    I sat in the living room while they recorded this chat... you do NOT want to miss it. I'm so excited this is finally premiering!! And, also, everyone needs to read his book, Theft of Fire: Orbital Space #1, it's AMAZING (there's a three-chapter preview on Devon's website)

      I see a LINK it appears you placed in the chat, but UA-cam blocked it (I am moderator, so can see it). Please give me website (don't paste address, just write the name) and I will vet it and if legit, will post it in chat during the podcast 🐈

    If the author / engineer / opinionator gig doesn't work out, he'd do well as a basso profundo opera singer. His voice, wow!

    I used to be primarily interested in literary analysis when I was younger, Cormac McCarthy's unparalleled, Melvillean treatment of the form, and usage of anti-metaphor, was practically the most brilliant thing I've ever engaged with.
    Postmodernism has absolutely no place in politics, but very much has a place in literature, in my opinion.
    Edit: McCarthy also transcends postmodernism.

    The difference between a "disagreeable person" and a Karen is that a disagreeable person embraces critique of their own thoughts and ideas and a Karen doesn't. A Karen is disagreeable just to be disagreeable.

    The limits of money, for the US, is the part that EVERYONE in this space gets wrong.
    The short answer is, assume there practically ARE no such limits for our historically anomalous country, and the REAL problem is just that the ppl are getting robbed.

    I wonder if you could set up a system where you only had state level legislative and mostly state level judicial branches with only a federal executive branch and limited judicial branch just to make sure the states have some coalition to maintain somthing with global power. Effectively would it be possible for states to operate as almost independent nations outside of a constitution that binds them and an executive branch that essentially operates as a nato style millitary pact. I could be wrong about this but the only problem i see with separation is the geopolitical implications of the global hegemont dissolving over night. Not to mention that old saying of divide and conquer where foreign interests start licking their lips and thinking which scrap they can jocky for. Where as the problem with the US sticking togeather is that there is now a complete divergence of interest groups, values, narratives and moral language that can only be reconsiled by seperation or the annihilation of one side or another. I don't know, from what this guy is saying, the legislative branch is being superseded as a natural consequence anyway.

    Ah, Boomer here....not a socialist....not an emotional decision maker....so I resent the description of the collective assessment of my generation. I am for individual freedoms and individual responsibility. Wasn't a hippie and am appalled by radical progressivism. Just sayin'. I would also argue that it is the elites of each generation that are the problem, not the generation they identify with.

    A bit of pushback re: feminism and gender ideology. He says that feminism is not a cohesive movement or ideology, or is at least ill-defined, then almost immediately and broadly says feminism created gender ideology, and that isn’t ironic that the child is eating the mother and isn’t that a shame. Yet we know that a lot of (most?) early gender “pioneers” were men- Hirschfeld, Money, e.g. Women, which most feminists are, are conflated with gender ideologists (likely due to recency bias), the latter of which have a fair number of men (pedophilic men at that) in their ranks. The take is either genuinely underinformed or sensationalized, i.e., appeal to “feminism is cancer”.

    I keep saying, immigration reform is just as important as the populists think, but completely halting immigration during an unprecedented manufacturing buildout and smaller native Zoomer bottleneck, would be much worse than the populists realize.

    • @TormentedDreamer
      @TormentedDreamer 3 місяці тому +1

      It very much helps in conversations on this topic I've found, to split migration from immigration. Students, temporary labour, making international love merge to national cohabitation etc? That's an entirely different animal than showing up and claiming you deserve a handout for the sake of having a sobstory (true or not). Pretty much all the annoyance comes from the latter, and much of the annoyance of the former is downstream of a completely overwhelmed infrastructure (housing, integration, heck even simple stuff like transportation, waste disposal etc).

    • @Jules-Is-a-Guy
      @Jules-Is-a-Guy 3 місяці тому

      @@TormentedDreamer I feel you, but of course the bitterly tangy irony is that, we're gonna need the immigrant workforce to build all the housing! (Mainly in places with land for development in vicinity of urban areas, like good ol' Texas).
      I'm not sure it's theoretically possible to halt all immigration temporarily, in order to institute policy reform, if we did so then we wouldn't want that to continue for long due to economic considerations, so government in this case would have to work effectively, move quickly, in a bipartisan fashion, and it's impossible to get to the end of this sentence without laughing at the sheer impossibility of such competency.

    The word artificial is not very helpful to achieving an understanding that humans don’t own complex problem solving. Is ours the “real” intelligence? Well, it it’s something humans can do. Consider that birds can fly “for real.” Do we say humans “artificially” fly? No, because it is irrelevant. Humans fly much faster and farther than any bird. We anticipate analogous achievements with machine learning. Maybe we should call it supersonic intelligence.
