting, but... WE WANT TO HEAR YOU PLAY!
What's the song that is played at 01:23 ?
Debussy - "Preludio para la siesta de un fauno" in spanish. Too lazy to find the original french name.
Great!
Y’all what instrument should I play in higher school I don’t know how to read notes or anything 😭
Drums or Try piano if you wanna learn music😭🖐🏾 as a flute player myself flute is great but we barely have any music without accompanying another person same thing as drums. :/
Yeah now I totally know how the flute sounds I'll start learning now!😒
Javier Guzmán I was thinking just have same thing! I thought the purpose was to introduce this instrument to people who are new to it
Thx
Hard instrument played it but I will relearn it
What song does the orchestra play
That's an extract from Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
could you possibly send me the link
I'm having awful problems trying to get notes in the upper register. Low notes are fine, but anything above D in the upper register i just can't get - they just keep going back to an octave below. Is this something to do with the keys where my left thumb is, or is it my embouchure? Can anyone advise please?! Thanks.
I think you're talking about the middle register (2nd octave) - the upper register is the 3rd octave and has very different fingerings to the 1st and 2nd octaves. To get the middle register the fingering is the same as the lower register (don't change the left thumb) but you use a faster air speed and tighter embouchure. There are some helpful tutorials on UA-cam that you could check out. Hope this helps and good luck getting your high notes :)
midget7 Thanks for the advice, yes it's the middle register i'm having problems with! I've been a clarinettist for around 25 years but have always wanted to try flute. I'll have a look at some tutorial vids. Thanks again :)
We have a new instrument film - EUPHONIUM - coming out on 23 Feb 2018 - make sure you subscribe to be the first to see it! TRAILER: ua-cam.com/video/U1nNyGLD170/v-deo.html
I've played flute for 2 years and I still sometimes struggle to play the faster notes. I also play oboe.
+Trishvi Nguyen practice, yo
Trishvi Nguyen I've played for five years so far, and yeah I know how you feel tbh. I suggest working on the chromatic scales and work on articulation along side working with getting the notes down

Afternoon of a Faun emulates the boredom of a hot saturday afternoon. Don't shoot me, I love classical music very much. Love Bach the most, Mozart 2nd, Handel 3rd, Beethoven 4th. But I simply hated some pieces like AOAF and some composers like Batok and Mahler.
I play the flute
All the musicians in the series play their instruments and explain how they work. THIS MAN JUST TELLS US THE HISTORY OF THE INSTRUMENT UGHHHH I DON'T CAREEEEEE

Who hasn’t heard a flute before?
The Flute Sounds Like A Bird.
Like most all these videos on musical instruments, the hosts neglect to really demonstrate at some length the sound/beauty of the instrument to "wet the musical appetite" of the viewer! After all, the "sound" of the instrument is what really "counts" & how it fits into the whole orchestral experience!!! "Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! How about the infamous "schweinett", or 3 strings stretched across a pig's posterior & you pluck them with your teeth!!!!!
Brannen flute
I love these videos but I have no interest on the Western flute it still sounds beautiful but I like the Dizi the Chinese flute to me it looks easier but i can't be sure of that because I haven't tried it yet
So *that’s* why flutes are considered woodwinds. I’ve been so confused about this.
I guess "metalwind" sounds too weird ;)
It differs from other woodwinds because it is made of METAL and not WOOD!!!!
