I asked if he could hold it for me so I can stop by and take a look which he did. I stopped by a few days later and to my surprise I fell in love with this Explorer and bought it the same day. I spent a few hours with him and during our conversation I asked about the Daytona white dial which he responded that they have to many people waiting for me to be added. Instead, it’s professional and educational experience, and well-read knowledge. Thank you. I am not a rich man haha! My feelings about the subject are probably the same as an art critic or an automotive journalist. We don't need to own a Picasso, a Monet or a Ferrari to discuss their worth, their past etc (though it would be amazing) I am fortunate to know a bit about design which helps with understanding some of the first principals, but its just so great that there are so many people who can enjoy what I bring forward (even if it is polarising) Thanks a lot for the comment, brother.
I am not a Rolex fan, but if I was to buy one it would be the Explorer....its a work piece but good looking as well, very utalitarian ! Well presented as always, with good insight and understanding. Thank You!
Vaughan, as always thank you for all of your comments! I'm glad you enjoyed the presentation. I also feel that the utility of the watch outshines the "Rolex" persona, which is why it deserves just that slight bit of attention ;)
@@ID-Guy of course it does, I am not that shallow of a guy. The explorer is the only watch that has resisted the Rolex bling..for that reason it's still cool ok..what about version 2..not a mention ...how about the white dial...silence....and this is from a guy who dislikes rolex@@
I have always loved the Explorer design for the reasons you summarised so we’ll. but you have hit the nail on the head with the size. I’ve always considered the 36mm just a smidge too small for me, so was attracted to the 39mm which I bought and am really pleased with. The size is perfect for me but somehow I still prefer the 36mm layout. 37.5mm would I think be just perfection. I’ll get my designers on it straight away.
Hans you’ve just re-released the 36mm version because the 36mm version is the perfect watch and I’ve just bought one brand new straight out of my AD. Thank you.
I’ve owned the 39 mm mark 2 Explorer for 2 years now and I love it! The dial is amazing to look at. I’ve taken it traveling around the world, hiking and driving at various race tracks. It is a perfect size on my 7 inch/18cm wrist. I don’t get your “negative space” comment on its dial. I think the dial is perfect. I have a date just at 36mm which makes sense, but a professional series watch like the Explorer is best at 39mm size. Thanks for the video.
To me any time only watch is perfect! As for the Explorer being “overlooked” have you seen one in an A D’s window? It’s certainly getting recognition now! Good reviews & videos IDGuy.
Thank you Fredy! It would be great for them to make that small adjustment just to keep the elements of the dial that bit more connected. But hey! The latest rendition is still superb, it's well beyond competent. Thanks for the comment, man!
Your point about negative space and integration made me realise why I love the design of the Heuer Carrera and my Dan Henry 1964 (which is based on the Carrera) so much. It is 38mm and its compax subdials just fit perfectly into the design. This probably wouldn't have been possible with a 40mm dial.
The 6298 is considered a pre explorer the 6350 was the first actual explorer to officially bare the name EXPLORER Then closely followed by the 6150 and then then 6610 in the early 60's the 1016 was introduced. I consider myself an Explorer aficionado, as I own a number of them.
Thank you for the details, LLD! This is brilliant! So then how many references would the Explorer have to its name? About nine? That still trumps the Submariners insane lineup ;)
@@ID-Guy To date there are 7 references in the explorer line up: 6350 (honeycomb dial) 6150 6610 1016 - longest running model of this ref (1960's till the later 1980's) 14270 114270 214270 ( both the mk1 and mk2 versions) Thank you for the videos, keep up the good work!
Another fantastic video ID Guy! IMHO the Explorer 214270 is almost the perfect watch. The size, shape and aesthetics of the watch allow it to fly way under the radar, as far as Rolex's go. It can dress up as well as down, yet still remain true to it's tool watch roots. I believe it is one of the most versatile watches on the market. If I was forced to be limited to a one watch collection, the Explorer 214270 would be my one watch.
