Detailed Speedmaster review: • Long Term Review Omega...
The Omega Speedmaster and the Rolex Explorer are both steel sportswatches that have a background in exploration. One having gone to the Moon, the other to Mount Everest. Both are iconic watches within their own brands and both are often on the radar of the same watch collecting audience. Both of these watches are absolutely fantastic. Bang for buck, the Speedy wins this, but overall, there is no denying, the Explorer wins the battle.

Watch Collecting Strategy thanks a lot sir! Greatly appreciate the kind feedback 🙏
This would be a quintessential 2-watch collection.
I can't even begin to imagine the amount of work you put into this behind the scenes. Absolutely love the editing, fantastic video!
thanks a lot, I very much appreciate reading this feedback! Worth the effort then! :-D
Thank you for a great video, very entertaining and much appreciated, particularly at this time.
Thank you also for the encouraging feedback, equally appreciated at this time!! 🙏 Stay safe
Great review! Love the review approach and concept. Informative, yet very amusing.
Thanks a lot Ronin! Great to read 🙏
I love both !! congratulations ,excellent review. Greetings from Portugal .
Thanks a lot Jose! A wonderful duo. I find it hard to find a good excuse to add a third to that duo (i find em - but it is hard ;-))
Super stoked that you did a video of these two watches. They are my favourites (would never sell either as well) and love that you have them all over your site in different strap combos. I agree with your analysis of the two and also that the speedy works best on a strap. I miss my speedy as it is getting serviced and due to the pandemic wont see it for a while. Keep up the great work and excellent video!
Great reading you here Kyle!!! Thanks a lot for the wonderful feedback. I hope you get that Speedy back soon. Stay safe over there and talk soon! 👍
Great matchup and video!
Hey Steve, great to see you here!!! Thanks a lot sir, much appreciated
Speedy is far more legendary I'd say, but the Explorer is clearly the superior watch here! What a fantastic - extraordinary - video, thank you!
It is difficult to beat that whole Moon story hehe :-) Thanks a lot for the positive feedback!
maybe should add History session, or maybe resell value
@@degriff More different Rolex types watches (8) have been flown in space than Omega types (5) #MoonwatchUniverse
Wong C.F Keith both have excellent resale value.
Another awesome video 👏🏼 keep up the good work 👍🏼👌🏼
Thank you very much for the encouraging words! :-)
The Speedmaster weakness is the bracelet clasp. The Explorer is arguably more versatile, but ONLY on the bracelet. The Speedy on the other hand, is versatile, maybe more, depending on how you wear it. If you put an crocodile leather strap on the Speedy. It out dresses the Explorer. The Explorer doesn’t look as refined on anything else as it does with the bracelet. The Explorer is meant to wear the Ouster bracelet. As for the Speedmaster, it can wear a NATO, high end leather straps, vintage leather straps, it’s own bracelet. You get a different watch when you change the Speedmaster. Also you can put different generations of Speedmaster bracelets on any Speedmaster. With the right combination of solid end links and solid link vintage bracelets (especially the tapered 20-16mm) The Speedy looks even better. I love the Explorer but the 36mm wears much better and looks just as vintage as a modern Speedmaster. It’s a very tough comparison. I own both a Speedy and a 36mm Explorer. These are the perfect 2 watch collection. Both fly under the radar and go with any style and occasion. I say buy both! You can get an Explorer for $5-$6k and a modern Speedy mint for $3500-$4k
The bracelet clasp and also the bracelet if you ask me. It is in dire need of an upgrade/change I'd say. You are absolutely right that on the strap the Speedy takes the cake. Also indeed strangely enough the older bracelets are (much) better looking than the current one.. For the Explorer, I looked at the 39mm vs 36mm for a long time, ultimately I went for the 39mm but it was not an easy decision! I agree with your approach - go for both ;-) Thanks a lot for your comment and feedback, always nice to hear a nicely worded opinion!
I don't think you can get the Explorer 36mm, hesalite, 1016 for 5-6k$. And that's the one comparable to the Speedy.
@@turvyjj9232 $5-$6K for a 1016, definitely no way. Plus $15k for a poor example plus $20k for a good condition 1016. I personally don't care for the 1016, but I can see why many collectors like the 1016.
@@Milofchg I think the 1016 is the nicest Explorer by far. More subdued and elegant, less shiny and blingy. It has something in common with the Speedmaster hesalite version. Shiny watches are discordant with real character, to say something.
