- Today we will be going through the BEST Fish you can keep in your fish ponds in Stardew Valley where we will go through a couple of criteria in order to determine the best fish you can keep for roe. We will determine this over the price of the base roe and aged one as well. While the other criteria will be over the rare items each fish has a chance in producing.
Most fish have a chance to produce some pretty valuable and rare items which can help you on your farm.

I would definitely add Super Cucumber to the list. It's an fairly easy catch in year one/early game and while yes - very slow - it can be early access to iridium. This is especially helpful to players who don't feel comfortable going into Skull Caverns or with underpowered gear which is likely in the early game. It can even be found in garbage cans or traveling cart negating the need to catch it all together.
Yeah true that one is quite good for that reason also the pond changing color is a really neat little thing.
I didn't have the bus unlocked yet, and it wasn't quick it was a nice way of seeing myself every few days being able to smelt a bar knowing what I was getting towards.
Skull cavern is very easy as long as you have a ton of bombs and clone a lot of jade to buy staircases. Just go to floor 100+ and you can farm over 100 iridium core each time you visit.
yep, this is what i did for all of year one until i caught a blobfish from the night market :)
The one that got me was the fish that asked for bombs. I was like what on earth are you gonna do with that??? lol
Yeah some requests are really weird for sure, I hated that the blobfish aksed for a mudstone I needed a long time to find one.
I totally agree with all of these, however as a member of the crabcake gang I always go with a crab pond. The roe sucks, but you get trash to process, beach totems, the one time pearl from Willy, and of course an unlimited supply of crabs for cooking 🦀

It took my Rainbow Trout 8 years to produce their first Prismatic shard. Better ways to get them that that.
True, its nice to only have one pond and someday it will generate since it will be random.
Sea Urchins are highly profitable as well because the fish reproduces when in the pond, you can account for a sea urchin every so often on top of the roe. Plus, sea urchins are easy to come by, and the max capacity of the pond is 10 from the very start.
so those can be a nice way to get some extra gold in the game, never thought about them to be honest.

I also like having one for eels, as they're kind of a pain to catch (certain hours, only during rain, etc.), but are used for recipes like the spicy eel, so I don't have to rely on luck for them and can just fish some out every now and then and then let them build back up to their 10.

Yeah thats a really worthwhile one to have free extra luck always. The Midnight carp is also pretty good to have for the seafoam pudding as well.
I always have sturgeon, eel, and sea cucumber for spicy eel and lucky lunches I will also do midnight carp and squid for seafoam pudding
Yeah thats the perfect combo for sure. I have the same as well and a blob fish for some pearls when I get lucky.
For fish pond i suggest dont do it for profit but for other item, for me is lava eel (spicy fried eel), blobfish (pearl) rainbow trout (prismatic shard), super cucumber (iridium ore), octopus (omni geode) and sturgeon (i only put it because i need caviar for the last bundle)
Well yeah items do tend to be more valuable in the end game since for profits you have other sources.
Fish that change pond’s color should be added: Slime jack, Void Salmond, Lava eel, super cucumber

I generally don't do fish ponds for profit, I'll use them for utility. My finished farm usually has 6-8 ponds. In the beginning, I'll do rainbow trout, then add sturgeon, flounder, midnight carp, sea cucumbers, and squid as I catch them. Once full, the midnight carp, flounders, and sea cucumbers get fished out to 1 to make Sea Foam Pudding and Lucky Lunches. As I finish my fishing list, I'll start replacing them with stingrays and lava eels.
This leaves me with plenty of Sea Foam Pudding and Lucky Lunches for the rest of my playthrough and gives me a steady supply of Dragon Fangs in the endgame, especially with the new Animal Crackers.
Slime Jacks not only change the color of the pond, they give you slime--I pop those into the slime egg press and sell the eggs.

I found that flounder was a surprisingly nice fish pond with giving consistent roe compared to the lava eel and super cucumber ponds and just being good to have for extra roe for more money, I would also advise putting midnight carp and normal eel along with flounder just to get more ingredients for sea foam pudding or other fish items that are seasonal or rare
Yeah the Midnight Carp can be quite good to have for that sweet Sea Foam Pudding.

Eh I got lots of prismatic shards from the skull cavern so I don't think rainbow trout is worth it. But the stingray is quite useful.
Currently I have 4 - Lava Eel, Sturgeon, Super Cucumber, and Stingray. I have all the caviar I need though, and have the warp obelisk for the island, so might be time to swap them out. I do like the purple color pond though! Blobfish is tempting, I didn't consider the pearl thing.
The Lava eel is the way to go in money making while some of the fish that change the color of the pond can be quite interesting. You can either go for the Blobfish for pearls or the spook fish for treasure chests.
sea cucumbers for Willy and lucky lunches, squid, midnight carp, and flounder for seafoam pudding, sturgeon for caviar and sardines for Dish o the sea. I love my ponds!

The fish farm has a ton of space for fish ponds and you can't farm too many crops there anyway. So, besides planting trees,, fibers, and grass, you can make a lot of fish ponds.
I honestly want to keep one pond of sunfish and one of void fish. My farm is pretty big and I am not using it for primarily farming so why not some fish ponds? XD. I love doing a wide variety of things and this will add some chores occasionally hehe. I will keep this list in mind as I build up my fish pond and my store of rare fish.
Honestly I would never advise people to go for rainbow trout or spook fish. You can go 50 in games years easily and never see a prismatic shard from your trout, the chance is so much abysmally lower than simply killing things in the mines. And spook fish over time with the treasure chest will be less gold than simply doing lava eels and their roe (plus useful items).
The lion fish can give you a tiger slime egg worth 8,000 gold 👌

I'm currently starting up my Lava Eel Fish Pond empire haha. The roe, magma geodes, and spicy eel are all awesome. They only downside is getting started since they're hard to catch.
ohh yeah but if you catch one and put it into a pond after a while it will reproduce and you can just move one to another pond until you fill all the ponds with them!
Is it worth getting a pond up to capacity 10 (on lava eel for example) and then take out some of the fish, sell them, and then have it go back up to capacity again? It'll still continue to produce roe that way and then you can get money from selling them. Debating whether or not that is worth doing. What do you think?
Well the drop chance is highly dependant on the fish population. So yes you get roe if you take out some of them but you will miss out in the items like spicy eel or more since some of them are dependant on the number of fish. The quality of the fish will bw normal as well so it isnt that worth it, in the long run.

my favorite fish is the largemouth bass. i also try and get squid, flounder and midnight carp as soon as possible for the seafoam pudding .

Hmmm well it will be much easier having a pond on your farm because you will be able to get it anytime you want. But catching it can also work quite well.
I'm having hard time progressing the lava eel basalt request. Opened 40 magma geodes but no basalt

Eels are a really great thing for the first year, Sturgeon is also worth to keep in the ponds.

yeah those are also quite good but overall compared to these it's a bit different. Also the Super Cucumber colors the pond in purple.