Thank you for the excellent comments as always, Blueshirt! I completely agree. It has that special something that makes it a cut above virtually any watch in the family AND it doesn't look gaudy and pretentious. Out of interest, do you own one? And is it the first or second gen 214270? I'm determined to scour the market for an Explorer in the future when opportunity allows
Yes I own a Mk 1. While the Mk 2 is arguably a better watch, I love the Mk 1’s quirkinesses. I absolutely adore it and it will always have a place in my collection.
good review , i wear a 36 every day , and i tend to think of it as the ultimate in stealth watches its seldom noticed and never draws attention , its as tough as old boots when im in bike gear , or as sleek and elegant as hand made shoes when im in a suit.
I purchased a new Explorer in 2018 and then a Sub in 2019. I enjoy them both and take turns wearing them. 👍and I agree with you, the dial on the Explorer is mesmerizing.
I researched this watch to death before I bought it. I noticed that you'd commented on most of the videos I watched :-) good form bud. Wear in good health!
FifthPint Ha, that’s funny. I also wish you well with your watch. I really love it and I suspect you do too. Funny story....you can probably appreciate. I wore my “Explorer” on vacation to Niagara Falls and got it wet from the waterfall. My first exploration with the watch. LOL. 😁😁😁😁 Mark
Great video! I truly wish Rolex would use the same numerals as the 1016 and reduce the size of hour markers. The maxi dial application has ruined the watch for me.
The font on the 1016 is just pure, understated style and perfection. The modern explorer's numerals have a rather unappealing/unsubtle 80s beefiness to them. (imo)
So many people wish for that font to return (and I do too) It's strange how Rolex font has transitioned over the years but it's also interesting that they have kept the layouts relatively the same since the 80's. Very good eye. This subject needs to be investigated. Thank you for the comment!
Thank you for this! It is great to learn more about the Explorer and feel others appreciation for the watch, which I wear with pride every day. This video was my gateway to your channel and I find your content very exciting. Your points on watch design helps me develop on my horological journey. Already looking forward to the next one😀
🇬🇧 Wonderful review and a great build on Adrian’s video. Its been said on here but you have a great style..... I love my 214270 and its my daily go to watch for work and dinners out. Classy, understated and solid. They got the design spot on with this. Keep up the great work? (Your name we do not know)....
The Explorer is alright. It’s not flashy or shouty. It’s an honest, down-to-earth watch - from Rolex, no less. I like that. Also, excellent video, as always. Interesting points and unique insight from someone who is clearly a professional in design.
Fact check: Tenzing Norgay wrote in his autobiography that Edmund Hillary reached the summit first. Edmund always claimed they reached summit together. That is pure class right there.
Yet another great video my friend. It is clear to see how the Explorer is the child of the Oyster Perpetual range, very much like the Milgauss. It provides a clear and easily legible display of the time to the wearer and lacking a date complication is an ideal ‘wind and wear’ solution which could easily serve as an only watch. In an ideal world I would be going for the mint example of the 1016 that you showed us in your 2nd livestream. Ever since I saw that I can’t stop thinking about it. Damn, these watch channels!!! ✊
Its interesting to see just how these models all diverged from a single DNA strand. And like the Milgauss, the Explorer has such a charm about it (especially the 1016 - I don't think anyone could pass it by if the opportunity presented itself) Between you and me, look up "Smiths Everest 36mm" - that's more than a good enough fix ;) Thanks for the comments as always, brother AND for your donation the other day! You truly are the MVP (person) of all watch channels on this platform...
I enjoyed this video. Nice to see how it began. At first, I did not like them but now I do. It can go under the radar not to look flashy. It's nice and thin too. Can be worn with a suit.
Thought provoking analysis per usual. I reckon with simpler dial watches such as Exp and no date sub, it's the use of negative space that makes it beautiful. Much harder to make a watch with various complications look harmonious.
I have a 214270 and wear it 6 days a week but I plan on adding a 114270 to the collection soon. I doubt I will get rid of either. The modern version is great for dressing up/down but I believe the 36mm, after trying it on, is wonderful for day to day.