I have the Explorer - love it, so versatile as it covers dress and casual. My other watch is a Tudor BB GMT Pepsi, which is also a versatile beast, a little more casual (still fine in a board room), more presence / tool like (Ie a lot thicker) and a full diver. Great video, and a nice combo.
i have the rolex milguass and just ordered the GMT pepsi. I am strongly considering picking up the explorer. Are you satisfied with the explorer?
@@hutchman0823 just sold it - I now have Air King, Zenith El Primero and the BB GMT. Over time I found explorer was a bit small for me. Depending on your wrist size, you might prefer your Milgaus.
This video is on an entirely new level. Holy crap.
Haha thanks so much, really great to read!! 🙏🥂
Wow discovered your channel great content subscribed
Thanks a lot, truly appreciate it and a pleasure to read!
Really enjoyed review. I love your presentation style with the cool graphics. Thanks 👍😊
luke eldridge thanks a lot for the feedback and for watching Luke! Much appreciated 🙌

Thank you very much Anish! Very nice to hear and much appreciated 🙏
Beautiful video. Please keep doing these. They are gorgeous
K Adams thanks a lot K! Will do for sure :-) Stay safe 🙏
Both really great as everyday watches. I own and love them both and both were intended as casual kind of low-key every day watches. I wear the Speedmaster more because I think the design is just a little bit more interesting.
Manny Calavera i can’t say I’m any different :-) Well said 👍
Great video. I have 3 Speedies and also a Rolex Datejust 42. All fabulous watches. Steel bezel on the Rolex scratches very badly (and that’s just wearing it for work in an office job). Something to bear in mind. Can of course be polished if you don’t mind that. I love the waterproof properties of the Rolex, although bear in mind you should have it pressure tested annually if you plan to swim whilst wearing it.
I own both as well and ❤️ each of them equally. Each gives me a deeper appreciation for the other.
Very well put, I feel exactly the same way!
One Question why did you not go over function..for instance the stop watch/ chrono function of the omega? You had the chrono second hand going like the Rolex but that is not the normal mode.... very confusing
love the format of this video 2 minutes in and subscribed
Thanks a lot Louie! Much appreciated 🙏
@@degriff explorer is my grail watch now i need to add the speedmaster to the list... my wallet is not very happy
Nice video! I actually sold my Speedy for an Explorer, and I love it. You're 100% right on the fit on wrist, the explorer just wears perfect.
Excellent video! I love both watches. My dream collection... Planet Ocean, Explorer, De-Ville, Carrera Skeleton dial 01... maybe Speedy. Very different watches for all occasions.
Javier Carrizosa that would be a very versatile and unique collection! Thanks Javier!
Fun video! I sometimes wonder if we need anything besides a Speedy & Explorer.
Beautiful review, watches and video. Thank you
Thank you very much!
Great video! I agree with all your points! I think we must have very similar tastes in watches. I'm the (very) happy owner of a 214270 and I often look at the Speedie, especially the First Omega In Space that is a bit smaller than the original one! Excellent presentation of the vid with the 90's street fighter design! Cheers
Great reading you here again Moon! Glad you caught that SF reference ;-) The Fois is only smaller because of the lug guards as far as I recall when investigating that watch, it is a minor difference. I would always suggest the pro above any other speedy 🤷♂️ Stay safe out there 🙏
@@degriff Yes, and the other downside of the FOIS is that you can't have the beautiful hesalite :) Thanks man, stay safe too !
nice video. If you don't mind, what type of camera is it?
Thanks! This was shot on an old d5300 :-) Nothing crazy. Thanks for watching!
ATELIER DE GRIFF thanks!
The question is how did he light the video...cameras do not matter. Great video btw!
Excellent comparison! My 2 watch collection, Speedmaster Pro & Tudor Black Bay 36, blue dial.
That is a great 2 watch collection as well, absolutely :-)
Very cool video. Love both watches!
Thanks a lot Flokke! Love em both as well, no doubt 🔥
Great video, i cannot choose, i really like both, i have 2 omegas, the moonwatch with zaphire sandwich and the gmt, also a submariner (Hulk).
This two timepieces are completly different but great as well, my next watch will be an explorer or datejust
Would be interesting to see an updated matchup with the new 2021 Speedmaster Pro with the METAS-certified caliber 3861. Thanks for the video!
Thanks a lot for the feedback. If I can get my hands on one, would love to redo this matchup :-)
@@degriff it would be awesome if you did! I’m curious about the new bracelet on the 2021 Speedmaster. Either way, great video
Just like you I have both and would never part with either . Classics in their own right 👌
A lovely duo, hard to beat :-) Thanks a lot for the feedback, very much appreciate it!
totally
owing speedmaster, and just pay for my explore1 :)
Thanks for another great video! I really enjoyed these two watches going head-to-head. I agree that, after going to the score cards, the Explorer should take the win. However, on my score card the fight was a little closer. As you know, I too own the Speedy Pro (Hesalite). I'm looking to add my next piece in about 4 or 5 years and it looks like it's going to be between the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M and the ROLEX Explorer. The Seamaster provides a great value for the money, but being a three hander, time-only guy I'm leaning towards the Explorer. Your video has given me more food for thought. Cheers my friend!! Be well!!
