I love watching these ink exploration videos - they are so informative and enjoyable to watch. I’m slowly growing my ink collection and now I think I may have to include some brown inks!
I'm a new viewer and I must tell you that your videos are unique in quality and simply beautiful. It's so great to watch someone loving things as I do. :)
I've been writing a lot with Rohrer & Klingner Sepia these days. Another one I like a lot is J. Herbin Cacao du Bresil. I always have a pen with brown ink. Thanks for the video.
@@breadyegg I liked Verdigris a lot, but compared to most of the photos I saw, it has more green in its composition; it's still a very beautiful blue-black.
@@lukaszpokoju Yes, it may lean more towards gray; but in my experience, it varied a lot between nibs. J. Herbin Cacao du Bresil also has gray in its composition; but brown prevails.
Thank you for this helpful comparison, Alicia! I love brown inks and I have most of the ones you featured except for SBRE Brown. My favorite is the Stone of Gion.
I'm rather new to fountain pens. So far I've been exploring pens and next I'll explore inks. But at first I wrote quite a lot with Waterman's Green ink, then - as this was the only ink I had - it was suddenly 'too much green' and then I discovered Waterman's Brown ink and I've been using it quite a lot and I'm still not bored with it. I think it has a bit of nice shading to it, too. Although after months and months of using brown ink(s) (the other one was Herbin "Lie de Thé", which I also quite like) I'm thinking of trying out somethink new. Something red, perhaps. But, yes: brown will probably be one of my favourites:) Thank you for this video! I really like the waterproof Platinum ink you had there.
My bottle of Walnut has a gorgeous red undertone. Maybe yours does, too, and UA-cam's compression made it disappear on my monitor. Noodler's is known for its inconsistent batches but I've found out that a lot of them are more consistent after a gentle but thorough mixing. The only thing I have against Walnut is that it has, with most of my paper, too much show through on the other side of the page for my taste, but I love, love, love the color! Thanks for the video. Your handwriting is gorgeous!
Don’t forget the olive green and that deep muted red. Luckily my parent’s taste’s were more colonial, traditional, we only had those 70’s colors in our kitchen.
Some of my friends had adventurous parents in the decor department: orange/brown shag carpet, or the mustard yellow and lime green mix. These were painful for me to be near, as an aesthetic child; they made me feel actually seasick and I had to try and focus on something else in the room or leave!
El color marrón y el sepia son colores interesantes y es una alternativa al aburrido color negro. Por cierto tienes una letra muy bonita , que tengas un feliz dia y espero pronto mas videos.
As a die - hard fan of blue inks especially Akkerman’s Delfts Blauw and have only one brown and it’s SBRE Brown. I chose it for my Sailor “White Russian” medium nib and soon found it to appear more orange than brown. I think it looks better in the broader nibs like Western medium or broad nibs and I keep it inked in a SheafferTarga medium all the time.
Wonderful video of some excellent brown inks! Really like how present this too. What is the little spiral swatch book to the left of the notebook you're putting samples on? Looks like it's very handy to have. Thanks.
Loved this video! I do agree that waterproof inks tend to be boring but I recently got Sailor Seiboku and Souboku, and they give off shading and sheen so nicely. Would love to see more of your waterproof/resistant inks.
Seeing all your brown inks was fun. I do wish we could have seen a close-up of all the inks though. Brown inks are my favorite and I'm always looking for new interesting browns to try. J Herbin Lie de The writes beautifully in my TWSBI mini. I also enjoy JH Cacao du Bresil , a grey brown, for sketching. Diamine Ochre has wonderful shading. Brown inks seem to look best on ivory paper. Now I'm going to look into Stone Road. Thanks for sharing!
Interesting inks. I only have a few browns, but I really like how they look on a Leuchtturm notebook. The brown on ivory is a good combo. I have Noodler’s Kiowa Pecan and Beaver Brown in pens right now. I got Mont Blanc Toffee Brown and Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz as well. I may put that J. Herbin brown on my list. The shimmer is a pain, but the inks are really interesting in how they shade, shimmer, and sheen.