I much prefer the Explorer to the done to death Submariner- tho those early references you showed are so much better because they don't have the awful Mercedes hour hand. Excellent video as always! Cheers 👍👍
Right? How amazing would it be for the watches to adopt the older handsets again? There was a comment further up by @LLD that shed more lights on the older references that are well worth looking at. Thanks for the comment, Inkitatus!
Great video. Sorry to be a nerd, but the reference on the left in the video at the 3:04 mark is the 114270, rather than the 14270. The solid end links on the bracelet give it away.
Any chance you can do a head-to-head comparison between the Explorer, OP, and Omega Aqua Terra? Versatile models. Similar to how you did a video between top dress watches?
Hi...not only is the explorer the perfect watch, your video on it is perfect too...congratulations on another insightful and accurate appraisal of my favourite watch I have ..and I own a few nice watches too
This watch is design perfection, that’s why so many people have the Explorer itch they cannot scratch until they buy one. It is my grail watch and I contemplated buying it several times now. My only problem is that I love it’s story and utility as much as the design and sadly Rolex marketing and pricing strategies makes this watch feel really far off it’s initial purpose. It loses a lot of it’s magic and becomes just a perfectly proportioned luxury watch.
I own a 2017 Rolex Explorer I and i believed this is the most beautiful watch on this planet. Until i bought the new 39 mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual in creamy white. The two most beautiful Rolex watches i know of.
I'm not a Rolex fan, I don't know why but I have never warmed to any of the watches in the range. Other than this one, for some strange reason I find this watch very appealing and as such it is the one single Rolex watch that I intend to purchase at some point in the next 12-18 months.
It truly is a mystery...and it takes hold of everyone in the watch collecting sphere at some point when you think about it. Thank you for the comment, hrabanus!
Just image? More compact, more sturdy and the elements appearing more integrated? I'm so keen. But we may never see it unless we take our watches into the workshop and modify them ourselves ;) Thanks for the comment, Dan
Good video. I think I'm starting to get why the Explore like by so many YT and online reviewers--enthusiasts and fanboys alike. The Explorer never really appealed to me because of the 3-6-9 numerals. I understand that is what many loved about it; but I never did. There was something about that that felt slightly asymmetrical. I don't like watches with numbers on them--except pilot's watches--and wasn't crazy about the Mercedes hands as well. Again, I know that these are the defining features. But, after watching dozens of videos and reading more about it, I am starting to get it. My next step is to see one in person. And, one these SIP orders are lifted in my area I will.
Funny that the video is about the 214270, the Explorer that arguably broke with the lineage more than any other, being 39mm. The 124270 in 36mm is where it’s at!
It depends. If you want to be noticed wearing a Rolex, then buy an OP. If you want a timeless watch that doesn't draw as much attention, then buy the Explorer.
I'm with you, Rob. A white dial OP would be such a killer choice. Keep your eyes on the prices, you might be able to swipe a bargain five digit explorer ;) Thanks for the comment, brother
@@roblockstock Bear in mind, Rob, that it really does blend in, virtually disappears. Honestly, I've had only a couple of people notice mine at work and those were office watch nerds. You need to be sure that you're OK with no one but yourself having a clue that you're wearing a $6,5k piece of industrial art and history on your wrist. I won't trade mine ever, especially that it already bears marks of somewhat unkind use. Also, I spend inordinate amount of time just looking at it :-)
To make it PERFECT. Peg the size at 37.5mm. Add subtle coin knurling (not 1980s date-date faceting) on the rim to hide scuffs. The polished rim as supplied now scratches very quickly. The perfect edge treatment can be seen on some of the Rolex Cellini watches, and (to utter perfection) on Breguet classic watches. Otherwise, the Explorer is ideal for most situations. And whilst I'm here - the latest Explorer 2 size is just too big for most wrists and tastes. You'll see the slightly smaller second iteration rise steeply in value, in the same way as the GMTs have shot up, for no obvious or valid reason.
I wish the top brands like Rolex would consider using harder, more scratch resistant steels for their watches. Manufacturers like Sinn and Damasko do. My 3 year old Submariner shows many scratches from just weekend wear.