Great reading you here Rene! Always highly appreciated :-) Clearly both are awesome watches, and I have a lot of love for the speedy! Between seamaster diver 300m and explorer, it's a also very difficult to choose. Both are great watches, the explorer perhaps a bit more timeless, and the seamaster a bit wilder due to its color scheme. But I actually want to add one to the collection as well at some point! I particularily like the grey dial, what a beauty. I actually have a video pending on the seamaster ! :-)
@@degriff Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, as always. And for me, being the conservative person that I am, it's the black dial on the iconic, yet controversial, bracelet. Best!
Correct me if i'm wrong but the Explorer just isn't a historically correct piece. The one that was used for the historical hike up the Everest was a white dial Oyster Perpetual 34mm which was then later converted to the 36mm Explorer to commemorate that expedition.
Correct indeed. We did the full historical rundown in written form on the site if it can interest you: atelierdegriff.com/2018/05/30/rolex-explorer-1-buyers-guide/
Thanks for watching and the feedback! To me the Everest story does very little, there’s many other reasons to like the Explorer :-)
Amazing video! Is this the 36mm or 39mm explorer?
Thank you Andy! This is indeed the 39mm. Still very much in love with it ☺️
great video, thanks.
James Egan thanks James!
Is there a rematch with the new speedmaster 2021 release?
I love the Explorer, the Mercedes hour hand looks great, but if I'll definately stick to my Speedy.
Speedy is so fantastic, can't fault you! :-)
Just what I needed today. I have the 214270 and would love to add a speedy at some point down the line. They would both sit nicely with my 2254.50 SMP300. Anyway thank you for your vid, much appreciated by many no doubt.
Take care folks....
Miles F thanks a lot Miles! 🥂 a gently used Speedy can be found at a reasonable enough price nowadays. But you already have a lovely duo I see 😄👍
ATELIER DE GRIFF
Thank you sir 👍
The absolute perfect two piece collection, but speedy on leather or nato depending on weather season 💯
Totally 👍
What website would you recommend to purchase an explorer?
honestly none. Go to your local AD and do not buy online above retail. Plenty of Rolex AD's around that want to take your money in exchange for an Explorer :-)
Which will fetch better value in the secondary mkt?
Rolex retains value much better than omega. Assuming you’re purchasing new
Rolex any day indeed..
Great production value
Thanks a lot :-)
Well I just bought both of these for my collection! Perfect video for me to watch!
Fantastic collection!!! Congrats!
@@degriff Thank you!
Nice video, but I am quite surprised (and a little disappointed) that the watch movements were not mentioned. Aren't they after all as important as the looks?
covered that in extreme detail previously on the website and also separate watch videos on the channel :-) The Explorer video is more recent, the speedmaster is quite a bit older on the channel. Yes - the calibres are very important indeed!
My next two watches, wanting the Rolex first, but the ongoing wait has been long and they just released a new Speedmaster that is tempting. After those two, then a Reverso and that should do it.
Hah Joe, i literally picked up my Reverso yesterday 😅💪 The new Speedmaster is great but it is 25% more expensive, that’s a big price increase. Perhaps grab the outgoing model with a nice discount while you can. The explorer is highly likely to get an update this year
@@degriff Yes, based on how I have been disappointed with Rolex new releases (OP41, Sub 41) I need to get that Explorer before it's too late! I've been waiting from 2 ADs since September. I did go see the 1861 Speedmaster at my AD earlier in the week, and they would give 10% off, which is tempting, very tempting, but the bottom line is I do no like the bracelet so much, but even worse that bulky clasp. In the grand scheme of life, paying a little more for the Speedmaster with a better bracelet won't bother me too much. Which Reverso did you get?
for the extra 3K it should win.
you are correct sir, these 2 would make a 2 watch set for most people. However 2 set collections also limit further explorations.... such as gold dress etc.
I personally feel the added complication should have either cancelled out the water resistance or taken more hp from the explorer. However Rolex still wins but by a slightly narrower margin
Good point indeed, should have dropped in a mushroom, Mario Style, to add some Hp ;-) Thanks a lot for watching and the feedback! 🥂🙏
I had a screen shot of this thumbnail on my phone for a while and now own both!
