  • This is the story of Lahore Canal, a vibrant artery that slices through the eastern part of the city, stretching from Jallo Morr to Thokar Niaz Baig. For those of us who have seen the Canal evolve over the years, it holds an extraordinary place in our hearts-its significance is both enigmatic and profound. This beloved waterway has been a source of energy and aesthetic delight, weaving together history, ecology, and a deep sense of belonging.
The Canal route, often affectionately referred to as "Nehr o Nehr" by Lahoris, is a cherished thoroughfare known for its stunning scenery. Traveling along it is always a pleasure, offering a visual feast that never fails to impress. The Lahore Canal’s story begins in the Mughal era with the construction of the “Shahi Nalla” by Emperor Jahangir (1569-1627), initially designed to irrigate the lush Shalimar Gardens. The Canal was later realigned during the British Raj and is now managed by the Punjab government.
Today, the Canal is a vital part of daily life in Lahore. It supports numerous small businesses along its banks and becomes a playground for children on Sundays, who sneak in for a swim despite the restrictions. Lahore’s prestigious universities, which line the Canal, have long been a backdrop for students who once studied by its banks or enjoyed leisurely boat rides. The Lahore Canal has truly become an emblem of the city’s cultural heritage, a testament to its rich and evolving history.
