    You should also consider consular support in different countries. The UK has an embassy in almost every country and as a British citizen and passport holder it's relatively easy to access consular support wherever you are. Ireland has very few embassies in comparison and it may be more difficult to access consular support in some parts of the world.

    To some extent it often doesn't matter. Unless you are a big international globetrotter, for most it doesn't matter. I have a UK passport and an EU passport and as most of my travels are to the EU and my UK passport can get me an ESTA for the USA, I don't really need a lot more than that, logically speaking. Most people with a UK passport and an EU passport have got most bases covered between them anyway

    Read all the comments. Lots of countries got the same idea for naturalised citizens, 10 yrs for Singapore, 5 yrs for Malaysia, 7 yrs for Malta. Literally every old world country got the same rule and grant minister the power to revoke the certificate of naturalisation if one is involved in terrorism which is very normal. What sets new world county at least english speaking countries like Canada USA New Zealand and Australia apart is that they allow naturalised citizens live overseas permanently without filling form to retain the citizenship and declare they only live abroad temporarily per year. The intention is those who come outside of out society should contribute for example pay the tax and work for rest of their life, we give our own citizens the right of keeping citizenship forever doesnt matter where they live bc theyre one of us. - Ireland is for irish. New world counties are founded by immigrants therefore such rule doesnt exist but strip citizenship to prevent from terrorist attacking is just part of national security concern. Lots of Asians i know would rather take british than irish even after brexit. People leave for a reason, if a country is so great with loads of opportunities then why people leave lol.

    If a British citizen living in Ireland was claiming means tested benefits, they wouldn’t qualify to get Irish citizenship on the basis of residency, the rules for them in that regard are the same as for everyone else, they won’t make exceptions to the rules just cause you are British 🙄 You would also not be able to naturalise as a UK citizen living in Ireland if you have a criminal background, both spent or unspent.

  • @NeurodivergentGuy2023
    @NeurodivergentGuy2023 18 днів тому

    Stupidest idea ever, first of all Ireland would not have the resources to deal with 70 million odd people just deciding on a whim to move there, that’s would be 700% of Irelands current population. Also Irish Citizenship via naturalisation is given on the assumption that you will continue to live in Ireland long term, if you take Irish citizenship then take up residency elsewhere, or acquire another citizenship, the Irish government have the power to revoke your citizenship status. If millions of British citizens did happen to move in Ireland in future, then the common travel area would need to be looked at because it would be clearly unsustainable.

Rent prices are far higher in Ireland than the UK (even look at the difference in rent prices between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, there's massive disparity in the border regions.) and minimum wage (crucial to note because Ireland has a very large working class population) is around on par with UK minimums. Canarian here. With all due respect, you are mixing a lot of things in a wrong way. We are not protesting against tourist but the tourism model. You said "If you don't want this, just don't advertise it", yeah, like we decide that. We are protesting against OUR goverments. Saying that is pretty naive. In Canary islands, there was a growth of 3.9% in last years.... while locals are poorer every year. Tourist money go to the hotel owners (the majority of them aren't even spanish) and the few politicians who are bought to do nothing. Did you know that they are actually fining people who refuse to give up their homes for tourism? Yeah, look for it... A rent now is more than 60% - 70% of the salary we receive here on average. Our ecosystems are getting heavily damaged and I could go on for weeks... Saying that both sides have a point, where a point is I almost can not support my own life here vs If you dont want me to go don't advertise is infuriating man... And again, our protest are against our goverment and the model. I'm sorry if I sound rude, but the situation here is just unacceptable. Hotel workers have to live far away from hotels because they cant afford rents near the hotels (if there are rents in that areas for locals) and then, they go to wrok for 10 - 12 hours for minimum wage.... Situation is really complex and messed up.

  • @hannofranz7973

    I perfectly understand the anger of the local population. When tourism comes to an extreme that the local residents can't afford their rents or mortgages anymore because air B&B and similar agencies are moving up monthly rents so high that even the people that live on tourism can't get to the end of the month, something goes terribly wrong. Part of the staff in Mallorca are living in miserable conditions due to unaffordable housing. Local residents in Barcelona find no places on public transport to go to their work places or are constantly disturbed by masses of tourists in their neighbourhood. Of course, we are all tourists when we go abroad but the housing sector needs to be regulated and illegal renting cut off. People are legitimately fed up in all the major tourist areas.

    Visa-free travel is nice (and is important for global mobility) but it’s still a privilege at the end of the day, and those policies can change. If you are Spanish by origin then it’s not a problem acquiring other citizenships, it’s only if you are naturalising as Spanish they will insist on you giving up your previous nationality.

    When you naturalise, yes, you do have to inform all the nationalities you currently have - and even the ones you once had, but renounced to or that were revoked. If there is any discrepancies, Spain would block your naturalisation, for instance. But say if you already is Spanish and naturalise elsewhere, Spain wouldn't know about it. Some countries do require in theory that you communicate it or they have it in their constitution that, by obtaining another, you are automatically renouncing their citizenship. Be aware, though, that in certain cases, countries do send letters to the embassy of your "home country" to inform them of your naturalisation. But it hardly ever leads to anything and no action is taken by them.

    Biggest one is taxation, which you mentioned, and education.
