    0:28 that's the weird thing.
    Steam, officially, allows the existence of eroge and other "adult content" games on the storefront... the problem is that, basically, the process of approval is highly inconsistent; it is suspected that some of the staff is biased against Japanese games. Heck, it sometimes happen that a completely-not-eroge Japanese VN gets rejected.
    Also, removal of +18 stuff from those games isn't always caused by publishers wanting to get on Steam, anyway. It often happens in Japan itself, if the game is to be published on consoles; sometimes such "cleaned-up" versions are made just to reach a wider audience, if removal of adult content doesn't detract from the story too much.

      Is that why FSN isn't on steam?

    • @purelysmetalnightcore
      @purelysmetalnightcore 7 місяців тому +9

      @zerodepravityarchive1478 FSN does not have an official English release or Steam release in the first place. That said, Type-Moon just announced about a week ago that FSN is now getting an official English translation and will be available on Steam and the Switch. It's the Realta Nua version released in 2010 which does not have eroge scenes. Nasu removed them when the game was first remade because he didn't like them and didn't want them there in the first place.

    VNDB also lists if the game has +18 patches/editions, and where to get them. Or other patches (like some community made patches that give better voiceovers and such).
    VNDB usually lists all the storefronts you can purchase the game from.
    And if the game is set to be localized, it probably has info on that too.
    It also lists the voice actors for the characters in the VN (info some people might like).

    I would say the top tip is to learn japanese since a lot of banger visual novels won't ever get a translation, like eustia.
    You only have to learn the alphabet, then go read, you will soon pick up the grammar and kanji naturally.
    I'm surprised people make a huge deal of learning japanese, it's all distractions and a waste of time. Just start immersing from day one and you will be surprised by how far you can get without learning "the right way".

    Always cool to find someone who like Utawarerumono. It was the first Eroge I played that had tactical gameplay in it, such a cool combination. Even the anime series was awesome and still holds up. I binge rewatch it every 3-4 years . The scope of the story is so well done, most series would take the entire run time just to gain control of the first region, Utw does it in it's first 1/3rd.

    Lossless Scaling upscales even better than Magpie. (at least for me) But it costs 7 Euro, tough. But it also allows you to add frame generation to any game regardless of your graphics card, so I think it's worth it.

    • @michaelg8841
      @michaelg8841 7 місяців тому +6

      You’d be surprised how much story content can be added by 18+ patches, even though it is obvious you are joking. Nukitashi is one of my favorite visual novels, but not just for the h scenes, but it has a great plot and comedy. Without the 18+ patch though, the game is horrible because you lose almost all of that, since the whole visual novel is erotic in nature, considering the story is hosted on a sex obsessed island

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero 7 місяців тому

      Dunno why anyone would want to play VN's without the 18+ content. Something like Phoenix Wright had a decent chunk of gameplay/exploration focus, but most VN's basically just come down to making choices (though I also wouldn't mind an 18+ version of the original trilogy with every single one of the cute girls getting lewded, no exception. This does not include Oldbag since she's not cute in the first place). Anything else would need 18+ content.
      I'm not exactly a VN player though. I've played a few and I usually just want more game to my games. If I want anime-style story I read manga or watch anime.

    • @_JustMonika
      @_JustMonika 7 місяців тому +3

      @@thenonexistinghero if you want sex scenes, you can just watch hentai? Do you only watch movies that show sex? Or only read erotic books? Not everyone needs/wants sexual content in their media. I've read enough VN's with sexual content and most of them are badly written (the h-scenes, at least) and not worth the time.

      In all seriousness, it can depend. Sometimes, H scenes only exist because, at the time, the creators think their game wouldn't sell, FSN comes to mind, and the infamous "mana transfer" scenes or MLA which has this random tentacle grape scene just slotted into the middle of this very depressing narrative.

