Hey man huge fan of ur videos! Im 17 going to school for diesel mechanics in a year and have been working in a auto shop to learn the field before going to school, really pumped to get into stuff like this have always thought of working on CAT trucks and all the crazy equipment your around!
Dude!!!! I have to give you insane props! Your videos were absolutely incredible in helping me change the cylinder head on my 5ek. Very informative, not drawn out needlessly, and spot on! This one especially!! Huge help my friend thank you!!! I wish I could sub 100 times.
Awesome video! I use a set of blueprint feelerblades for small engine repair and a 3/8” fully threaded bolt to insert in timing hole ! So far has worked just fine! Thanks for sharing 👍. Sorry bluepoint feeler blades lol !
We have a little dial indicator that bolts up in one of the peanut cover bolt holes. Its just a little right angle bracket, takes up no room. Works wicked, never had a problem.
Had to do the front cover gaskets 2 winters ago and this worked perfect with lining that bolt up, this winter I rebuilt the engine and had to use a slightly thinner spacer plate under the head and had to mess with the backlash for a little over an hour to get it it right, fun times
I have rebuilt c-15's with a reman head the head was cut I set the timing gear with the pin backlash was tight I use a great tool for backlash cat tool #462-5095 it's a segment gear check it out
Yes I am the guy who invented the gear. Showed it to a Cat factory man and in a few years guess what tool CAT released? I made the first one out of a normal gear that had a tooth failure (still use it). Cam gear CCW, increases lash, while CW decreases lash. I set my engine cam and crank on TDC 1. Install my cut gear and measure my lash. If I have to adjust lash sometimes I use the feeler gauge as a stop point. Usually a .006 and rotate cam gear until it starts to get tight. Snug my adjuster get feeler gauge out and recheck the lash. The .006 keeps from hitting the min spec. After I feel lash/timing is close enough and torqued adjuster. I than reinstall running gear and recheck lash. For some reason my cut gear can change lash by .002. All this mess started in the MBN days and CEL was coming on for timing out of phase. We had to replace reman cylinder heads just installed for this. Cat than increased lash a few times to solve the problem. I try and get as close to the timing mark as I can with lash in the window. I really don't like less than .010, but have to go with what you got.
I had a loud rattling sound coming off from peanut cover took it off everything seem fine then I found the bearing on the ideler gear was worn out so I’m hopping this will fix my issue just waiting on parts
Hey there, like your vids, they're very informational. I have a 3406E in a freightliner classic, truck run strong but... somewhere in the middle of the day my yellow check engine ligh comes on and almost immediately the red shut down engine light comes on they blink anywhere from 3-16 times before it turns off my engine, almost immediately they will turn off and the engine will operate normally again. All gauges are normal and engine doesn't studder or no noise or vibration from engine. would you have an idea what to look for or at?
Man I love watching these videos but I also hate them because I just know there are thousands of mechanics that would bypass these very important technical steps in the interest of saving time.
absolutely love your video's . do you have away to pull up info on serial # . I have a 3406E with a 4as00244 # my local cat dealer said he cant find any info other than its a cat reman. i know its set at 550hp but not sure its was at time of rebuild . reason for needing info is #5 injector lobe is spalling and i need to change the cam and really could use a part # so i have it before i tear it down. thanks
Hello Josh, if you have some time I have a question... I have a F250 diesel (international) started smoking like crazy. u had looked at by diesel mechanic, said it was the fuel injection pump, $2,800 for repair. is that too high and is something I can do my self. I usually do the small repairs in my 77Blazer gasoline engine? please advise .Oz
Hey Josh, I know most people do not have a CAT back lash Bone but that's how I've always done it along with the timing pin in the 3/8 hole you're pointing out. So you really only have to use the hole and the tool is not used?
I know this is an old comment but if the head has been shaved or if the block has ever been decked the alignment hole will not work because the head, and cam gear, are physically closer to the idler gear. The back lash will be too tight and could spin the front cam bearing due to the gears trying to move away from each other under torque. I just snug two of the nuts on the stub shaft and tap it with a soft dead blow hammer until I get the back lash right, then torque everything with blue loctite.
Roy Rodriguez Hi, I enjoyed your videos. I have a 1994 Peterbilt 379 with a 3406 B. Truck was running good until the turbo went out. Unfortunately the mechanic that was working on it miss diagnose the problem. The truck had lost power and was smoking real bad,,real bad. He replace all 6 fuel injectors then had me rebuild the fuel injector pump then he realized it was the turbo. After he put everything together the truck sounded like it was on steroids and still was smoking a little bit. I took it to another mechanic to check the timing and supposedly was out 2 teeth. But every time it went up a hill loaded it was lacking power. starting from the bottom off the hill it will only go to 35 or 40 max loaded 72,000 total weight. If it was driving at 65 and hit a hill it will go down to 40's. Engine sounds weak too. Any advice to what to work on. I am from Chicago west suburbs and is hard to find a mechanic that knows how to work on this older engines. Thanks Roy
