    I understand there are unique circumstances and exceptions, but generally citizenship is the better option. Once you have citizenship, it cannot be revoked (under most circumstances). You not only have the right to live there, but you have access to certain social benefits that legal residents typically don’t have (i.e. the right to vote, exemption from international fees at universities, being able to register your spouse or children as citizens, being able to carry the passport of that country, etc.)
    That being said, obtaining citizenship (particularly through naturalization) can be a lengthy and expensive process for many. In such circumstances, residency may be the next best option.
