Listening to Floor sing daily for the past 4 months has totally changed my life. I have been suffering chronic illness after meningitis for the past 10 years and I felt very burnt out and sad going through the daily struggles. Floor has a voice that impacted me so much that I have turned into a very positive and grateful person. Nightwish and Floor will never know what they did for me but it literally means everything. The sound of Floors voice touches me like no other :)

There is a better way to live and feel even if there is an underlying condition. I´m not a ´whore for the cold world` anymore. Floor´s voice was the key that allowed me to cry for the first time in 10 years. Floor allows me to release those emotions built up and experience and enjoy the beauty of this world. :)

Considering that you had no idea about the theme of the song before, your reaction was impeccable. As an artist, you have the necessary sensitivity to feel / understand, even without knowing the explicit context. I mean, you're an exception, which unfortunately confirms a rule. That is why many of us do not recommend this piece of art to beginners, because they risk not catching the essence. You felt the emotional shock, the struggle, even so. Tuomas called "catharsis" the live performance of that song in an interview.
I hope this will not scare you, and that you will continue :)

I was there - and Floor live....
She is almost a weapon to have in front. We were 12.500 people - pretty in complete stunned crazy happiness up til now - and then Tuomas and Floor pulled that one out of nowhere. Floor hammered all of us in the gut, ripping our souls out (we all knew the song and the background - but had only heard Anette's version).
Fact: Tuomas had the technicians kill Floor's voice at the end in his earplugs to keep concentrated.
This tour through a deep personal depression where Tuomas commits suicide on stage instead of in reality - the chaotic thoughts in his mind illustrated in the music's ups and downs, Marko's desperation in his voice, I won't mention Floor - you felt her yourself. The heartbeat stopping - Tuomas's parents words at the end.
The whole concert was a giant emotional roller-coaster - like nothing I have ever experienced before - ending with the scientists Richard Dawkins on stage after another masterpiece...
You now know why The Nightwish Army exists - no other band can perform experiences like this - and this song is not alone in being an epic masterpiece... More coming👍
And great reaction from you - you got hit, got quiet - and yes Edgar Allen Poe is used here.

I know how it is to have mental health problems so of course I understand why he left but it still sucks. And the fact that Richard Dawkins came out on stage at the very end....so epic! I mean I was speechless when I saw him walk out on stage. But to have actually been there in person....amazing!

This was Tuomas' most personal and painful songs, was written after he fired Tarja the first lead singer and after the fallout he received and hate by many fans that solely blamed him, but it was a unanimous band decision. He went into a deep depression and he wrote this song, he was quoted as saying he killed himself in this song so not to do it in real life. To this day playing the song takes an emotional toll on him and takes him back to those dark days. The last part of the song, Mother and Father were actually words said to him in his darkest moments back then. If you notice in the video, it keeps showing his face and he is tormented by the song. The other band members even check on him and at the end Emppu and Marko join him in unity. They also signed off on the letter firing Tarja. It was earth shattering stuff in Finland at the time, the open letter, even the Finnish Prime Minister of that time was questioned about it. He also has bit from the Pit and Pendulum sprinkled in.

I guarantee, that when you start to piece together the history of this band and especially the pain wrapped up in what this song it will have a much more emotional impact, its Brilliants stands on its own, but the genius of this song is more apparent when you understand what happened. Go back and watch the "End of a Era" 2005 concert the last show with Nightwishes first singer Tarja, understand that this band had been together since high school, every member is brilliant in their own, and the whole brings it to another level, it works and then it doesn't the magic was turning sour, the situation can not continue, to you kill what you love or excise part of what defines you, betraying and firing a friend, angering your entire fan base! these things drive you towards suicide. This song is NOT played often, it is a reminder or a bad time, and through this performance band members that lived through this, are checking up on Tuomas, a lot of the fan base, especially the ones that were disappointed and angry at this situation have adopted this pain as well I think, as we applied the pressure in the backlash at we drove something we loved to this point, the blame is on us as well.

This is an on stage suicide by Tuomas to help him put the pain behind , Note the part "I have but 3 min" exactly 3 min is when he kills himself. the last part (Mother & Father) are words said to him by his parents then at the very end Emppu & Marco stand next to him to for support.

