    Very interesting!
    The darker one reminds me of a fresh peach when you slice it open.

    I just had the same issue with my yarn. Now to go back and correct it. Thanks

    I wonder what would happen if you’d used hot/boiling water initially instead of cold. Or if you’d dissolved that dye powder in a tablespoon or two of water before adding to the roving (then proceeding the same as with the dry dye powder.) 🧐😊
    This fiber is absolutely beautiful. 😍

      I also think it would be worth it to see how more water would affect it.

    one point i really like about your videos is that you do voice overs and let your viewers in on what you are doing.

    Ooh, I like your new yarn storage backdrop! I'm catching up on videos, so I dunno how new that shelf arrangement is, but I really like it! Edit: Oooh! Spinning!! I can't wait for some spinning videos!!! I've really loved the previous spinning videos you've made in the past, they're such good companions to play while I'm working on my own creative projects!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      I'm bad about actually using the backdrop. Depending on where the kids are hanging out sometimes it is quieter to just do it down in my kitchen. :D The shelf is just an Ikea 5x5 cube shelf we got for storing yarn... and I overfilled it immediately!

    I have some Dharma Fire Engine Red and it does the same thing--clumps into globs of gel that take forever to dissolve/strike. Dharma says straining the powder will remove the "impurities" and make it work like it's supposed to. Your roving still turned out beautifully!!

    Sooo, when are you going to do more with Dylon hand dyes? ;) I know you hate the rinsing, but I have just bought a lot of dylon for my yarn and would love to see more ;) If it's possible to dye in different ways. Did try it on cotton with speckles and on a cotton/wool blend and I love it. I don't have the option to dye with acid dyes so I hope you would at least consider trying out more of the dylon dyes ;)

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      I don't have any dylon dye on hand at the moment and don't have plans in the near future... but I'm absolutely open to it someday! I have a few other dyes (jacquard idye and idye poly) that I'd like to play with before I'd cycle back to Dylon.

    Wonder what will happen if you do the same with Kool aid ?

    • @cindypierce6269
      @cindypierce6269 4 роки тому

      Kool Aid has citric acid so you would not get the acid no acid comparison, but you could try it with food coloring.

      I'm now not sure if I've done solar dyeing with KoolAid but I've done it with food coloring before

    Rebecca, I wonder if starting with a gel form of the colours might have been a better way to go as it would already have been dissolved where the powder form did not completely dissolve, as we have seen in other experiments where it also did not dissolve and the results being affected there.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      I think I just picked the wrong red to use. I forgot that this one jellies up a bit when concentrated. In general I've preferred the results form having dry powder, but I have to really make sure to break it up. I think mixing the powder with CA might help a lot next time.

    • @kathleenmcquade31
      @kathleenmcquade31 4 роки тому

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials The colours that you picked were beautiful when they did mix though! It would be good to see it work out the way you were hoping it would!
      Did you see the plans I sent you for a solar oven? Having a sound structure for doing solar dying would be great for someone who does a lot of dying that way, as well as doing some dehydrating of plants for the dying process: not to mention doing food in it!

    My question is why haven’t you tried putting it in the jar in a water bath situation not hot but just bring it up to a simmer and then turn it off and put the lid on and let it cool down naturally if you’ve never water bath canned you must completely cover the jar with water

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure why I haven't done this exactly. I have put open jars in a water bath but I don't bother putting lids on them for that.

    • @omaeve

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials It’s not a water bath unless the jars are completely covered over with water it’s not the same as a pressure cooker

    Great experiment to bad the red did not dissolve right.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      I think if I were going to try to replicate this I might want to mix the red with citric acid. Or maybe sugar/salt actually for a non-acid batch.
