A beautiful tribute written for Richard Emanuel who died far too young. I think most of us have been through similar things, and know exactly what the questions of this song ask...thanks for posting.
...Stan Szelest co-wrote this. The irony is that by the time the BAND's CD came out with this on it; Stan, too, had passed away. Check out some of his You Tube posts.
Not the biggest The Band fan in the world, but seriously, did these cats ever record a bad song/album? Because honestly everything I have ever heard from them is epic.
You gotta get to the "deep cuts" and go beyond the exhausted radio played hits. It's the same with Van Morrison's album "Moondance". "Into the Mystic" is haunting. But...., If I hear "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino,"or that title song again I'll punch the pizza delivery guy.
I don't insist one version or another is "superior", but I think any fan of this song owes it to themselves to hear both versions. The Band's version is quite different from Shear's. Theirs is in a higher key and has some additional musical intro, such as the intro. This is not the first Band-member/Jules Shear collaboration; "Never Again or Forever" from Shear's Healing Bones album was written with Rick Danko. And that's a beautiful song, even without Band-quality vocals.
I would imagine Jules Shear did some of the chord changes as well. However, we hear in The Band's version some musical material which isn't in Shear's version at all, which I find very refreshing. The two versions are very different.
Ty Webb from Can You Hear Me podcast wants this song played when he dies. Gustav and Heavy will not honor this request and opt for Macho Man by The Village People instead. If you don't know what I'm talking about you are not a real American.
If this song was written for anyone in particular (I think it was written for us all, thanks Jules) then it was for Stan Szelest: ua-cam.com/video/0xwKJynF9JE/v-deo.html

Manuel********
His name was Richard Onanuel, you ass.
Miss these guys so much
me too forever
Rick really knocked this one out of the park. Book faded brown is another great song that Rick also sung. He was a great player, singer, and writer.

Gran canción. Preciosa voz de Rick Danko.
Danko has such an underrated voice. Maybe cause he was in a band (actually The Band) with Levon. They were all great.
My favorite Canadian voice. Sorry, Neil, Gord, and Joni.
Yes RIP Levon, but too soon gone was written for Richard Manuel... great song
Remembering Richard today...36 years on...
I remember hearing Imus reporting on Helm's death on the show, talking about what a great guy he was and what an amazing voice.
Very relaxing and beautiful
My Great Pyrenees puppy is named Danko, the Golden Retriever you see here is Butter named for Paul Butterfield another dear friend..

Then how can you not be a fan?

Sounds like you are indeed a big fan, and justifiably so!
@@stevekohut9888 he didn't say he wasn't a fan. Just not the biggest one. Totally acceptable, no?
R.I.P. Keicho. Your little bro will make you proud yet.
