I would love if you did a full course on negotiating salary! Even if it was a paid course, I would throw cash at you. Such an under-appreciated skill, and I feel like there are so few fully fledged examples of how to do it beginning to end. ❤

@@im-augy thank you, yes I've seen it. I think there is a lot of nuance that goes into the actual negotiations that I would love a longer course rather than an overview video.
Not in this job market though. They would hire who has lower salary expectations
oh man - i keep getting this question! i really want to get down to the actual examples, numbers, and sweaty decision points that have actually happened behind the scenes. they do contain a lot of sensitive information, so it gets a lil tricky if i wanted to put something out there that captures those examples.
I know negotiation stories and the exact details are so rare to come across, so i do want to contribute and help folks have the language to get their value. this might be something i release later down on the line tho.
but yes i'm open to doing this!! feel free to dm me if you have specific suggestions on how to bring this to life!

Sending you love and support! You honestly got some awesome mentors and the world is giving you the green light to follow your dreams. You always got bokchoy to keep you grounded and supported, and there's never a better time than yesterday. It's 100% harder to believe the signs/metrics/data/leading indicators when it comes to your own dream, sweat, tears, money, life force, etc, but it is also 100% more rewarding in the end. My girlfriend is about to finish school so she can have more time to watch our 2 year old daughter, meaning I’ll be going back to work after being home these past 6 months and I’ve been really anxious about betting on myself now and going full time grind mode. This video came at a perfect time for me, and it’s time to bet on myself and reach the potential that is truly there for the taking!
I’ve got mixed thoughts about the hero’s journey advice - the fictional examples shared were single, young and without any dependents. I don’t think taking a job in tech means that you’re scared at all. As you already know, it’s a legitimate option for many as it gives you a fixed salary which in turn gives you freedom to do a lot of things. We all create our own stories and narratives about the best life to lead and don’t feel pressured to do this because it worked out well for the guy who advised you. There are pros and cons to lots of the different options available and you ultimately need to sit and listen to your gut/heart and hear out what it’s telling you to do. It might be that you follow this guy’s advice or you might not but there’s no shame in either. Wishing you all the best with whatever you pick ❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰
this is very true! but also i realize i didn't share more context on what the hero's journeys could look like - it can also be having a family, going to school, moving to a new city, taking a new job, or taking a first office job outside of your town. i think the hero's journey is super contextual based on the walk of life you've lived so far. it's just acting on that inner voice in the back of your head.
every mentor did tell me "sure you can def go back. if you want to have kids, take mat leave, do your employee thing. it's totally fine. but i'm telling you chloe, the time is now (esp before you have kids). you can do that later! it'll be there!"
so they definitely did not dismiss path 1 for me - it's really a matter of sequencing. i can very much see myself go back after building out the projects i've always wanted to do!

@@chloeshih 🥰 TBH I am pretty type A, so I'm trying to embrace trusting the process and being kinder of myself. I've started other new roles trying to operate at 100% from day 1, but I need to give myself grace for the first couple months and be open to the change and a learning curve. I'll also start really working with product managers (as a product marketing manager) so I've been watching your vids to better understand pms' needs and how I can be additive!

Great vid Chloe! I have a question for you. So I am a Chinese American who used to live in SF, and my life was pretty similar to yours (based on the videos). I was always surrounded by Asians, we ate Asian things, and basically were all in an Asian bubble. I’ve since moved to France now for the first time actually have diverse friends. Do you think being in an Asian bubble is a good or bad thing? Does it limit our opportunities for growth and openness?

Amazing! Personally, it’s between maintaining relationships - do you reach out to them regularly? Occasionally? What’s a good cadence to maintain that connection while not being glued to the phone messaging people back all the time - or is that not possible? Is it a lot of effort?
The other is actually connecting with people I look up to or maybe reconnecting with people who I haven’t spoken to in a long time. How do you start the conversation? Are in-person meetups better than virtual? How do you approach people at conferences? How do you get people to trust your genuine in your outreach?
Also had a career shift when I was 30, total shift and move to another country with a wife+a son+a son who was born two weeks after me moving alone (cos I wanna give them a bit more certainty). So, I feel you. 🙌