hey Bro have a question for you. i have a BXS cat that i recently overhauled pulled front cover down and re-bushing all the gears i have been fighting code 22-11 for weeks now and i can not seem to get it to go away. I have been working on Cat motors for over 15 years.. and i have never had this much trouble with one . Truck did not have this problem before i repaired the motor. if you have ever had a problem like this please let me know what you found wrong. i have followed Cat SIS troubleshooting sensors are new and i have check OHM reading they are to cat specs and sensor are genuine cat. Today I tired another Camshaft gear in it and had same issue. I pulled transmission out of truck to make sure flywheel was on Dial pin on back of crankshaft. LOL I REALIZED after doing all that the flywheel can be checked by making sure both holes pin on driver and passenger side of motor. My next thing is doing a timing probe to reset the timing. if that does not work i am pulling the front cover again to see if the cluster gear is ok
Where did you get 0.014" and 0.024" from? I cant find anywhere on sis that doesn't list that the backlash spec on a C15 is 0.216 ± 0.114 mm (0.0085 ± 0.0045 inch)
My 2ws with 50000 miles on rebuild has a loud and heavy "rattling" "bad bearing" sound around peanut cover area. I want to pull cover and check this. Is there a gasket on cover I will need to replace ??? Awesome vids and very much appreciated!!!
@adeptape Question and hope to get an answer soon in my 3406e cat testing and adjusting manual it say my backlash should be between .003-.010 and what you showed is .011 different. Wonder if that was updated by cat or is just different in newer c15 manuals
With the dual sensors added and at that time Cat was offering reman heads that was shaved. Sometimes you could not get the lash in the window. So current spec is 0.014 +/- 0.010. Or min of 0.004, max 0.024. Try and stay off the min. Single sensor engines are more forgiving. Dual, you might get a CEL as you could be out of phase.
Hey man got a question my 3406b peec keeps throwing a code for low oil pressure new main and rods and oil pressure sensor checked pressure with a manual gauge and reads 50 psi at idle and 75 running but I still keep getting the code even a new ecm dont know where im loosing pressure if im really loosing it or could it be the injection pump
I gotta crazy problem with my 3406b that no one can figure out. full inframe, head reconditioned and injector pump done but will only run, albeit not quite right (low boost hard starting poor power) with fuel timing retarded 2 or 3 degrees. I'm thinking cam timing is out. Care to way in?
Did this start after rebuild? Who rebuilt engine? Cat dealer or local shop? Advance timing will cause low boost. Full serial number, major part numbers of replaced parts. Example, head, cylinder packs, nozzles, injection pumps. Also any part number that has to do with performance.
nice work that's a time saver of a trick. what do u use to pull the cam gear off the crank I was trying to get one off a Cummins m11 it was quite difficult just curious if you have a trigger tip for that
Hey Josh this is love you're videos very hepfull ..I have a question I have a c15 single turbo it has the 3 piece exhaust manifold I just bought the truck and it looks like it's dripping oil from in between the manifold where it comes together it is missing like a gasket or something should I be worried .?
Are you sure you dont want a teaching position over here at "What's a matter you"? How about SLU.."Stand'n Lean University"? "Morning Wood Academy"? And there's "Puffer Tech" in Colorado. All fine institutions...lmao! 😂
No it was the reason I lost the last engine. Constant blue smoke (not oil). New injectors and no change. turned out to be creating hotspots to the point it drilled down into the pistons until it blew out a chunk of number 3. then inframed and still had the blue smoke and barely started. Then injector pump (7W7800) fully rebuilt and still smoked and wouldn't start. Tried advancing fuel timing but got worse so tried retarding timing and got much better.
At 4.47 mins it , you are talking about putting the 3/8 bolt in the alignment hole . I did not see any 3/8 bolt in the video. is the bolt a tight fit in the hole. but the bolt has thread on the end of it , going into that what looks like a smooth bore alignment hole. You just lost me on that bit . I need to see the bolt in the hole , and how much play is left in that backing plate that u tighten with all those nuts ?
you nice mechanic, please help me i have cat 15 freightliner columbia, 2009 my automatic, when i start no start come error (.....) rad light and error 88 untill i go to 6 time key on/off what is problem please help me bcz i go to dealer more then 5 time then charge me one day next day same problem error 88, anyone help me thankyou
Thank you Harold, I don't mind if someone wants to use a clip or discuss my videos, but to repost an entire video is messed up. I notified them to remove the video.