I imagine there are more references to the submariner most likely due to its category. As a dive watch especially with the already added complication of a rotating bezel, the submariner has had to keep up with the competition requiring updates not necessary for the explorer. And where radical departures to function needed to be incorporated into the design-there was instead a branched off with the Explorer 2 and Sea Dweller as not to disrupt the iconic designs of the originals.
Sometimes Engineers artists create something so perfect that you don't add anything or take away anything you just leave it alone it would be like adding a mustache to the Mona Lisa or cutting her hair
I'm with you...Writing about all of these watches makes me drool just thinking about them. And I'm so keen on picking up an Explorer in the future (just so that we can all be a part of the club) Thanks for the comments as always, Parabellum!
@@ID-Guy The Explorer is quite exceptional when I'm honest. Its high K.I.S.S. factor makes it so incredibly versatile and more so than say, a Datejust. Would consider it as a first Rolex for sure. Baie dankie, boet ;)
No doubt, I also adore the Milgauss. It's tough to compare the two because the Explorer does (technically) have a cooler story behind it and the classically inspired dial is fascinating...but the Z Blue Milgauss is just out of this world. Thanks for the comment, man!
I like the story of the Milgauss but the technology that made the Milgauss popular (the antimagnetic parachrom spring) is now in all the current Rolex models.
DIsagree with your assessment on the 39mm. The 214270 MKII is the perfect explorer. I have worn several different explorer variations and none of them look as good as the 39mm.
@@A.T.148-Scot-HK recently sold mine along with a Speedmaster (got tired of Speedy Tuesday / Moonwatch fanfair)... One watch guy now, Seamaster 300m (2018)
Absolutely agree. I have many watches between 36 to 39. 36 is too small even on my wife's 6.25 in wrist. Also, young people today prefer bigger watches.
Thanks! Your Video on the Explorer was Superb!! ID Guy keep up the good and professional videos. I like the research, knowledge, and perspective you share with your content! Well Done!
How would you compare the Explorer and the Ranger? Would the quality be on par with the Explorer? I know the proportions of the 39mm Ranger to the current 36mm 124270 aren’t as good (maybe need to compare the previous 39mm Explorer). Just trying to figure out if it’s worth the extra money for such a similar watch. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment, Jeffrey. After spending so much time thinking about the watch, it really has struck me as something else. It has that X factor that keeps it ahead of a large majority of the pieces in its family (I'd even say the Submariner, but then I'd be crucified)
Really enjoy your reviews, and love the look and history of this watch. However, can you comment on the apparent ease with which the 904L steel scratches and whether you personally think this adds or detracts from the watches overall 'design appeal.' Thank you!
To me the Explorer has always been the best Rolex. The dial is left uncluttered, there's no glitz or unnecessary adornment, its just a watch that sat in the Rolex catalogue, overshadowed by the Submariner and Daytona. Prices are still fairly low for what is a stunning watch. It may not have the presence on the wrist like other models, but its the right watch for someone who does not want to draw attention to themselves, and still have a Rolex on their wrist.
I own this watch. it is a simple three-hander, nice but nothing more. If I needed to go anywhere dodgy or rough I would wear a G shock; it's tougher, will last longer and you won't get mugged for it.
With the case, movement and bracelet (aside from clasp) being the same between the Oyster Perpetual 39mm and the Explorer I 39mm, which do you feel is a better design? While the Everest history is interesting, I lean towards the black dial OP. Now to get Rolex to offer it with available clasp upgrades.

A most engaging synopsis I must say. Makes you appreciate the model more than ever.
Thank you.
@@f1shf1ngers24 its Hans down the best everyday watch… : )
@@Giovan_Nino he had his Hans on the ball from day one with 36mm
I’ve owned the 39 mm mark 2 Explorer for 2 years now and I love it! The dial is amazing to look at. I’ve taken it traveling around the world, hiking and driving at various race tracks. It is a perfect size on my 7 inch/18cm wrist. I don’t get your “negative space” comment on its dial. I think the dial is perfect. I have a date just at 36mm which makes sense, but a professional series watch like the Explorer is best at 39mm size. Thanks for the video.
