When people visit Spain, they often just go to Barcelona. I’m glad I stopped there while backpacking but it definitely wasn’t a highlight of my travels. If you have limited time in Europe, it wouldn’t make my list of places you must go.
Just left there 2 weeks ago, was nice but I wouldn’t say was one of my favorites. I've traveled from Madrid all the way down to Costa del Sol in Malaga stopping in Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Granada and enjoyed some of them a lot more than Barcelona. I left My daughter who is spending the summer there and mostly using it as a base while traveling with friends to other places like Ibiza, Madrid, Paris and Morocco. I hate to hear that's how they feel but it's not somewhere I have to ever return. Plenty more places in the world to see.
Please tourists stop going to places you aren't wanted, go to places where you'll be treated with respect. After this when tourists leave they'll protest about the economy going to shambles

I live in a tourist destination. My rent has increased 60-100% over the last 6-10 years. You don't see me protesting and harassing tourists. Why don't they protest the politicians that refuse to ban or cap airbnb and short term rentals is anyone's guess. If anyone likes and embraces my culture enough to want to vacation in my city, they are more than welcome to come here. It's deeply hypocritical to go after the tourists bringing in money and propping up the service sector, when I know these people would feel no internal dissidence visiting mine.

It may feel counterintuitive, but there can be a downside to extensive tourism when it raises the cost of living, particularly housing for locals and makes them have a poor quality of life overall. But knowing Spain, this is also probably rooted in xenophobia as well.
The last thing you want with high cost of living is more people coming to your country. It will obviously harm tourism industry but that one industry shouldn't make everyone miserable. It's not a choice between 2 extremes of unlimited or none, you need to find a balance of tourists with a quota system.

I just went to Barcelona last summer and yes it has a lit of tourists but I got the feeling that all of it's businesses were aimed at tourism, I get that it can get overwhelming but scaring off your customers might not be a great business model

Glad I’m not ever going there. I don’t get what the attraction is there. I’d been to Alhambra area once and the waiters there were shockingly racist and homophobic, we traveled with a trans friend, and the locals drive on the other side of the road in bumper to bumper traffic. It’s not very civilized. So I have no interest at all to go back to anywhere in that country.

I just went to Barcelona last summer and yes it has a lit of tourists but I got the feeling that all of it's businesses were aimed at tourism, I get that it can get overwhelming but scaring off your customers might not be a great business model

I can understand that the rent prices etc increase and it's probably also to tourism. But without tourism they really don't have much else. Some agriculture and little industry. And don't think those Muslim and African migrants will help improve you.

Glad I’m not ever going there. I don’t get what the attraction is there. I’d been to Alhambra area once and the waiters there were shockingly racist and homophobic, we traveled with a trans friend, and the locals drive on the other side of the road in bumper to bumper traffic. It’s not very civilized. So I have no interest at all to go back to anywhere in that country.
Tourism must have a negative impact on their community for them to react that way because I am not sure I understand, but again, as an American, it is not for me to understand...
