When my brother was 6 he went out on the back deck, tied a rope around his belly and then to the deck and jumped off trying to swing like spiderman. The rope slipped up around his neck with his arms caught above him. If my mom had not been coming around the back of the house at that very moment he would have hung himself. But even at that young of an age he knew you at least needed something to hang on to. It is so heart wrenching that this little boy lost his life because of the fact he loved the comic book hero so much. I think that in that way it touches me more because he wasn't being "Stupid" like most of the older people on this list, he was just being loving.

The "Back to the Future" reference didn't go the way that I wished it had. I'd rather the narrator have said, "A group of teens built a time machine, traveled back 34 years, but forgot to build a time and _space_ machine. As a result, the teens went back in time, only to find that the planet was hundreds of thousands of miles away, and the died, floating in space."
In their defense, the Back-to-the-Future movie didn't say not to try it at home.

Like, "I can totally get my ball and jump back over the fence before that big ass dog comes out from the backyard" is considered a person's last words. Not the following, "OH FUCK! FUUUUUCK! OH GOD THAT HURTS!! AAAHHHHHH!!! What are you doing just standing there!?! Help me get this thing off my leg!! Hurry u- OH SHIIIIIT! IT'S TEETH ARE HITTING MY BONES!! PLEASE! *PLEEEEEEEAAASSE!!! It would be like surviving your own secret rite of passage -- and you'd feel superior to those who act like they are brave for doing something like riding a roller coaster, and equal, in a way, to those that our society holds up as heroes worthy of honor. Only two of these were inspired by the movies. Fast did't invent drag racing. It didn't even make its first appearance in Lucas's 1973 American Graffiti. Drag racing has been a huge part of the American underground for years and years. A child climbs out of his window to go some place he was forbidden to go. That's never been done before Spider Man right? Students hanging onto cars while riding a skateboard or sliding on ice? That stunt has many names. In my childhood it was called hooky bobbing. If children and young adults were really that stupid, none of them wold have ever lived beyond the 1st Road Runner cartoon. The bigger danger is the social media challenges. This is where children and young adults get to watch people from their own age group doing stupid things and survive. If they can do it, so can I.

Their poor decisions show that they don't really understand the facts about his death. Having worked for Santa Cruz Ambulance Company I can tell you that the railroad trestle that goes over the estuary in Portola (a small berg outside of Santa Cruz), was found by teen agers thinking they could 'recreate' the railroad scene from the movie. When I was working there for 4 years, each summer there was accidents at the scene of the 'drop'. If the estuary is full, the worst that happened were sprains to wrists, and arms. On year a Canadian visitor ended up with Cerebral 4-5 rupture because the estuary has tide fluctuations. Don't do it. Please.

Okay, so I shouldn't be bothered but I am. McCandless didn't eat the wrong plant. The book goes into the actual death. The plants he stored in plastic bags and the wet weather before caused condensation and a mold to grow in the bags. When he ate the plants, he ingested the mold and it caused his cells to be unable to perform cellular respiration, causing him to essentially starve to death no matter how much he ate.

I remember back in 1999 my Son's friend who was 9 years old, Daniel - he passed away holding on to his Uncle's truck doing that same stunt. It was a horrible tragedy and my Son Julien was only six years old. A few years later, when Julien turned 13 - he took his own life due to a nasty Cyber bulling incident... I remembered Daniel and I didn't know what to say to his Mother at the time - now I know, there's really nothing you CAN say, just be there if you need them... R. I. P. Julien and Daniel... 😢