Fantastic! Great info, I love your handwriting so uniform and beautiful, reminds me of the days when handwriting was an art form. I would love to see the “golden browns” and red/burgundy. I’m looking for a good ink for my pelikan star ruby.
I thought I would be happy with just one fountain pen, and a few inks. I didn’t take into consideration that I might be in the mood for a brown ink when my pen was full of gray ink. How much more convenient it would be if when the mood struck me, I’d have a pen filled with brown ink and ready to go. Is this one of the reasons people wind up with 3 to 150 pens??
JJust have found your video and wow. Love them. Very interesting and always soothing to watch, as i slowly work my way through all your videos i thought i would ask, what size nib do you prefer? I am still building a collectiong i happen to have mostly mediums but i love the size yours are. Do you prefer a Fine or Extra Fine? Keep up the videos :)
Hello and welcome! Thank you for stopping by and commenting. :) I think fines are my favorite. I’m a small writer. Sometimes I’ve enjoyed an extra fine, depending on the nib. Have fun collecting, and writing!
Greetings from England on a cold and wet day. Thank you for the video. I'm sure somewhere in the comments someone has asked what nib you have in the dip pen....maybe not. So could you maybe let us know what it is as it seems to write beautifully, as do you. Many thanks, and wishing you a Happy Christmas.
A recent test revealed that most of my inks fade rapidly in the sun. Furthermore, inks fading in the sun, or so I read, eventually will also fade in complete darkness, like inside a notebook. As a result, heading forward, I'm thinking of standardizing on Platinum Classic (iron gall) and Pigmented inks. Perhaps they are decently fade-resistant.
How long an ink that can't take ultra violet exposure will last in a notebook depends on the ink. It also depends on what you mean by "eventually". I have several inks that fade in the sun, but that have lasted for fifty years in my journals that are just fine. Real iron gall ink does n't work well in fountain pens, so I wouldn't try that. Even pigmented inks can clog a pen unless you get serious about doing a thorough cleaning on a regular basis. If you want true permanence, meaning up to four hundred years, your best bet is to buy archival rated inks, and archival quality paper. This doesn't just mean acid free paper. Like the ink, it must be rated archival quality. It doesn't do much good to have an "eternal" ink unless the paper is also just as good. And don't forget the cover and binding of the notebook. I've had notebook where the ink and paper held up for a couple of decades, but where the binding just fell apart through normal aging.
@@jamesaritchie1 I thank you for your input. I don't need 400 years, but it would be nice to have ink that lasts as long as I will, say 20 years. And in other colors along with black. Can you give me any specific recommendations? BTW I'm not concerned about ruining pens, I only buy readily available cheap pens.
@@ichirofakename then you probably shouldn’t have any problems with modern iron gall inks. Very water and sun resistant and reasonably good to clean. And great to see it change colour as they all do.
You should take a look at the De Atramentis Document line. If you are not concerned with pens, Rohrer & Klingner Salix is a good option. Pelikan 4001 Blue-black can also be considered, as it contains a small amount of iron gall. Pelikan also makes "Fount India", a permanent ink that doesn't fade; but it will clog the pen if you leave it too long. These are "normal" inks with which I have experience, and which are relatively easy to find.
Nothing quite like a nice, rich shade of brown, Alicia. I have all of the above, save for SBRE Brown - Akkerman have postponed deliveries until Covid-19 has (at least) become better contained; I do however, possess their 'Dutch Masters - Oker', which is super on virtually every brand of fountain pen friendly paper - I highly recommend it - juicy, moderately saturated, & will brighten anyone's day ! &, I might add, being of Dutch-Indonesian extraction, consider it most apposite for you. I like your unbranded dip pen - I have a wooden handled model with a Brause nib (which, at best, is somewhat temperamental - largely dependent upon ink used, & ensuring the nib is 'cured' with heat, beforehand). Wishing you & your partner the happiest of Christmas', & let us all consider a braver New Year - do take care, Best, Andrew :D P.S.