The best ''two watch collection'' there is.
I think about selling my Explorer and buy myself a vintage speedy (cal. 861). My other watches are a Rolex 16610 and a JLC Reverso. Some thinking to be done 😉
Those are very nice watches. A speedy would definitey fit on with those two beauties! Thanks for watching !👍🥂
don't do it, you will regret it.
Perfect 2 watch collection 😎
Pm how much?
Just get both. I have both and love them equally
Good video but... I think the caliber it's importan variable to compare, the most important maybe...
Good review. But, you cannot compare the watch's souls by specs ))
Already get speed master and tmr is getting my explorer
Can’t wait~
Congratulations! Let me know how you like em. Such different beasts two icons and a great duo imho
great combo
likeris subruknem thank you :-)
Comparing a chrono whose design dates back to the 1950s with a contemporary 3 hands makes no sense. None really wins. They are both fantastic, but too far different to compare. A Railmaster Vs Explorer would have been better
(Sorry for my crapy English)
Love both but explorer wins solely on grounds there is not a million limited edition versions of the explorer
100% 👍
I wear my Explorer more often than my Speedy simply because of it's versatility. However, I like them equally and would never get rid of them.
I have a speedy and love it, but I am finding myself strangely attracted to the Explorer
I love both, excellent pieces (and very different indeed)
The Speedmaster's legend is far greater.
agreed!
@@degriff Loved the video format to be honest!
@@threehander Thanks a lot Alexander, that is really great to hear. Took quite some time to put together :-)
Climbing the Everest still can't reach the moon~
@@wchingfong explorer never was up everest anyway it was the oyster perpetual ,the explorer was introduced later as a tribute , the other watch up everest was a smiths.
Decent video 👌
This video ending needs a Fatality Mortal Kombat style 😃.
Rated PGS i admit i was considering it 😄 thanks for watching! 🙏
ATELIER DE GRIFF great video. First time I see this kind of style in watch review. Looking forward to more
Love the speedmaster. But I just don't get the explorer. I might need to wear one and see what the fuss is all about
I totally get it. The explorer also wasn’t my first choice. It grew on my to the point where I then suddenly just had to have it 😅
Welp, only way to figure out is to get both
Having owned both, I can say that Speedy is more iconic, timeless, classic and legendary. Whereas Explorer is more tough and truly lived up to it's name of do anything, go anywhere watch. These two watches alone really makes the perfect two watch collection.
Valence Ho absolutely agree. The legendary status of the speedmaster does erode a little with every single limited edition, special edition etc... takes away some of that magic 🤷♂️
@@degriff agreed - this is the problem. Omega have continued to dilute the legacy of the watch through all these limited editions. We all get frustrated with Rolex supply / demand issues but they respect and nurture the watch's heritage. You just can't imagine Rolex offering 20 limited edition versions of the Explorer. Maybe that's just the challenge of being owned by the Swatch Group but it means they will never compete as a brand on the same footing
@@michaelbishop9157 Rolex limits the number of production of all sports/ professional watches, in some extent
@@wchingfong all brands limit production to some extent of course but limited edition versions of the watch dilute the heritage
Wow my dream 2-watch collection!
What is your wrist size?
16.5 cm 🤜
@@degriff Thanks!
So I have the slightly older 39mm Explorer with solid white gold 3, 6 and 9 and kind of prefer that look, there is also one other aspect of the Explorer that it has an anti magnetic balance spring. I adore the watch and wear more than my no date Submariner. I have just bought a Speedmaster Model 3520.50 in fantastic condition with what looks like a brand new bracelet, I love the look of this watch on my wrist and the chronograph is awesome. The only thing I am worried about is the lack of water resistance. I have been warned by several people that Speedmasters are very sensitive to water. I also think they are not quite as tough as the Rolex, but I don’t know how true that really is. All I know is “over the moon” with mine.
A superb duo! Yes the Mark 1 vs Mark 2 explorer is personal, At the time I could have gotten either one, but personally prefer the mark 2 :-) Good to have the choice! How do you like the bracelet on the speedy? I find it in dire need of some finetuning..
I have Speedy, water resistance is fine, as long as you don’t go crazy. I think people make too much if the 50 metre WR, but as long as you don’t expect it to go diving it will survive. Keep in mind, Speedmaster was the ONLY watch to survive the NASA torture tests in 1965, which included humidity and water tests, because astronauts would be splashing down in salt water. A well kept speedy will be your grandkids legacy.
ATELIER DE GRIFF Actually I do like the bracelet it’s very comfortable to wear. I think it looks nice too, I’ve only had it for a short time so I can’t say how it stands up over time, it’s definitely nice quality, maybe not as good as the Rolex bracelet though.