To understand the story you need to know the backstory.
Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now.
The birds flying by on the screen, ravens. Which is Poes most famous poem, The Raven. Nothing is by accident.

Missing the chances to see them perform live on tour, and now possibly missing the chance to see them with Marco.
But yet the happiness of finding the music of this band.

Fun fact. Tarja was fired in 2005, Anette came not earlier than in 2007, (I believe 2000 singers applied for the job, one of them was Elize Ryd (Kamelot). Her demo is on YT, can't remember what Nightwish song it was. Edit: Elize Ryd - "Nemo" (audition for Nightwish singer 2006).
Several commentators on that video are asking why didn't they hire her. Maybe she was too young?) and Nightwish was without a female vocalist, so Marko sang the demo of the Poet and the Pendulum alone, the whole thing, male and female parts. He is a great singer but that was not easy as you can imagine. The demo is on YT.
When Nightwish was touring the US Anette got sick, could not perform, but Elize and Alyssa White-Gluz were there, so Nightwish asked the audience if they wanted their money back and to go home or if they'd rather see a makeshift Nightwish concert with these two ladies, whatever Nightwish songs they might be able to pull off reading the lyrics from paper while singing. They had one hour to prepare with the help from Nightwish. (Denver Debacle, on YT.) The decision of the crowd was unanimous.
If you are interested there is a 2h documentary "Please Learn the Setlist In 48 hours" about how Floor came to be the 3rd and current Nightwish vocalist. Believe it or not some reactors have reacted to that documentary. The latest reaction I saw was cut into three parts. Some have made it a live stream chat reaction.

To the inevitable comments saying he should have researched the song or waited to react to this: sod off. No music requires research to be done prior to listening. Sure sometimes the underlying meaning and subject matter may be lost on someone on a first listen, but that’s what is amazing about great music, it’s like an onion. There are layers you can peel back on each listen and get something new from it every time.

Gabriel never 'commands' anyone to follow his list but advises new listeners to first look into their 'regular' songs (which are without exception amazing by themselves) before going into their 'big ones' Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth. First get a feel for the band and its history so you'll appreceate those two masterpieces even more. Not everyone is as an experienced musician as you are, Ryan, and believe me for most noobs his recommendations are a perfect way to get them invested in the band. Obviously you have met and will meet fans being fans (in the wrong way) who think their opinion is law and are extremely harsh in their reactions. Please believe me that the vast majority of the Nightwish Army rejects such behaviour.

At the beginning you put a thick schnitzel on your plate my friend 😁.
This is nothing less than a masterpiece by Tuomas.
And also for us fans one of the most important and most emotional songs. To understand the song you should know the history of the band. This is really extremely hot and many reactors have burned their fingers on it and gambled away a lot of benevolence. You had no idea, but you showed genuine interest, enthusiasm and appreciation and an attempt at interpretation. I think that's worth a lot if you don't know a lot about the band yet. 👍

No matter how many times I hear it, The Pacific grabs me deep and brings the tears. How can such beautiful lyrics, vocals, and instrumentals be a genuine plea to have the pain of emotional turmoil literally drowned away? It's gorgeous, horrible, terrible, heavenly, and deeply sad; all at once.

This emotional song is 14 min long. But… their longest song is The Greatest Show On Earth, it’s 21 minutes long. An absolute masterpiece. One of my favourites, together with the songs “Pan” and “7 Days To The Wolves”. Nightwish at their best for me. Thanks for this reaction. I saw in the comments you got the back story of this song already. Read the lyrics again with that back story in mind. The first 4 parts are written from Tuomas’s view on things, the last part from his parents’ point of view. If that will clarify all of this a bit more. Thanks.

