Atreyu is the vessel through which Bastian is brought into the Neverending story, just as Bastion is your vessel to it, and now you are ours. The more layers of reaction through which this movie is seen, the trippier the true depth and complexity of this story becomes. It was made to reach the second layer of the person watching the movie, but through reaction channels, another unintended layer was added that the moviemakers could never have foreseen.

I loved seeing their reaction to the notion that Bastion was with Atrayu throughout the entire story, just as others were with him as he ran from the bullies and took refuge in the book store. Because I think that it sort of clicked with them that there were others watching them, as they watched the movie, as Bastion read the story of Atrayu's adventures, adding to The Never Ending Story.
Great reaction to a true classic. A deeper meaning a lot of people miss is that Fantasia is the world of human imagination so it has no boundaries. All of the creatures and places are from someone's imagination. The "nothing" is when humans start to lose that childhood hope and dreams. They quit imagining fantastical stories because they have to "grow up" and "face reality". The true message of the story is always keep imagining and dreaming you can find a world of beauty in a single petal of a flower. The song is one of my favorites too. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
The actress that plays the Empress is Tammi Stronach. This was her ONLY movie until this year. 40 years later. She has a new movie coming out next month called “Man and Witch: The dance of 1000 steps”
You're exactly right. I saw this as a very young boy and it has completely stuck with me my whole life. Im 43, and any time I come across this movie, everything stops, and I have to watch it and it always gets me in the feels. I... hope I didn't say that out loud just now.
Yes, that is Deep Roy, who played an Oompa Loompa in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's been around a long time and has been part of some amazing projects.
Deep Roy played all of the Oompa Loompas in that movie, except for the bunch of miniature animatronics that were used in the wide shots and some CG ones. All the close up stuff was Deep Roy acting it out multiple times for each position and they used green screen to be able to make the different shots overlap eachother.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was 5 years old. It's so great. It's one of those movies that grows with you. Every time you return to it at a different stage in your life, it gives you something different.
Noah Hathaway, who plays Atreyu, in fact, did not have much fun filming this movie as he was severely injured a few times during the process. Early in filming, he was thrown off the horse and fractured a couple of vertebrae. He had to be hospitalized for two months and suffers from backpain to this day. During his fight scene with Gmork, the wolf creature, one of the animatronic animal's claws gouged him in the eye, nearly blinding him. He stated, "It was the weirdest experience of my life."
This was one of the go to movies when my cousins came for a sleepover - "The neverending story", "The last unicorn" and, to make the list totally nonsensical, "Poltergeist" :D Been born in 1984, this movie will always bring back great memories of a happy childhood :)
The movie is only half the book. The rest of the book is Bastians wishes and how they influence him. It's a very good book. It can be read like a basic fantasy story but it has a lot of layers about our life and existence that can be analysed upon. I recommend you give it a try. But that's another story...
Every story Bastian finishes spawns three others-and he can’t go back home until he finishes them all. Which is impossible because he can’t stop spawning side quests. This is why the story is Neverending. So SPOILER ALERT Atreyu volunteers to stay behind and finish them all for Bastian so he can go home.
HI ladies. Great reaction. I saw this movie when it came out, I was 10 years old when it was released. I'm not surprised that you recognize the theme song, they used to play it on the radio many years ago. I hope that more reactors watch this old jem, it's fun to see the next generation see these good old films. Take care
The movie was shot in Germany and some of the characters we see at the start are actually speaking German and their voices were dubbed in english for the movies release. Everyone else speaks english other than a few of the characters
12:25 The scene of Artax dying hits harder for me due to remembering how a girl named Jenny in my 1st grade class in 86 or 87 reacted. She grew up on a farm with a lot of horses and had a major soft spot for them. (Damn I'm already choking up) Anyway, her reaction was heartbreaking, she slid down into her chair and fell over to the floor, sobbing very hard and unresponsive/inconsolable. The teacher had to briefly stop the movie, and she was so devatated that her parents came to pick her up. -- I'm currently 43 and the memory of that cuts deeper, the older I got the more I could understand and empathize with her heart being crushed by the scene. -- She eventually learned the horse didn't actually die in real life and the fictional horse character was revived, and all that. But even other classmates had recently said that Jenny's reaction haunts them when this scene plays. (shaking my head) Well I gotta hand it to the filmakers and Noah Hathaway, speaking at least for myself, its a powerful scene that hits every time.