I have both. Love 'm
Due to both these watches being iconic I can see why one might compare them. However, if I wanted a diver I would be looking at the Omega Diver or Sea Master versus the Rolex Explorer. Also, the Speedmaster "sandwich" can be purchased with a sapphire crystal, front and back, so you can admire the movement. Lastly, there is the issue of availability as the Explorer is often on a wait list, and priced over retail making the price comparison even more lopsided.
The Explorer is superior on Earth. The speedmaster is superior in Space. I lived with both but I kept the Explorer. The water resistance alone makes it so much more useable.
I love the summary haha 👍😄 Yes - if I had to choose after all this time, I’d keep the Explorer purely because it is the more robust one. Luckily so far I didn’t have to make the choice and can keep both.
Explorer is no doubt a better quality watch. However it’s a boring watch. Sold it. I still have the speedy and never get bored of it. Speedy is very versatile and looks phenomenal with any type of strap.
If the explorer would be a 36mm watch again, it would be even more clear to me. Although I think you should have both in the collection
Hey Daniel thanks so much BFF or watching. , If it were up to me it would be 37(.5)mm. We can only dream ;-) 36mm is a bit too small for my taste for this design. Now, a nice 36mm 1016... that’s a dreamwatch, sadly the pricing on those has gone stratospheric 🙈
@@degriff I could live with a 37mm explorer too :D
I’m not feeling the speedy personally, because I prefer the panda dial better. It feels cluttered.
Moonwatch all day.... just too legendary.
Epic backstory for sure, will be hard to beat. Perhaps having to wait until the Mars landing to see what new watch may compete? :-)
If you're going to the moon I'd say speedmaster, if you're going to the beach, explorer
Outstandingly fun graphics and a very rational comparison. But...there's something about a Speedmaster..... ;-)
Absolutely :-) Thanks a lot for watching and the feedback as always!
I just got the explorer. And I own a speedy. I have the perfect 2 watch collection.
Congratulations 😄🥳👍
Thanks. I am so excited. It comes in today some time
You should have compare a chronograph to a chronograph
Omega needs to make a new speedy that is 100M waterproof. I wouldn't dare wear a speedmaster on any kind of a dive.
They don’t compare !?!
Speedy wins !!!
they look like the same size wtf
My 2-3 cents.
Explorer's flat reflective face can be used as a heliograph (in a pinch). It doesn't have an AR coating that scratches.
Speedmaster’s Hesalite crystal can be polished out if scratched.
Explorer's simple dial is aesthetically pleasing to me. When I'm outdoors, I really don't want a constant reminder of the date.
Speedmaster’s chronograph function is useful for timing pasta.
Rolex 100m water resistance is actually deeper than 100m so, the Rolex can double as a recreational SCUBA backup timer to my dive computer.
Speedmaster is supposed to be rated to 30m, but flooded when I took it snorkelling to 20m.
Stainless steel: My Speedmaster’s scratches more easily than my Explorer I.
Pins on my Speedmaster bracelet corrode and break (it’s not easy to get repaired).
Rolexes hold value better than Omegas.
Rolex after sales service in Singapore is MUCH superior to Omega.
On a hot and humid day (35C / 90%), the Speedmaster becomes more uncomfortable because of the deep engravings on the caseback.
Speedmaster’s clasp can bend and the hinge corners start digging into your skin.
It's like compairing apples with pears ...
This is not even close. I would buy the explorer.
2 watch collection
Exactly 🔥🔥
I own both. Both are amazing but these are very different animals. The bracelet on a speedy pro is truly a joke.
I wonder if this will be the year where they finally 'fix' it, it is after all the year of the moonwatch.. If not this year, then when..
Both are my grails
The Explorer has no story to tell. It's overrated IMO.
Very unfair and unrelated comparison a chronograph with something that doesn’t even have date and you compare
their heights and give Rolex the advantage what did you smile before this video?!
I smiled before and also smiled during this video indeed. This is clearly an impossible comparison, as mentioned several times during this video. Both watches are great choices and simply unique.
They're different watches
Really!!!!!!!
These two watches are not comparable, the explorer doesn't have a single complication, isn't the same size...
Which would you pick, the Explorer or a Grand Seiko Snowflake?
James C hey James! Really tough one, but I go with the Explorer. Both excellent choices, both can be an “only” watch collection etc..
absolutely great video! No idea how can you have only 2.3k subs, like, subscribe and share from me!
Thank you for the very kind words 😄🙏
The Explorer did not go to Mt Everest!
correct
