I'll be competing in the Mogul Chessboxing Championship, an event that ‪@ludwig‬ will be throwing in Los Angeles on December 11! Expect many of my daily streams to be about preparing for this event. I'll chronicle some of my journey here on the UA-cam as well. #TOPHBBQSWEEP

Fun fact : Sardoche has promised to do a smash arc (because he plays many games and this is how he organize his schedule) I think it'll be ssbu (because more popular in Europe and more accessible to a casual audience). But if he goes on Melee maybe we'll have a smash Toph x Sardoche collab ? That would be sick after a chess boxing match.
Anyway I'll stop fanboying now good luck to both you and Sardoche on your match I'll be watching.

i love hearing you talk about boxing vs fighting games! i grew up with boxing and have been a consistent viewer of combat sports as well as the FGC since I was young. Connecting the two made everything make a lot more sense. So excited you're getting into boxing man! Its so fun and the absolute best workout

This is how I feel about climbing. Obviously very different from fighting games in the sense that there is no fight but every time you get stronger or more experienced you learn new moves that can be applied on the wall which eventually translates to an overarching style, and a sort of mix up game in the beta (climbing slang for meta) on any individual climbing problem. Now obviously when your climbing you arent directly competing with someone else usually, but since it is a very social sport what does happen is your style informs the strategies of those around you and vice versa as more than one person is typically attempting to complete a climb at any given time. This on it's own is fairly boring but it becomes exciting when you apply it to groups of people with different styles, heights, strength levels, and technical knowledge.
For example I climbed for about 2 years with someone who is 6ft 4in which is about 6 1/2in taller than I am so my climbing style ultimately became more dependant on flexibility, aggressive movements (known as dynamic movement in climbing), and the usage of high footwork his strategies differed. Where I had to jump or leverage a high foot he could simply reach and grab. This did however translate into a strength for me, resulting in a faster over all climbing style that excelled at overhanging routes where as he far outstriped me in any climb involving crimps (very small holds) and balancing. Our styles while different were actually largely pretty similar since we did train together for years, but there were distinct differences which translated to mix ups on the wall which often made it near impossible to share beta.
Any ways climbing, melee, and boxing are all great! And I am glad Toph found another hobby that is bad for your hands.... kinda like climbing....
p.s. going up in climbing grades gives a similar euphoria to mastering tech skill in melee

I have a black belt in martial arts and that bit about fighting games and sparring being similar hit so hard. Down to: my biggest problem when I was training (several years ago now) is that I wouldn't watch my opponent. Which is the exact same mistake I'm constantly trying to fix in fighting games.

Boxing is such a fun sport and I’m glad this event will give it more eyes. The technical aspect of it is so so deep and I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Even if you aren’t a practitioner of boxing, knowing what there doing and why they do something in a match is just as entertaining

I'm afraid for Stanz tho. I think he's going to get dominated in the chess and I'm struggling to imagine he's sweatier than boxbox on the boxing either. Dude is going to get rocked, and needs your help.

Hell yeah, boxing is fun. You're right cardio is everything. You don't want to be tired while another person is trying to knock you out. Another thing is also how tense you are. As your cardio improves and you spar more often you'll be way less stressed. Also I let my hair grow out sometimes and when I do I use one of those headband/head ties to keep my hair out of my face. :)

Toph! Great to hear you love it! Have you thought about other fighting styles? Like Tae Kwon Do or Karate or Wrestling? Just based off of what you said you liked about boxing, you should give them a try. Imo, they give you access to more moves and techniques (not just hand-fist) and so more mix-ups like you said.

Its important to note that Kick Boxing and Muay Thai both have their own unique advantages and both should be trained to some extent. Muay Thai is especially well known and good for its clinch work.

Why not do Melee chess? Stage strike to a neutral stage, 99 stocks. Every time you take a stock, you're allowed to make another move. AKA if you take 10 stocks in a row, you can make 10 chess moves. But you lose your chance to move after another stock is taken. So if you're thinking for too long about your chess move and don't move on the board, your opponent might take a stock and you forfeit your right to your move. So you have to be constantly thinking about the chess game as you're playing, AND try and play your move while your opponent has angel platform invincibility. Ideally you want to star KO so you have a couple seconds to make your move

I came from a heavy trad fighting game background, and did some BJJ. When I was doing the BJJ for a bit, I got the distinct feeling that the flow of BJJ was much more like Melee than other fighting games - managing my stamina for techskill, percentage being getting worn down through exhaustion. ability to get choked out from nowhere maps out to getting gimped at low percent. Stand up fighting is a lot more like trad fighting games - but BJJ definitely felt more like Melee. I haven't done any standup catch wrestling, but I suspect catch wrestling is similar in feel.