Saw this as a kid and spent years afterwards looking for the book. I did eventually find it at the library and actually have a copy of my own now. Definitely in my Top Ten All Time Favorite Movies.
To explain the opening scene with the orange juice and egg. that was an old hangover cure. Basically the scene is telling us that after the mom died, dad crawled into the bottle. The whole set up is Bastian feeling alone.
Huh? Orange juice, milk, egg and crushed ice is the ingredients to an Orange Julius. I don't think that drink shop still exists anymore, but we used to make them at home, too.
Even though I was born in 1999, The Neverending Story was a childhood film of mine. I felt such nostalgia from this thank you! The theme song by the way is from a band called Kajagoogoo 🥰🥰🥰
I loved and was scared (and scarred by the horse scene) when this movie came out; but it was years before I knew what he yelled for his mom's name. I watched it a ton of times and could never make out what he was saying until someone else told me what it was. : p
Ladies, I am glad you had the chance to check this one out! My childhood was full of NES references. NES was not just Nintendo Entertainment System, but of course the Never Ending story. Check out Legend if you'd like another fantasy film from the same period! Your reactions to Artax and Falcor were beautiful and I was happy to laugh and cry alongside you 2 during this nostalgic journey! A couple of things I wanna tell ya in case you didn't know. 1) Atreyu's name was used for a band name and the age group of fans were largely unaware of the name origin. 2) The name Bastian shouts was his mother's name, but the storm is so loud during that moment it's hard to tell what it is. The name is Moonchild. So yeah, I need a luck dragon or racing snail too! Lol
This movie traumatised my entire generation 😂 Another movie that traumatised my generation was Watership Down. It's an animated movie about rabbits. Add it to the list 👍
Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) became a tattoo artist, and has said that the tattoo he's been asked for the most is the Orin (sp?). I can't remember the actor's name, but Bastian was also in Cocoon 1&2 (as well as others). And, I would definitely recommend watching the movies you asked about (or your editor did), although I can't remember what those titles were, right now. 🙄
Great reaction fun to watch 👍I was younger than the Atreyu actor when I first saw this by myself at night in the dark home alone it was an adventure. I wanted to be just like Atreyu
Great Reaction! I'd like to recommend the book that this movie is based on, The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It's an amazing read, and way, WAY deeper than what they managed with this movie. The movie also only adapts the first half of the book, and the second covers Bastians adventures within Fantasia itself. I love the book, and recommend it to everyone, especially adults due to the deeper themes of the story that kids doesn't nessecerily pick up on.
This movie and back to the future were recorded on the same VHS tape at a family members house recorded from HBO and I watched them every time I went to there house some of my favorite memories and favorite movies.
I'm so happy you two watched this for the first time. Toy, you were correct about that actor playing the Oompa Loompa from Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. So good eye and good eyes. Abby, it's funny you mentioned Stranger Things in the beginning because I'll bet that's where you heard the song from in season 3 when Dustin and Suzy are singing it together through the walkie talkies. Great review and reactions. Keep up the videos, long time lover of the channel.
I saw this when it came out. It always makes me cry, and no one who cries at this movie is crying for no reason, they are crying because it is such an amazing story, an amazing movie... you should read the book.
I saw this when it was new in the theaters. I loved it. For a lot of the kids of my age at the time, the death of Artex the horse was so traumatic and for many it was our first experience with loss.
If you two are interested in watching The Dark Crystal movie (if you haven't already), I also higly recommend the Netflix series produced by Jim Henson's daughter, The Dark Crystal : Age of Resistance. It's very well done and highly underrated in my opinion. It only has one season, but it really deserves more spotlight than Netflix allowed for it.