Floor is an empath, she feels the lyrics and songs deeply and has the rare gift of portraying those emotions very clearly in her voice as she sings, and thereby she makes us feel the same. She has made many grown men (and women) cry, she commands the onion ninja army lol.
also, don't listen to all the "you should have done research first!"-people. listening to this blindly and with known backstory are 2 different experiences, and you can only do the totally blind one once. now you get to read up on the backstory, maybe watch some other reactors do a deep dive into the lyrics and explain everything for you, and then you get a brand new experience when you get the full blown impact of the song. you do you, there will always be ppl who feel like all reactions should follow specific patterns that they themselves enjoy the most. but if everyone did the same thing, it would get boring quickly ;)

ha, yeah Floor reaches into your heart cause she sings with such passion to the song. You didn't do too bad going in cold, most of the time this is the only one everybody suggests to do research on cause it's so personal, even Tuomas they say told the sound man to turn off his earpiece cause he didn't want to hear the lyrics, and to see how deeply it affected him try "Master Passion Greed" which some say is aimed at Tarja's husband whom some thought caused it all, the lyrics are a little harsh but that was a long time ago and there is no live performance, Tuomas said he's never do it live cause he's not that guy, but they do know how to put on a performance and elicit feelings though.

Indeed this song is inspired by the Pit And The Pendulum by E.A. Poe. It was written in the aftermath of firing Tarja (the first singer in the band)
Since the entire (original) band came from the same tiny town in Finland the band members knew each other from kindergarden. Also Tarja was popular like royalty in Finland. Tuomas got a lot of negative shit from the press and fans when he fired her. This combination sent Tuomas into depression. He said in an interview: "I committed suicide in the The Poet And The Pendulum so I did not have to do it in real live". The writing of the song worked "cathartic ", but playing the song hurts. The vocals are removed from his in-ear monitor, during this song.
Floor has an ability (and maybe a problem) that she picks up on peoples emotions and shares in the emotion. So therefore she had no problem to exactly catch Tuomas' emotion.
There are lots of interpretations out there of what the parts of the song mean, but I stick to this:
The acts represent the fases in the mind of a suicidal person.
Act I. White Lands Of Empathica --> this is about the traumatic loss of innocence.
Act II. Home --> this part is about raging thoughts of self hatred and a feeling of being uprooted (longing for home even if you already are home)
Act III. The Pacific --> this part is about romanticising death. How beautiful and peaceful it could be if you would just be dead.
Act iV. Dark Passion Play --> this part is about raging thoughts of anticipation about actually committing suicide and what will happen after
Act V. Mother and Father --> this part is about getting help and finding peace (without committing suicide)
    (Credits to Jim Games Live)

I am not sure what is more impressive, the impact this song has on first time listeners with no background knowledge going in or the immense appreciation for every story telling nuance once the listener hears everything led to the song. The fact that both scenarios are so potent speaks volumes. I have hear this song hundreds of times now and swear I still hear new elements. And the emotional impact never waivers. The boy soprano at the start was Guy Elliott from St Mary's Reigate Choir School. Poe has a lot to do with the title!. The other deep song, important to Tuomas, is "Dead Boys Poem".. To think he had written what is basically his own eulogy before TPATP..... An Ocean Soul.

  • @572Btriode
    @572Btriode 3 роки тому +3

I thought we'd been here before Ryan, Tuomas uses boy, (he says he's a man with a boy's heart), poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul as a direct reference to himself, here and elsewhere you have narration by a boy, it's Tuomas speaking directly to you. The title then carries a strong clue.
Floor and Kai, who couldn't leave his drum kit anyway, were not involved in the furore about Tarja's dismissal, however, you have seen Emppu and Marko stand in support of Tuomas as this is obviously difficult for him personally; what I don't think you have seen yet is the very up-beat song before this in the set carried the chorus line "conquering the darkest places" which in the final iteration, Floor went and stood on Tuomas' podium and sang that line directly to him; to my mind in support of what she knew was coming next.
You did a grand job, your commentators have filled in all the gaps I think and given comprehensive insights to the back-story.

@@RyanMear Ignore anyone who tries to tell you what you "must" do, or that you're reacting to songs in the "wrong" order. There's a small but noisy element that wants everyone to have the same experience. I love it when reactors see a title that just catches their unique personal interest, and does something different. It might even be fun to try a song off of the most recent album (Human Nature) even though there are no live shows for it yet--just to see a bit of "then and now" evolution of the band's sound.

Ryan, your unscripted rant at the end of act 3, was epic. Good job

Poe's Pit and the Pendulum is the inspiration for the title.

The Godess of metal has claimed another soul, she has the voice of a mythical siren, said to have lured many ships onto the rocks, Floor reaches into long forgotten emotions and stirs them up again, she doesnt just sing the song she brings it to life .
