      @rapidfirer56 i hate Webex. Like I'm sorry but sharing screen shouldn't hide my damn meeting controls. Like don't give a shortcut of Ctrl + Shift + Q that i have to use. And most of the time it doesn't work. So if someone is sharing content there is a good chance I can't mute. And I dont want to have to hold the space bar every time I wanna talk for as long as I wanna talk. Like if you are temp talking for something like a yes or no it's great. But when I am leading a meeting and sharing my screen. It's kinda important to be able to consistently mute myself for obvious reasons.

      Once in a while I have discovered a app that doesn't load correctly with them all set to 0. In the event you encounter it, set Animator Animation Scale to 0.5, and it will fix it. You can leave the other two set to 0. I encountered this once recently, and my guess is the app waits indefinitely for the animation to play, but locks up because it never plays.

      With the no fingerprint options, it also more often takes a second time to scan your eyes, even longer.
      And now think about avery app opening and closing you do all day long. It is probably just 300-500ms but even that adds up over the whole day to at least a minute.. a minute of just waiting and getting angry because that animation feels slow af.
      Again like linus said, it isn't per se a problem. However, it is a problem if you get denied the option for changing YOUR device how you like it and not how some Tim Apple SoCal tech-hippie decides how he likes it best.

    As a former Senior Advisor at Apple, Car Play has long had issues. The problem is that support is foisted onto the car dealerships. I always went out of my way to help Car Play users, by setting up a screen share to their phone, opening the camera app, & pointing it at the car’s infotainment system, because I knew they wouldn’t get anywhere if they went to the car dealer, like we were told to tell them.

    8:06 I think that orientation lock thing _is_ an iOS 18 bug. I’ve been using iPhones for over a decade now, and I didn’t remember ever running into that problem, so I stopped the video to experiment. I tried several video apps and several games and a couple other things, and I couldn’t get any of them to do what you showed.
    • If I enabled orientation lock while the phone was vertical, everything stayed portrait in UA-cam (maximizing the video left a mostly black screen with a landscape video across the middle), Netflix and a couple of the games forced left-landscape, and everything else stayed portrait.
    • if I enabled orientation lock while the phone was already in left-landscape, the video apps and games stay locked in left-landscape and the other apps insisted on switching back to portrait and stayed locked there.
    • if I enabled orientation lock in right-landscape, the video apps and games stayed locked in right-landscape and the other apps insisted on switching back to portrait and stayed locked there.
    I’m running iOS 17.latest on an iPhone 14 Pro. While there’s clearly a default (left-landscape), and that’s backwards from how I usually use my phone (left-handed, so I’m more likely to flip it to right-landscape, i.e., rotate it clockwise 90° when I want landscape), for me the orientation lock doesn’t have a preferred landscape orientation, and will preserve whichever one you’re in when you enable it.
    And that’s my recollection of previous iOS, too. From my recollection, what’s new is that orientation lock has become “portrait orientation lock”-it used to just lock whatever orientation you were in when turned on. Not sure I like the new functionality.

    • @joeyl.3007
      @joeyl.3007 11 годин тому

      Mine (16PM) seems to work like Linus', and I think "Und ONLY ONCE" is actually intentional. It SAYS Portrait Orientation lock, but what if the user opens a landscape app like a game? As Apple seems to see it, the intention behind someone using Orientation Lock is to [stop the damn phone from rotating], so what is the phone to do if an app forces landscape? It carries that same *intention* to the game. But rather than assuming you want it to be left landscape or right landscape, it just lets you choose. If you open the app, it goes one way, but if you've turned the phone so the opposite side is "up", it knows it's probably supposed to be in the other landscape direction, so it flips once to the way you're actually holding it, THEN it locks *that* orientation in place. This way, you can just always leave Orientation Lock on, but at the same time, you (hopefully) don't ever need to worry about it locking in to the *wrong* landscape orientation. Whether left or right landscape, just turn it the way you want it, and it will stay locked in that landscape direction until you leave the app.

I really like the Pixel line and the way everything works on Android. Once Apple Music was a thing on Android, the only thing an iPhone had for me that was missing was FaceTime and iMessage. RCS messaging being available between iOS and Android fixes one of these. But I'm tempted to go back to my 15 Pro Max, because despite the 9 Pro XL having a bigger battery, it doesn't last as long as my 15 Pro Max did. Average use, I could get 2 full days on the 15 Pro Max, the Pixel, maybe a day and a half. Otherwise, all these nuances Linus points out, yeah some of them are annoying, like why can't the settings for an app be in the app on iOS? I don't really notice any of them otherwise, probably because I swap so frequently.

    7:00 Another reason that I can think of that may have caused Linus to get used to the landscape orientation having the top of the phone on the left side and the bottom on the right side is because that is the default landscape orientation at least for Android, when auto-rotate is locked to portrait and/or the "Sensors Off" developer setting is enabled when the phone is on a flat surface.
    Also at 40:52 it was originally what Luke was theorizing, with notifications being on the left/center and control center being on the right, but Apple never updated those areas after the notch shrunk/turned into an island, so it seems unintuitive.