Great reaction ladies, to one of the most meta movies ever made. 😀 I saw it first on videotape once it hit the video stores, probably in my junior year of high school, 1985. I loved the interconnected stories, and as an equestrian the death of Artax in the Swamps of Sadness (a place I knew all too well in the real world) destroyed me for a little while, so you weren't alone in that reaction, Toy. Falcor was my favorite creature in the movie, as he was almost everyone's. The animatronics were so freaking well done! A friend of mine who is a few years younger than me had made her own Falcor pillow as a teen, designing and sewing it herself. She was an amazing craftswoman even at 14, and it really looked like it was movie merch. She was just frustrated that she couldn't find a way to give it eyelids that could be opened and closed repeatedly, so she had him winking. 😀 She also lived on a farm and owned a horse. Want to guess what the horse was named? Yup, it was Artax. 😀 So while this movie wasn't a huge deal in the theaters, it took on quite the life of its own once it made it to video. My crafty friend and I would hang out and watch a lot of fantasy movies during the summers when we were in high school. This one from 1984, Ladyhawke and Legend from 1985, and then Labyrinth from 1986. 😀 All are well worth a watch!
It was such a cool plot twist and fourth wall break the way they refer to us, the viewers of the movie, as part of the storyline and plot. There is an RPG video game that does something similar on the Nintendo DS. I can't say which one for it would be a spoiler but iykyk.
When I was a kid I thought The Nothing was people moving away from reading and not using their imagination anymore, which destroyed the land of myth and fantasy (Fantasia). As an adult I realised this movie is about grief and depression. Once Bastian experiences and works through the fazes of grief, and comes to terms with his mother's loss, he gifts the Empress her name (Moonchild). Then he brings back joy and happiness and lives his life to tge fullest.
Y'all all dress cute, but outside of Phillies, and Eagles gear. Abby now has the coolest shirt I've seen on this channel.. very nice. I seen this in theaters when I was little. Fun flick that I haven't seen in decades. Thanx for the reminder. Very well done ladies, and cool producer guy
I love The NeverEnding Story. I use to put this film on after watching Electric Dreams (1984). I enjoy the soundtrack from both films too. Watching you both react to this film put a smile on my face.
The song Never ending story was a big hit in many places written by Giorgio Moroder (who also co- wrote I feel love with Pete Bellote and Donna Summer).
Lol 10:34 when you laughed at the horse calling it kinda lame as all the other creatures had been magical or fantastical ...up to that point and I thought " you ain't never gonna forget that horse in a few minutes time ! Lol scars
Yes to a lot of classic fantasy movies. Here is a short list as there are so many I've missed: The Dark Crystal Labyrinth Willow Legend Ladyhawke Clash of the Titans Jason and the Argonauts The 7th Voyage of Sinbad The Golden Voyage of Sinbad Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger Excalibur Time Bandits Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory The Wizard of Oz The Adventures of Baron Munchausen Mary Poppins
While I'm not too big on them remaking films from my childhood, this is one that I hope gets that Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings treatment, especially realizing that this film didn't even really do justice to the source material. Wouldn't mind the same treatment (and live action style) for the Last Unicorn as well.
There's several good movies by Wolfgang Petersen that you ladies need to watch on the channel with Boo.... Troy The Perfect Storm Air Force One In The Line of Fire Das Boot
@@RuntotheMovies no problem!., i dont know why theatres dont promote their retro movies, or play more retro stuff in general. (given the state of the theatre industry) you have to go to the movies in the first place to even know about it.
He used to be more like her, but pulled away from that side of himself, as his own way of dealing with the grief (which is really more like avoiding it). Obviously, he’s not a bad guy, and is trying to be a good, responsible father for Bastian, but the way he goes about it distances him from his son.
When my sister and I were kids, she was obsessed with this movie, and because of that, I hated it. But now, as an adult who struggles with severe depression and struggled with nihilism and apathy, it hits different. But I can't help but think, if Sebastian could wish for anything, and he was so deeply affected by his mother's absence, that it was odd his first wish wasn't to bring her back.
It would have been too painful, because eventually he had to leave Fantasia. The luckdragon buzzing the bullies didn’t happen in the real world, only in Fantasia. If he’d manifested his mother, he’d have never left, and his dead body would eventually be found in the school attic after a few weeks when it began to rot. They didn’t want a downer ending at the moment of triumph. Even without the Real Life Ensues ending, a bittersweet scene with his mother would not have caused him to live happily ever after, and that is the proper ending to a child’s fairytale.
