    So, my usual username was already taken on youtube, but this is ToyKeeper. Would be nice if I could get paid for my flashlight hobby, but no. I only get "paid" in broken or unfinished flashlights people want me to fix. Anyway, thanks for the kind words. :)

    Yo bro, thanks for the shout out! Both the name drop and the imitation of me mouth-holding the big-headed thrower - give the guy in the video 5-10 less years, some 100 pounds more, a pair of glasses and a set of face scruff that nobody with three or more brain cells can call a beard, and that's me.
    This torch is cool even if it's not in the new configuration. Mine (an old model) has an OP reflector and a domed XM-L2 in 4C tint (like sunlight but a bit yellow) and it still outthrows anything in my collection with a nice beam that can be used at close range in a pinch (like you, I'm not a fan of that intense spot less than 5m from my eyes, it's distracting). It's not the most battery-efficient light source in the world, but then again I think we're at the point where the bottom of the list is still very very good and for the price this can hardly be beat. I keep it in my backpack as a utility/long-range/car light, both because of the beam thing not fitting my indoors use (I have an S2 for that) and because that gigantic head is the archnemesis of a pants pocket (though I've had limited success stuffing it tail-first into the coin pocket of a few pairs of jeans, so the jury's out on that point).
    Happy to see Advanced Knife Niece (because Bro's daughter) helping you out, give her one more spoonful of ice cream next dessert for her efforts. If it's not ice cream, then it can be an extra spoonful of anything it is that AKN eats for a treat. As long as it's not batteries.
    With all that said, I think this wasn't exactly the best Convoy to first receive ToyKeeper's Biscotti; a more EDC-style model like the S or M series would have made more sense than a thrower that's going to see limited advantage in the offered mode flexibility. As a matter of fact I have an M1 (somewhat throwy, think the Klarus with about 50% more candelas) in warm 7A tint and Biscotti coming in the mail, and people at BLF are already on my shoulders asking how it performs. Tint aside, that config seems like it's gonna sell like water bottles during a Texan summer.
    PS: Holy shit that clear anodizing is pretty.

    • @kaiby
      @kaiby 7 років тому

      It was very entertaining. However, I am surprised at the 571 meter rating for throw. I must have measured mine wrong, or something (Mine came out to ~475 meters). I should probably check again at a longer distance, that might have been the difference (I measured at 2 meters)

    • @kaiby

      Mine, is 5000k, but there is no way a tint difference can create a 100m difference in throw.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому

      I would often pick the warmest tint, but I know that most people prefer the Neutral and some even the cool... and since they have a higher output I went with that. Cooler tints are more tolerable in throwers for me... although Neutral is preferred.
      Hope you like it!

      liljack8421
      Yes it is :D And if you want something not this throwy, pretty much any 1x18650 host on Convoy's roster with Biscotti installed will go for about this price (though unless you're going for an S2+, you're probably only gonna get it in black*). I got me an M1 like this.
      *: Even then, BLF member 3tronics powder-coats hosts on demand, with many colors to pick from.

  • @crashstitches79

    Just fyi, this review convinced me to get a c8. Looks like it may take my Dorcy 520-lumen powerbank's throne for favorite 18650 in my collection. The Dorcy is a gem, though, and I've never seen it anywhere on UA-cam or even the internet.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 років тому

      As long as you don't expect to be blown away by 300 lumens more, you will like it. Beam should go much further though than the Dorcy.

    • @crashstitches79
      @crashstitches79 6 років тому

      the Dorcy has a funky optic that diffuses more, so it'll match nicely with a thrower

    At the 5:00 mark your talking about the memory, this driver has what's called off-time memory. It's the best type because it's very intuitive and easy to use.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому

      I agree... thanks. I've heard this discussed before a while back but I wasn't exactly sure how to identify it when I saw it.

    • @JasonWW2000
      @JasonWW2000 7 років тому

      Advanced Knife Bro There is also on-time memory which you might have seen on the Convoy S2 models for example. On those you have to leave it on for 2 or 3 seconds for it to memorize that level.
      Then you have the dreaded next mode memory which really sucks. It switches to the next mode every time you turn the light off.
      So that's the 3 basic types of memory.
      1 Off-time
      2 On-time
      3 Next mode

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 7 років тому

      JasonWW2000
      Interestingly, you can treat on-time as a situational NMM if you, say, have it in max mode but want it to go on low the next time you turn it on - just half-press to erase the memory, then turn off the torch before it can save memory again. I got a lot of practice doing that with my C8 and S2, and lemme tell you, it's quite useful.
      Now full-time NMM sucks full stop. I'm not buying the Astrolux A01 precisely because of that.