Having handled the 124270 it is a phenomenol watch. The 36mm is perfect size. Simple, classic and functional
To me any time only watch is perfect! As for the Explorer being “overlooked” have you seen one in an A D’s window? It’s certainly getting recognition now!
Good reviews & videos IDGuy.
well presented as always, man. and yes, 37-38 mm diameter would be perfect, imo. another great one from you!
Thank you Fredy! It would be great for them to make that small adjustment just to keep the elements of the dial that bit more connected. But hey! The latest rendition is still superb, it's well beyond competent. Thanks for the comment, man!
I'm an Explorer II guy, but you make a great case for an Explorer and I gotta agree, well done IDGuy!!
The 6298 is considered a pre explorer
the 6350 was the first actual explorer to officially bare the name EXPLORER
Then closely followed by the 6150 and then then 6610
in the early 60's the 1016 was introduced.
I consider myself an Explorer aficionado, as I own a number of them.
Thank you for the details, LLD! This is brilliant! So then how many references would the Explorer have to its name? About nine? That still trumps the Submariners insane lineup ;)
@@ID-Guy To date there are 7 references in the explorer line up:
6350 (honeycomb dial)
6150
6610
1016 - longest running model of this ref (1960's till the later 1980's)
14270
114270
214270 ( both the mk1 and mk2 versions)
Thank you for the videos, keep up the good work!
LOL. 😁😁😁😁 Mark

Great video brother ❤️ I love my 114270, it’s extremely versatile, elegant yet sporty 👍🏼
Great video! I truly wish Rolex would use the same numerals as the 1016 and reduce the size of hour markers. The maxi dial application has ruined the watch for me.
I love these discussions, no where else on you tube. Great channel
Thanks to your channel I now appreciate watches that I would have dismissed as boring and plain before. Less is often more.
What a great video, thank you sir.
I wish this watch came in a 41mm, for my enormous wrists, but even the 39mm is really doing it for me.
The new mic really sounds great!
Thank you for this! It is great to learn more about the Explorer and feel others appreciation for the watch, which I wear with pride every day. This video was my gateway to your channel and I find your content very exciting. Your points on watch design helps me develop on my horological journey. Already looking forward to the next one😀
Love my 14270 36mm, got it in 2009 used from my best friend, it's vintage cause of the last year of production was 2001. Great video
Because "perfection" is in the eye of the beholder.
As always you never disappoint! You offer a unique perspective unlike anyone else that I find not only refreshing but extremely informative.
I own just about every sports model. The Explorer 39 is my go to watch...
Fact check: Tenzing Norgay wrote in his autobiography that Edmund Hillary reached the summit first. Edmund always claimed they reached summit together. That is pure class right there.
Thank you Pete for pointing that out. I hope the error is corrected in the video.
Another great show. Your enthusiasm is infectious.
Great video. The only thing for me is i would offer it as a 41mm instead of 37 as you suggested
They need to bring back the 36mm
If it had the old hands it would look boring to me. Kind of anyway. 😜
Not keen on the Mercedes either, so I went for an Oyster Perpetual in black.
Just discovered your channel and I’m impressed! Keep up the great work brother 🙌🏻
If I could only own one watch, the Explorer-I ref 214270 is it....that’s why I bought two....
Thanks!
You can never have enough...It's like buying shoes! One pair to wear and another to caress ;) Thanks for the brilliant comments as always, man!
I have a 2012 model and it’s my favorite watch and my daily wearer. Great review.
Great video. Sorry to be a nerd, but the reference on the left in the video at the 3:04 mark is the 114270, rather than the 14270. The solid end links on the bracelet give it away.
Beautifully written and delivered.
Thank you for shedding some light on that ever fascinating mystery that is the Explorer!
It truly is a mystery...and it takes hold of everyone in the watch collecting sphere at some point when you think about it. Thank you for the comment, hrabanus!
Outstanding video! Love the comparison of the Explorer to the 114060.
Great video....and yes, I agree, 37.5mm would have truly made it perfect (for me)....