I saw this movie when I was a kid, and when Artax when down in the Swamp of Sadness- I was in tears for a while... I was about 5... even still gets me. Try watching The Dark Crystal. (unless you already have.) 🐾🦊🐾 the one that's worse? was the rock biter 😿oh god that one still gets me so hard.
The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth? I think this is the ti,e to say "why not both?". This film along with both of those form the Holy Trinity of 80s children's fantasy.
Labyrinth is a good one, as is another movie called Krull! Ah Toy was a famous woman who lived in the 1800s in San Francisco. She was a prostitute in China, and on the way here, she seduced the Captain of the ship, and he fell in love with her, and gave her lots of money. She opened a brothel in San Francisco and become the richest woman in California. She went back to China for another decade, and then she came back to the USA and lived out the rest of her years in San Jose (also known as "Silicon Valley"). There's a TV series called Warrior that's based on the writings of Bruce Lee, produced by his daughter, and in the show there is a character based on Ah Toy. In the series she knows Kung Fu, no word on whether she knew Kung Fu in real life. 🙂 The TV series is really good, highly recommended. 🙂 Both women looked very beautiful in this video 🙂

The death of Artax, was so heartbreaking for us kids in the 80's and 90's. I loved this movie so much.
still not over decades later
just another 80's kids movie. This would be rated R for todays youth lol
He came back once the kingdom was saved
Me too
@EVERYDAYGames00 exactly so I never got too traumatized lol

the horse death traumatized so many children, so so so many
Yep...First time I cried was to that...
Artex dying in the Swamp of Sadness and the Judge killing the shoe in the dip
Including me. I can’t do it because I know it’s coming.
And to think the horse was trained to do that. No CGI there. 😳
I hid in the kitchen whenever that scene was on
Yes, that is Deep Roy, who played an Oompa Loompa in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's been around a long time and has been part of some amazing projects.
That was a very good catch by her!!!!
He was also the evil villain Mr. Sin from "Doctor Who" in the episode "The Talons of Weng-Chiang".
“an” Oompa-Loompa 😂
He played the entire species
Deep Roy played all of the Oompa Loompas in that movie, except for the bunch of miniature animatronics that were used in the wide shots and some CG ones. The Swamps of Sadness scene is probably the best depiction of depression and someone's desperate struggle to save someone from it.

Yes, The Dark Crystal! First saw it as a child and it will forever live in my ♥️
Im 44, This was my favorite movie as a child. It was dark, deep, and motivational.
If you slow the playback down, you can actually see the moment Toy's soul is ripped from her body when Artax dies.
The movie was shot in Germany and some of the characters we see at the start are actually speaking German and their voices were dubbed in english for the movies release. Everyone else speaks english other than a few of the characters
Thousands of people watched you watch Bastian as he watched Atreyu

Want to guess what the horse was named? Yup, it was Artax. 😀
So while this movie wasn't a huge deal in the theaters, it took on quite the life of its own once it made it to video. My crafty friend and I would hang out and watch a lot of fantasy movies during the summers when we were in high school. This one from 1984, Ladyhawke and Legend from 1985, and then Labyrinth from 1986. 😀 All are well worth a watch!
Thank you so much for sharing this piece of your past. ❤️
My all time fav book and movie.
I saw it in theaters when I was a kid.
You guys were fun to re-experience this with. ☺️
Edit; PLEASE watch the newly made series of The Dark Crystal. So beautifully done, so well written.
Thanks so much for watching with us!
"I've gotta keep my feet on the ground!"
Yes, I have seen The Pagemaster and I loved it!
"It's Stranger Things adjacent!"
One Minute later:
"Where have I heard that song before???" 😁
This movie is a classic. Great story, characters, music xx
A friend of mine named her son Atreyu after the character in this movie.