    Cool light, and cool review as usual. I like the looks, but I'm more of a mid-range thrower guy, liking less contrast between the hotspot and spill, like you. I used to test throw by shining lights on the school behind our house, but they installed LED outdoor lights on the school and leave them on all night. Not only did I lose my flashlight target, it feels like we live next door to a 7-Eleven now!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому

      That totally sucks! I would hate having that bright light next door. I'm supposed to be the "bright light" next door. The 20s to the 30,000 is a good medium range light... getting about 70 or 80 makes it pretty contrasty for my tastes. It would be much nicer if I was exploring large swaths of land, but I ain't!

      Well that's no fun 😤
      Have you checked out the M series models? They're a good compromise between flood and throw, esp. the floodier M2. And yes, you can get them with Biscotti if you buy them from the Aliexpress Convoy store - just message them about it.

  • @uniquesoundsolutions
    @uniquesoundsolutions 7 років тому +5

    Nice looking flashlight. Not your typical black color. Can't beat the price. Most of my flashlights are flood but hmm makes me want to Add a thrower in the mix.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 7 років тому

      I can concur. I don't really have a big flooder, just general purpose models (my largest and most powerful lights are 1x18650 of 1000-ish lumens), but as far as throw goes I only have a C8. I plan on getting an L2 this year.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro

  • @SteveKluver
    @SteveKluver 7 років тому +1

    Another great video. Thank you! and thanks to Banggood. These Convoy flashlights really are fantastic, and we get more than our money's worth each and every buy.
    As soon as I stated watching this video, I started to wonder where my C8 was. I found it in the gear closet, in its box, with a battery still in it. It is a great little flashlight. I have the older/mode version, and black of course. I have come to find over time, like you, that I am not much for using "throwers".
    The color on that flashlight is very accurate (more so than that Sunwayman D40A you shot here). If more were this accurate, I might start buying a few more "sun light" (Neutral White) versions. I am the kind of guy, who if I buy anything under 5200k, I am pretty upset with myself. So I have a tendency now to get 'Cool' every time. Making sure then, that I am getting at least 5200-5800k.
    Thinking back on this flashlight, after your video brought it up again. I found it odd that they didn't make this barrel just a little bigger, and offer a AAA carousel possibility. That's not for me, but does expand the market for a flashlight. Another reason I bring this up is. Recently, I have found a battery company that is making some good 20650 batteries! What's so exciting about them you might ask? It is that they can be used in flashlights that are big enough for a AAA carousel, and come with a plastic sleeve to use for the 18650. Keeping the battery aligned, and from rattling around so much. With this 20650 battery, you don't use the sleeve, and you get a nice bump-up in battery capacity. Who doesn't love that!
    Did you notice if this newer version of the C8 upgraded the glass too?
    Mode group 2 would be my choice as well. It's really nice that this mode group is choice #2. So we don't have to wait until flashy number 9 or 12, to set it where we want it. Sweet!
    Low voltage protection! : - ) Very good.
    2.65V+, that is interesting. Thank you very much for checking that out for us. I also find it interesting, that with this newer version, they didn't go with a "Low voltage flashing". Instead of letting it slip-off into moonlight. The way it is now, it might be something that could easily go unnoticed, during the day. Accidentally leaving it on for example.
    For my piece of mind, and cell health. I like to not get below 3.2V, if I can help it.
    I look forward to the next video!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому +1

      I don't have another C8 to compare it to... what is the upgraded glass? Like a coated lens? It looks to be coated to me. Well there's resting voltage... and fresh out of the light voltage. I want to say the 100% test, the battery had been off for a while and was about 3.1v. The other two runtime tests where I ended the test with light coming out was about 2.65-2.7. So I can't say what exactly the cutoff voltage is... perhaps toykeeper could enlighten us.

    • @JasonWW2000
      @JasonWW2000 7 років тому +1

      The clear C8 should have the AR coated glass lens stock.

    • @SteveKluver
      @SteveKluver 7 років тому

    • @SteveKluver
      @SteveKluver 7 років тому

      Advanced Knife Bro - Well given all that. I'd say we're in good shape then.
      Yes, I was thinking of an AR glass coating when I mentioned the updated glass. I have one of the oldest ones, and it's glass doesn't appear to be AR coated.
      Thanks again.

    • @JasonWW2000
      @JasonWW2000 7 років тому +1

      Steve Kluver Yeah, all the other versions had regular glass. Only this new clear version has all the fancier parts standard. AR coated glass, upgraded firmware, XPL emitter, etc... It's the most expensive of the Convoy C8's but is still very inexpensive.
      BTW, you can find replacement AR coated glass for the regular C8's at several places. You can even order the black version from Convoy with an upgraded glass lens. Even with the new driver as well. Simon can custom make it for a few dollars more.

