  • In this week’s episode, I’m back metal detecting in the woods at an untouched 1700s site that I found a few months ago... although, I guess I shouldn’t say it’s “untouched” now that I’ve been there so many times. However, it was certainly a new discovery when I first began metal detecting this colonial cellar! Today is all about some of the most STUNNING old coins I have EVER found! The Minelab Manticore brought it home once again… you have to see it to believe it! Enjoy!

    Thanx for the info about the 1749 coppers from the Mermaid ... I always wondered about this because all 10 of my KG II farthings are 1749 and many of the halfpennies are 1749 also. Someone from the metal detector club said a shipment of coppers came into Boston that year, but he didn't say the name of the ship. Thanks for sharing, Stef!

      Thank you! That’s definitely one of my best KGIIs, certainly the best later head (1740-54) that I have! I dug a beautiful 1739 early head KGII maybe 4 years ago, and that one is the nicest early head I’ve got. Yup… that’s how often we find them up here! 😂 If it’s a colonial thickness, I usually assume it’s a KGII, lol! Often proven correct.

    The round was looking piece could be a rivet back

    • @StefDigs

      Could be, although usually they’re just a solid round piece of brass versus having a hole. Then again it could be a different type of rivet that I’ve just never dug before. 🤷🏼

    Do you use water on your finds? If you're using tap water that can discolor coins. I find it most common in nickels to turn bright red. Try distilled water. Happy Hunting!

    • @StefDigs
      @StefDigs  6 місяців тому

      Thank you! Nope, I generally won’t use water in the field unless it’s on silver (unless I announce that I’ve done so on a copper, and typically that’s reserved for farm field crust). That 2nd coin literally shined up to red with a toothbrush! I suspect fire damage, as I’ve found other fire-damaged relics and coins at this site.