Y'all all dress cute, but outside of Phillies, and Eagles gear. Abby now has the coolest shirt I've seen on this channel.. very nice. I seen this in theaters when I was little. Fun flick that I haven't seen in decades. Thanx for the reminder. Very well done ladies, and cool producer guy
thank you!!!!
I love The NeverEnding Story. I use to put this film on after watching Electric Dreams (1984). I enjoy the soundtrack from both films too. Watching you both react to this film put a smile on my face.
I remember watching this movie as a kid 😃 one of my favorites another great reaction with Toy & Abby 🙌🏽💙 and adorable Boo 🐈
The song Never ending story was a big hit in many places written by Giorgio Moroder (who also co- wrote I feel love with Pete Bellote and Donna Summer).
I've seen "The Pagemaster", it was one of the greatest family movies I've ever seen growing up. Just like "The Never Ending Story".
Abby's face full of wonder. ...and love shades 😎
Lol 10:34 when you laughed at the horse calling it kinda lame as all the other creatures had been magical or fantastical ...up to that point and I thought " you ain't never gonna forget that horse in a few minutes time ! Lol scars
Yes to a lot of classic fantasy movies. Here is a short list as there are so many I've missed:

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger
Excalibur

I think you would like The Labyrinth with David Bowie. The Dark Krystal is also good.
12:40 Hello trauma my old friend... lol
😿
the Artax scene its stuck i every kids head from that time, then the Strong hands part also makes you feel things
City scenes are filmed in Vancouver BC, my hometown. I miss that place.
I adore Toy! Such a crush!
There's several good movies by Wolfgang Petersen that you ladies need to watch on the channel with Boo....
Troy
The Perfect Storm
Air Force One
In The Line of Fire
Das Boot
Great reaction Ladies I ain’t seen this in ages 👏👏👏
We also recorded Abby's reaction to Flight of the Navigator a little while before this. It's going to be coming up soon, as well. 😸
The tabby needs to make more appearances. Gorgeous kitty.
She's the star of our show!
There are more movies, but nothing beats the classic! You should still check hem out, though, kinda fun!
Orange Julius Is Orange Juice With powdered eggs and confectioner sugar.
So you're watching him watch them and they know his name and I'm watching you watch them and you know my name, who's watching me....
Check your local theaters... It's not being promoted but a lot of theaters are playing this movie because of the 40 year anniversary summer 2024
Thanks for the tip! ❤️🍿
@@RuntotheMovies no problem!., i dont know why theatres dont promote their retro movies, or play more retro stuff in general. (given the state of the theatre industry) you have to go to the movies in the first place to even know about it.
Bastian's dad really married a woman named "Moonchild" and expects their child not to daydream and draw unicorns in his notebook.
He used to be more like her, but pulled away from that side of himself, as his own way of dealing with the grief (which is really more like avoiding it). Obviously, he’s not a bad guy, and is trying to be a good, responsible father for Bastian, but the way he goes about it distances him from his son.
@@0okamino so he's basically a representation of the nothing
The Never ending story theme song is in stranger things season 3. Dustin sings it to suzi
If you think my first paragraph was hideously inappropriate, let me remind you that this is a German fairytale.
Awwww ♥️👀 l remember this movie 🎥😁 it's the never ending story l love this awesome childhood movie love ❤️ u TOY l love ur reaction kisses 😘😘😘😘❤❤
Kisses 😘😘😘 my Toy
I saw this movie when I was a kid, and when Artax when down in the Swamp of Sadness- I was in tears for a while... I was about 5... even still gets me. Try watching The Dark Crystal. (unless you already have.) 🐾🦊🐾 the one that's worse? was the rock biter 😿oh god that one still gets me so hard.
yes pagemaster reaction whennnn
you guys are the best ....love you guys.....❤
12:45 imagine being an 8yr old kid watching this and seeing this horse die.
😭
I didn't see it at the theater but did watch it on VHS.
Toy is very tenderhearted. I hope she gets more nice, sweet movies to react to.
Benny & Joon! Benny & Joon!
Absolutely love this movie. I watched it last weekend with my grandson and he loved it as much as I did.😊
This movie movie was originally shot in German, the English dubbing is not accurately synced.
Both women looked very beautiful in this video 🙂
