Thanks for the video! I got a similar setup but my external mic does not work with the iphone. I captures always the internal. Lightning to HDMI adapter is Apple original. Any ideas what to do? Recording with Apple's camera software, nothing fancy.
Thanks for watching. The field monitor I’m using is FeelWorld. I noticed many people are using SmallRig field monitors and many other brands. What is important to me is if the field monitor is not too expensive 😊still does the job but it’s more on the budget.
Very nice video thanks for sharing 😊 I like your rig setups. A question. Can the feelworld monitor screen be connected to a mobile phone? I'm considering doing something like yours. So far your only channel is the only one that's given us good tips about the possibility of connecting the feelworld monitor to a mobile phone phone. Very well done tutorial Ma'am ❤
Hi I’m trying to figure out how to get my camera recording to shoot on my Field tracker monitor I have the same HDMI cords and Apple Jack as yours but I’m having a little trouble please get back to me.
great vid! just wondering are you able to record audio while using the field monitor? not the charger, just the microphone and the monitor? any reply would help out a lot :)
Thank you for watching. The one solution that I found and works is to get a external monitor that you can connect via Bluetooth to your iPhone + Lightning to 3.5mm adapter (to connect the mic to the iPhone) 👍
Good idea with the nato-rail. I finally ended up with replacing the top handle (and using it with the canon RP rig) with a SmallRig Mini Top Handle.

Thank you for watching. I decided to choose a smaller battery pack - so for sure it’s not in the way and the whole rig is better balanced. The top handle is useful but make sure you get the right one for your rig (I had to replace the regular size top handle to a mini-top-handle)
I’ve noticed that what helped (in my case) was to 1st open the FilmicPro and then connect the mic. Right away I see that the mic is connected and recognized by the FilmicPro
Stay groovy! love the video, I'm using the Ulanzi phone cage, it's very light. It is, however all plastic, but honestly it's so light it's a no problem carry as far as weight goes.
That’s the advantage of the Ulanzi phone cage - it’s lightweight. You just have to be more careful. I have Ulanzi smartphone cage and it works just great, but on the longer outdoor projects I’d rather to take the SmallRig - just in case
Are you still happy with the rig after 6 months? Do you figure you need the second handle or would it ok just to use the cage to stabilize the left side considering you have a very good handhold on the right❓ Is the top handle still working fine or would you have preferred the smaller (recommended) top handle❓
Thanks for stopping by. After few months follow up: absolutely recommend using both side handles for better stabilization. I replaced the top handle for the smaller (recommended) one - the big one (way more comfortable) I had to tighten up to the cage every time and the smaller (recommend) handle fits better.
That setup looks sturdy and I’m sure gives you quite the workout. HDMI cables are hot sellers in all lengths due to situations like your cage. Thanks for sharing. I wish you the best with your channel.
I have this exact same monitor. I only use it once and then it died on me. It would just go black after a few seconds. Both with fully charged batteries and power supply. I did notice a bit of lag/stutter when panning to quickly.
Thank you for watching. The two options I stumbled across: 1st (I tested): Using other smartphone as a field monitor that you connect via Bluetooth. That will give you the option to connect (via wire) mic to your mail smartphone you use to record. The only thing I’ve noticed doing that is a little bit delay between two smartphones. I use the FilmicPro Remote app to connect both smartphones. 2nd option (haven’t tested that yet): connect (via hdmi wire) field monitor + connect mic (via Bluetooth)
Like you, I love my Smallrig universal cage. I do have one problem with it though. While Smallrig makes lens mounts for cages designed for specific iPhones, it doesn't make one for the universal. Yes, It'd need to more flexible to adjust the placement for different phones. But Smallrig has smart designers. They could come up with a good design. Do that and the universal really would be universal.
I am a freelance videographer with Stringr. Although, I got expensive cameras now. I started with Samsung galaxy note phones. This is the rig I wish I had access to back then.
Did you ever figured out how to connect this monitor and mic through one entry point to the iphone. I am struggling with this. What was your final solution?
@@RidersUnited I ended up with two options: 1. If I don’t need audio - then I just keep my monitor and power connected to the iPhone 2. If I need audio - then I use another iPhone as a monitor and connect it via Filmic app (Filmic Remote). There a small lag but not as bad that you can’t use it (unless you record sport, etc.). And then I can easily connect the mic. 3. You might try to get the wireless mic and connect it to the smartphone and then you can still connect the external monitor.
Use a wireless charger in this case also buy a roku stick and connect to monitor after that screen mirror from iPhone to roku and connect microphone directly to iPhone this is the best scenario
what a useful video, thank you. I am a newbie and wonder if I can mount my iPad mini instead of buying a field monitor. I haven't seen anyone do that so not sure what extra part I would need to buy. Do you have ideas?
Sometimes I use an iPhone as files monitor, it’s connected via Bluetooth. To do that I use the FilmicPro Remote app to connect both. One thing to remember is that there’s a delay between those two.
@@GroovyTakeON but I need to selfie myself so aiming to use tripod, cage, remote control and IPad to make sure am in right angle. Is that not doable? Your answer answers another question I think ❤️
@@froufou100 you can use the iPad/iPad mini 👍no problem as a field monitor. For that I just use that FilmicPro remote app to connect the iPhone with the iPad mini. I use iPad as well as a field monitor as well. Works good. Maybe not the most comfortable if you want to walk around and record (just because of the size) but if you just set it up in one place 👍
@@froufou100 iPhone (as a camera) is attached to that mount in the middle of the cage. iPad mini I would try and see if it’s stable enough to mount on the top (to the top handle - please make sure to get the recommended smaller handle than the one I have shown in this video. It just mean the smaller top handle will fit better). If it’s too top-heavy then place the iPad mini somewhere on the side (away from the cage if necessary), it’s connected via Bluetooth so no worries there.
Hi. Thanks for watching. The phone’s screen will stay on while phone is connected to that external monitor but when you lock the phone’s screen - the monitor is not projecting neither.
I am trying to do roughly the same setup. I purchased the Feelworld 5.5in DSLR camera field monitor, and I have the Lightning to HDMI adaptor + HDMI to HDMI cable all connected to each other, but the monitor isn't receiving any signal. My best guess is it's the Lightning to HDMI adaptor. Are you using an official Apple one or one from Amazon? I can't tell the difference, but something isn't working right.
I’m using the Apple (official) adapter. Just in case (before you start buying another adapter) did you try to check to connect the cable to HDMI IN or HDMI OUT (on the Feelworld monitor)?