Thank you for the nice comment. Good luck on your cylinder head swap.
just got done with replacing a front cover an resealing the plate to motor , an I Tryed that worked great ! Thanks for the tip 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼!

+Эльдар Юсифов Hello from America, thanks for watching.
I knew one of your videos would come in handy at work! Thanks man, keep up the good work!! :)
These videos relax me
I really could use your help. We have a 3406e that's turning over but will not fire. We've tried everything.
Thanks I with I’d know this when I was in the army

Why is it not important to check the back lash between the bottom gear and the idler? Thanks!
Great work thanks for sharing
Can I take the backlash measurement with the valves and jakes still set?
damm you are good mechanic mate thanks for put this vedeo helping much really great detaills information cheers from norway
Man I love watching these videos but I also hate them because I just know there are thousands of mechanics that would bypass these very important technical steps in the interest of saving time.
They should not be called mechanics if they would skip any confirmatory steps.
Excellent !
So when do you install the timing belt?? Just kidding. Ha Hs

Lol none got time for that engine lol
That bolt trick works sometimes but not as often as I wish it did.
I took a metric bolt and worked it until if fits the hole snug. 3/8 bolts are sloppy loose.

Can you do a video on how to compression test a cat 3406 or c15
Boss I set my cat 6nz at 0.014 in the backlash but I get blink code 42. What you think will be the problem, sensors maybe or different issues.

A 1994 sounds like a C model. What is your full engine serial number?
hey 1 more question.what is the difference between a $4000 cam and a $900 billet /forged/cast whats do you recommend

What do you advise in diesel winter weather warm up myth?
Would you ever grind a idler gear in a 3406e model
Thank you sir
exelente bideo amigo me encanto
Thank you help a lot
Hey man got a question my 3406b peec keeps throwing a code for low oil pressure new main and rods and oil pressure sensor checked pressure with a manual gauge and reads 50 psi at idle and 75 running but I still keep getting the code even a new ecm dont know where im loosing pressure if im really loosing it or could it be the injection pump
Is the oil psi sender in the TDM or remote mounted?
It's a faulty indicator
Hi dear cam gear backlash after rocker arm installed and before
After he pinned the engine right? So it's assrmbled

Hi Josh, does caterpillar offer technical training classes thru dealerships?
Neil Neil Yes but some offer only to customers you've to find out from your nearest dealership Neil
If gear is too tight will it cause it yo have a winding sound?
Yes
How can tapit and nozzle setting
ok 1 more ? how can i help contribute to help you out your vids a great
what is better to do a cold start o let it run
