Indeed, there are so many DIY about this. In my country I found it for €630 for just a few mechanical parts and a heating element? You still need to hook up your own vacuum.
@PhreshFunk Hello, yes they are! It's easy to repair if anything does happen to go wrong and we are able to provide parts. The FormBox Starter Kit also comes with a 2 year warranty and access to our support team, we'd be delighted to help you grow your business. A lot of our customers are small-medium craft or handmade businesses working from small studios or homes. If you'd like to learn more send us an email to hello@mayku.me or visit our website www.mayku.me
Hi Kimberley, you can use almost any vacuum cleaner that's under 2000 watts and has a hose and manual on/off switch. Works with most household vacs as well as Workshop style vacs too. If you have any further questions you can get in touch here: www.mayku.me/pages/ask-a-question
Hi Javier, all the sheets are recyclable with your normal recycling when you have finished with them, although you can get many uses out of one sheet. The sheets are also made of a percentage of recycled plastics. We are developing full compostable options as we work towards a sustainable future.
@@TeamMayku As you may know, most of those plastic leftovers that are not labeled as packaging and are through to recicle will never be recicled and will remain in landfills to be burned. However I am glad to hear that you are working towards a greener future!
We recommend not making something taller than it is wide, although you can experiment with two part molds to achieve different shapes and sizes. We have some articles on our site that explain more: www.mayku.me/blogs/news/how-to-design-for-vacuum-forming-and-mold-making-with-agustin-arroyo
You might have to build that template in sections. I think what might happen is that, the longer the stretch, the more susceptible the heated material will be to breaking at, or near the top of the design, since most of the pressure will be at that point. Sort of like trying to stretch a balloon over a sharp, narrow object. So yeah... there's a good reason for that rule of thumb.
We're working on creating more eco-friendly sheets, but makers are more than welcome to source their own if they can, we just can't guarantee you'll get perfect results on materials we've not tested. Our sheets are recyclable and reusable, so you could get hundreds of uses out of each mold before it's no longer working optimally. 😊
Any expierences from someone here to elaboratE? it looks like what this can do i can also achieve with a heated paint gun and vacuum? Can it draw porous materials also? anyone tried multiple plies/layers how did that work?
Yes it can do. If you're vacuum forming it's best not to overheat your sheets as it can cause problems with the finish and accuracy of your shape. You can start forming as soon as you see the sheet start to bend.
Hi Kevin, all of our current Sheets are food safe. A lot of our chocolatiers prefer the clear ones, you might like the new 1mm Clear Sheet as it's more rigid making it closer to a polycarbonate texture. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Just got an add for this and was like “oh that’s really cool!” Then saw the price.... i could make my own vacuform with a plastic box and a cheap vacuum cleaner with the added benefit of having a vacuum cleaner! Old tech for a lot of money... thanks but I’ll pass and use the cheap, dirty but just as effective method.
Fair enough, thank you for your feedback, we are sorry you feel that way. Yes you could build your own at home, however, the Formbox is fully safety certified and comes with a starter kit of 40 sheets, 1kg of casting material and 3 templates to start creating straight out of the box. It has a unique sheet clamping mechanism, an automatic hoover switch and socket that controls any vacuum cleaner plugged in, automatically. It also has a 1000W custom ceramic heater and the built in timer and temperature dial allows accuracy and precision in forms. You will also get unlimited access to a library of projects, support from Master Makers at Mayku and a comprehensive 2 year warranty.
Mayku don’t get me wrong, I still think it’s cool and would love to have one, but for me it isn’t practical enough to warrant the cost, I like making miniatures but I’m also on a tight budget. The ad got me really excited but the price was a bit of a shock😣
Yeah, I'm with you on that. For what they consist of, I've never understood why all vacuum forming machines are so expensive. I can only guess it's a supply and demand sort of thing. You've basically got a toaster oven with a platen for around $700. I do the same thing with a $90 toaster oven and home made frame and platen box.

Hi Billy, thanks for the comment. A lot of work went into the design of the FormBox to make it safe, practical and easy to use. Every FormBox also comes with enough Sheets to make up to 40 custom molds, 1 kg of casting material, 3 sample models to get you making immediately, excellent technical support and a online global community to help you on your maker journey, all that PLUS a 2 year warranty.
So, you want $820 for something that can be constructed from materials that would barely cost 10$ overall? Just some wood box for decoration, a couple of screws and a couple of sheets of plywood Drill holes in it, glue it together, and you are done. That's all you'll need. All that _can_ be costly in this is just the heating element. And you don't need it, since your oven can heat to greater temperatures that's necessary for any formable plastic.
Noyt if you want to use it for your small business. Who wants to have to keep warming sheets of plastic up in the over? I'd never get anything done if i had to do that.