    Instead of putting a light in your mouth as you did at the beginning of the video, put in in your shirt collar. This works really well with medium size lights and a button down shirt. I worked on electric meters for an electric utility company for 40 years doing this. No need for a headlamp and you have full use of both hands, not to mention the benefit of not putting a dirty light in your mouth.

    Do you think it would be alright if I used this light on a shotgun? Would the recoil pretty much break it? Also is there no momentary on? Only a setting where you can put off/100%?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому +1

      I theory it could work because it has springs at either end... But I wouldn't trust it because it changes modes based upon button presses. Plus it does not have momentary on. You might try a light like an armytek predator or olight makes some gun mounted lights too. The Armytek predator has a momentary on and you switch modes by twisting the head. That way, if the recoil causes the light to break electric contact within the tube it won't change modes. I am operating mostly off theory here... but I don't think this is an appropriate light for a gun.

      This will be marginally brighter than your maglight and have a much much tighter hot spot... it'll also be a lot smaller. The 600-800 lumens different wont be a a huge difference in your eyes.

Something i love about maglite is if you ask for a spare part like an o-ring or a button they will send you one-as long as you can give them your serial number. Im actually getting a spare button cover in the mail for an older maglite.

    Hi. Just found this in the hope that it would help me sort modes on my C8. Very clear instructions but no luck. Not your fault.
    I unscrewed the tail cap with light on and now stuck in High.....multiple clicks to try and enter settings but light does not go off. Any clues?
    Thanks for the video by the way.

      +Franco Tomei do you have the clear model? The clear models firmware is different than the other versions. Sounds like you have it in option 12. Have you done the 10 plus taps of the button while on to get into programming mode? Basically if you watched my demo here and you followed my instructions, and it's not working- then your light might be defective. If you google "toykeeper biscotti firmware" you can find the instruction manual for the firmware. But I basically showed you how in this video.

    • @francotomei4725
      @francotomei4725 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. I tried the ten+ taps and succeeded only in giving myself a headache with the light just flashing each time at full brightness.....it has now stopped working altogether. Decent cells used, Fenix and Nitecore to check for any issues there, but nada. Gearbest want me to send a VIDEO of the flashlight 'not working'...go figure. Thanks again for your response. Will let you know how I get on and yes, I do have the clear one. While it worked, the output was astonishing.

    Is it normal for banggood shipments to be "not found" when tracking? I ordered this light along with a few extra batteries. The batteries came without a problem but the C8 can't be found in tracking.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому +1

      +Daniel Kompolt yeah sometimes those tracking numbers are wonky... they go through various posts... try 17track. I've had problems tracking stuff through Banggood and gear best both... but stuff eventually arrives

    which one has a LONGER distance beam convoy c8 or eagle eye x6 ?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 років тому

      There are many different LED options, so that is not answerable until you compare the specs. The candela is the key... does the eagle eye youre looking at have more or less candela than the one I reviewed here.

    How does this flashlight compare in durability to an Elzetta?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 років тому +1

      I would assume the Elzetta is probably a touch more durable. Elzetta like surefire has always been too much of a price point for entry for me. They're generally much more expensive than the competetion, have less mode selection, and are usually underpowered. People on Candlepower forums like them, and looks like they make a lot of mods for them. I think they geared more toward the tactical and shooting crowd, which is not me.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 5 років тому

      A potted Convoy owes nothing to an Elzetta. Look for an M1 torture test.

    I just got 1 of these from gearbest. Can't seem to get it 2 go into program mode. Is it possible that this light is set as is? Gearbest site says its driver is 7135x8

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому

      You're light might be? Is it the clear version? The clear version is different than the standard version. There's also a possibility that Gear Best has a different driver in theirs. Mine came from Banggood... and as you can see- mine is programmable.

    • @singhdogg3435

      Advanced Knife Bro quick question but this is regarding convoy L2. What would be a better battery setup 2x18650 or 2x26650? And why? Thanks.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 6 років тому

      You can only get a non-clear Convoy C8 with Biscotti if you ask the seller directly in the Convoy AE store. Got me an M1 and an S2 that way. Still waiting for the time I can save up on the dosh and use Bro's aff link.

    So it is anodized and not just bare unfinished aluminum?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому +1

      +martinaee it's creation thread over on BLF, says specifically it's clear anodizing. I don't know how it's done... but that's what it is. I guess. It doesn't look quite like bare aluminum.

    • @silentthunderordnance1655
      @silentthunderordnance1655 7 років тому +1

      Anodization isn't innately colored. It is an oxide layer which forms on the surface, and is highly porous. That highly porous surface is what gets infused with dye, resulting in the colors everyone is used to. Then this surface is sealed. (again, generally speaking) In this case, they just omit the dye, hence "clear."

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 років тому

      Thanks for the explanation! I think the light looks nice and has a nice texture to it without being overly slick.

    • @martinaee
      @martinaee 7 років тому