Just image? More compact, more sturdy and the elements appearing more integrated? I'm so keen. But we may never see it unless we take our watches into the workshop and modify them ourselves ;) Thanks for the comment, Dan
Good points! Definitely my favorite Rolex watch.
Thank you for the comment! It has a special charm about it, no doubt
Agreed. If a 37mm Explorer was ever made, that for me would be the absolute perfect watch.
What a great review, enjoyed every second of the video... Thank You !!!
I've had mine since 1972. I'm not a watch person and had no idea the Explorer had such a following.
Funny that the video is about the 214270, the Explorer that arguably broke with the lineage more than any other, being 39mm. The 124270 in 36mm is where it’s at!
The sub is a fashion accessory and the Explorer is a true tool watch. It should have a GMT
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication
04:00 I think the 214270 is actually a little controversial among Rolex fans.
It’s total wrist candy, great video. 👍🏻
I am saving for my first Rolex do I buy the OP or the Explorer. great vids as always IDGUY.
@@EricLongTX You are right Explorer for me ,would prefer to be under the radar when wearing a Rolex.
Also, I spend inordinate amount of time just looking at it :-)
I think the OP is more "under the radar" than the Explorer. I've chosen OP 39 black.
Well done, another great video. Cheers 👍⌚
Thanks a lot David. I had a lot of audio issues and it tested my patience to say the least, but hey! Every day is a school day
@@ID-Guy We always are continuously learning.
After 4 yrs of ownership and insane price fluctuations after discontinuation I don’t wanna sell it - ‘nuff said!
I think that the 'Explorer' epitomises the ROLEX style quintessence.
Stop making me want to buy all these watches!
Just kidding, I really do love the Explorer. Cheers!
Most certainly my next Rolex! Excellent video as always
The only Rolex I like and find something original from the company is the Milgauss
Don’t care for the Milgauss at all. I guess, ‘To each his own.” 😊
Mark Mathosian exactly! It’s why we have so many wonderful choices out there.
@@ID-Guy I tried on the Z blue but prefer the black dial one. If only it had an all brushed bracelet it would be my next Rolex.
DIsagree with your assessment on the 39mm. The 214270 MKII is the perfect explorer. I have worn several different explorer variations and none of them look as good as the 39mm.
I found the case dimensions and font of the numerals to not be quite so perfect. Also in perfection you can grow tired or bored with the design.
Which is what happened to me... I owned the 214270 Explorer for a year and got kinda bored of how clinical and charmless it is.
@@A.T.148-Scot-HK recently sold mine along with a Speedmaster (got tired of Speedy Tuesday / Moonwatch fanfair)... One watch guy now, Seamaster 300m (2018)
39 is small enough and just perfect imo.
Thanks!
Its so perfect in its function and design, that no other than Sir Ian Fleming, author and creator of James Bond, chose an Explorer as his timepiece.
I agree with you, it is one of the most perfect [watches] ever made. Thank you for a fantastic review :)
Thanks for the comment, Jeffrey. After spending so much time thinking about the watch, it really has struck me as something else. It has that X factor that keeps it ahead of a large majority of the pieces in its family (I'd even say the Submariner, but then I'd be crucified)
@@ID-Guy I agree with you. I prefer the Explorer to the Sub - which is beautiful in its own right.
Great vid sir, very concise and to the point
Tensing wrote in his biography that Hilary summited first. On another note entirely, my 114270 is quietly enjoyed.
Really enjoy your reviews, and love the look and history of this watch. However, can you comment on the apparent ease with which the 904L steel scratches and whether you personally think this adds or detracts from the watches overall 'design appeal.' Thank you!
@ That's great to hear. Thanks for your feedback.
They fixed the dial/hands proportions with the current 40mm Explorer
I own this watch. it is a simple three-hander, nice but nothing more. If I needed to go anywhere dodgy or rough I would wear a G shock; it's tougher, will last longer and you won't get mugged for it.
With the case, movement and bracelet (aside from clasp) being the same between the Oyster Perpetual 39mm and the Explorer I 39mm, which do you feel is a better design? While the Everest history is interesting, I lean towards the black dial OP. Now to get Rolex to offer it with available clasp upgrades.