    • @Shzl47
      @Shzl47 Місяць тому +6

      Regardless of what the default orientation is, it should still switch to face you based on the tilt of the phone because it's an orientation lock - not a rotate lock. I just tested it on my Motorola, and with Auto-Rotate Off, Lanscape-only apps will still rotate to face me based on the tilt of the phone. I'm sure a lot of android users are used to this behavior when keeping that setting turned off.
      I always keep Auto-Rotate Off because switching from Portrait to Landscape based on diagonal tilt is finicky and always happens when I'm not holding the phone horizontally. In order to comfortably use an iPhone, I'd have to regularly toggle off the lock when using Landscape-only apps and then back on when I'm done (hope I don't forget).

      You can actually it's just now very very very hidden and a pain in the rear. This used to a be a default setting in early day android, as well as having a custom led flash for each contact.
      Then after I think it was android 5 the submenu got hidden and was only accessible 3rd party apps and from the conversation from texting, It's still there and thankfully once set it will pretty much follow you from device to device. I learned this as I used to use led flashes, and text tones to indicate what my notifications are and which ones are a priority to check and not cheek at either a glance, or a tone. Sadly it looks like Led flash is no longer present but notifications by contact and app is still possible just a pain on android.
      edit where to find it
      Right to find it you go to a conversation the three dots details notifications then down to sound and you should be able to set up sounds. I do not recall how to add customs sounds from you're own music or sound clips anymore as I haven't needed to add anything in ages but there are ways to do that as well.

    One thing that Linus is "missing" with his review of the iPhone is using it with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. I'm a long time iPhone user, but if it didn't have all the ecosystem features with the laptop, and speakers, and earbuds, and so on, I'd probably switch to Android. Losing .1s because of untweakable animation speed is a bummer, but saving minutes/hours using the MacOS message app, or using Airdrop, etc, is much more valuable to me

    Not saying the Lock Screen -> Desktop shouldn’t require an extra touch, but the main reason is “locked” notifications. When your phone is locked, apps can choose to hide their notification content. The notification is there, but Messages might just say “iMessage” and when you unlock the phone, the details populate.
    “You could always just pull down the Notification Center” true, but if I just want to quickly check my notifications while keeping them behind some form of privacy, this is the better method.
    Apple should add a “Lock Screen behaviors” setting page so users can choose what they want.

    Ha, you actually helped me with an issue I've had with the latest version of twitter on android.
    Videos will now auto-progress to a new video, or ad, after a video plays, and on android you can't prevent it from happening (which is another annoyance - you can turn this off on iOS apparently) but when it's an ad, it'll often disable the button bar, and put the back in the top left of screen - seemingly just like iOS used to?
    Anyway, gesturing/swiping left to right will also back out of it.
    I still want to disable autoplay next video, and I'd also love it the regular back bar would not get disabled, but at least there is a 1-hand gesture to get back.

  • @rpendleton
    @rpendleton Місяць тому +17

    15:40 Swipe-to-go-back (or as the SDK calls it, the interactive pop gesture) is an automatic feature of UINavigationController. This controller has been available since the very first version of the iOS SDK, and the interactive pop gesture was added to all apps using that controller a bit later. Linus mentioned that swiping back doesn't work in a lot of apps, and my best guess is that those apps aren't using the standard iOS navigation controllers at all. This would mean there isn't much Apple can do to add a better-placed back button or behavior in these apps with the "old iOS paradigm" of navigation, because they're not actually using iOS navigation controllers to begin with.
    (Technically, developers can disable the interactive pop gesture if it conflicts with other gestures on a page. However, this is usually only done in apps where swiping from the edge of the screen is important for other functionality, like in drawing apps.)

So that’s why their interface when your phone is locked is always the same, but if you specifically open the app And go to the call section, they are allowed to design their own UI.

    The camera button is half baked. I get what they were trying to do but the shutter button and the wheel on an SLR are separate for a reason. The axes are split so you don’t need robotically precise fingers to use the controls intuitively. Combining them into one button for the phone introduces input confusion.

    I had several android phones throughout the 2010s. Dell Streak, Galaxy Nexus, One Plus 3 and a Samsung note 9 before I got an iPhone 13.
    With all of them I was able to modify the user interface for what was most comfortable for me. The keyboard is a great example, I have chunky digits and unfortunately shaky hands so apple’s keyboard doesn’t help much. Being able to resize it so it takes up more space would be a helpful feature.
    On a side note I’ve found Picture in Picture mode usually stays on if you’re watching said content then swipe to home, if you minimise it but stay in the app then swipe to home it doesn’t do picture on picture.
    Last thing I want to say is I hate it when apple fans say “just buy an android.”
    What that says to me is you’ll get a better experience with the competition because Apple won’t do it. It’s a very backwards an exclusionary view point to have rather than saying “we don’t have this feature we should demand it because it’ll help x people.”