    VNDB you can also turn specific spoilers on in tags, so if you can't handle something like rape (and its subset tags) you can highlight it on in profile settings and enable spoilers so you at least know what you're getting yourself into (I'm fine with it in horror but specific very popular VN it happens before first choice made me think I should at least know it'll happen). And unofficial fan translation links are great on there to, or I never would've found the Plastic Memories PS Vita VN that I really loved even over the anime, Angel Beats 1st Beat as well and the fact that the translation for the Golden Time VN has been on hiatus for years that has me really annoyed.
    Also Magpie will be good, Aokana can stop randomly stretching on scene changes when I'm not plugged into a HDMI and Kanon won't stretch out on said HDMI

    I like Magpie, it works great, if your VN is one resolution down, like if you have 1080p monitor and the VNs resolution is 720p, then it will look great or if you have steam deck, its gonna look great almost whatever resolution, since its a handheld. I have 1440k monitor and the detail loss is quite more noticable with 720p VNs, even if you mess around with Magpie upscale options. If you try totono or The Fruit of Grisaia on my monitor, it just doesnt look the same.
    Also, I'll CONSIDER other stores than steam ONLY when those publisher's translators stop putting western memes and butchering original material.. As of now, every other VN translation from every publisher is butchered in one way or another. They gonna get all my money when they start putting that money into proper translations, which they dont.

      1) My appearance is mid
      2) socialising is mid
      3) Getting a partner would take a decade and a signifcant amount of effort and money
      4) Slice of life in visual novels gets to the jokes and fun stuff quicker than an actual relationship
      5) the possibility of toxic relationships, your partner may be manipulative and even toxic which would be extremely damaging especially when you have invested so much time and effort and money
      6) Your time would be compromised, you would have to follow and go through with your partner's plans and also your friend's plans, this would be annoying for someone just trying to focus on one particular thing that is fun for example anime. Sometimes you just want to binge watch anime but you can't because your friend or partner has plans for you or wants to play games with you. Having multiple sources of dopamine can lead to burnout and the feeling of being lost as you don't know what you have accomplished and experienced and just feel like you are going with the flow and do not have any influence in what you do. It feels like you are trapped.
      7) if you do get a partner the likely next step would be marriage, this is very costly and very time consuming
      8) It is incredibly hard to get a good-looking and attractive girlfriend, this is because we are grown in a society where men are expected to approach girls and women's expectations are incredibly high, this leads to having a girlfriend with mid appearances. It may feel annoying to spend all this time and effort on a girlfriend that looks mid.
      9) visual novels include many heroines to choose from and you can experience many heroine routes, getting a partner would restrict you with only dating that partner as doing otherwise would be considered cheating. This is fine for people that are very in love, but if you have a mid looking girlfriend then this is problematic.
      10) socialising can lead to a lack of focus in academic studies. Having people constantly trying to start a conversation can be very focus depleting and can lead to people burning out quicker. Imagine having a friend constantly messaging you whilst you study or you're in school and someone keeps trying to talk to you. And to makes matters worse if you decide to ignore them for a significant amount of time, then it would lead to falling out and the relationship/friendship fizzling out.
      11) when you have a partner, it is natural for you to start living together especially if you are getting married, sharing a house could be constricting as you feel that someone is constantly monitoring and judging you and don't have any privacy to yourself. You could just shout and sing goofy songs or just say internal monologues when you have a girlfirend in fear that she may think you're cringe and not cool. Also you can't just relax and master bait to good eroge or po*n in fear of your girlfriend catching you and being called cringe.
      12) your girlfriend has access to all your stuff and as a result you could feel that your privacy is being invaded especially if your girlfriend is nosy.
      13) when you have friends you actively have to be self conscious and check that your appearance looks good because your friends will judge how you look. In addition if the environment is poor and your friends are bad people, you could get into dr*gs which is very harmful but this is kinda rare
      14) friends may feel like you are drifted from them or you are away from them once you get a partner as you will have to juggle between personal life studies friends and your partner. This can lead to you spending less time with your friends and may even cause conflict which can lead to toxic situations.
