    The Depth Blur Filter in Photoshop works great on landscape pictures BUT trying using it on a Portrait and WOW! Totally brings it to life and gives the feel of the portrait coming forward of the screen / print! I've been experimenting with this lately and am loving the results! In this video I show you my 3 Step Process...

    Hi Glyn...What a game changer... I usually select my subject, save selection and use Gaussian blur on the background then place my subject as well as more work... { I do this when shooting my Grandson at the park etc, where you sometimes get the perfect portrait and the background is a bit crappy... { I bought your tutorials and creative packs a couple of years ago by the way, and so did my sister { You know her as Rae / Peeblespair }

    Another excellent video Glyn, thank you. I've been "playing" with the Neural Filter Depth Blur for a few weeks, primarily to enhance the effect of making the subject stand out by "softening" the background. The issue I still need to master is how to tidy up the selection because the AI selection sometimes captures a bit of the background. It certainly is a great technique I will continue to use , and I look forward to seeing your follow up tutorial on the blur map. I was going to the Photography Show on Monday, but understandably with the funeral of our dear Queen taking place it will not be open on that day, and I'm unable to get to the show on the other days. I wish you well for your show days and I'm sorry that I won't have the chance of meeting you there this year.

    • @glyndewis
      @glyndewis  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Terry.
      Re tidying up the selection, your best option is to use New Layer with Mask on output so that you can quickly brush in or out any bits.

  • @neilpitchford2498
    @neilpitchford2498 Рік тому +1

    I tried this last night, if you have skin with tattoos, the blur will create edges and holes within those edges as it can't pick a nice clean line to use as a reference so whereas I did like the blur it creates, it's very problematic if the edges aren't unformally lit and visible.

    • @glyndewis
      @glyndewis  Рік тому

      That’s why the best output method is there, so that it can be cleaned when back in the main Photoshop workspace.

    You are the only one I’ve ever found on UA-cam who shares my passion for creating as much extra depth 3D effect as I do. I just love being pleasantly surprised to learn something new and exciting every time I click one of your video’s. Aside from compositing and special effects, I use your techniques more than probably anyone else I learn from when it comes to editing my photography, composites, and even my AI works which makes them stand out and look different from all the rest. I can’t thank you enough for all you do and wish I had you sitting next to me when I edit so I could just pick your brain in every detail of y workflow and how I can make it better. You are awesome sir!

    nice tuto ! Is effect realistic with long hair girl ? I remember an old trick with selecting subject and shrinking the selection inside subject, using content aware fill and apply blur on background layer... to remove halos,... obsolete method ? is PS neural filter as good as Skylum NEO... plugin ?

    • @glyndewis
      @glyndewis  Рік тому +1

      You might need to export as a layer mask and tidy up with a brush on those long hairs but yeah...so far so good. Not used your halo method as I have others that I go to, to be honest and as for the filter being as good as Skylum, I'll let you know. Straight off though, the PS version means you don't have to buy addition al software but I'll take a look anyway.

    • @glyndewis
      @glyndewis  Рік тому +1

      Thanks.
      The first time I apply it I then output to photoshop to make sure the first mask it makes is ok and if needed, tidy it up. Then I run the filter again knowing it will be good.

    Follow-up: in your vid you clicked within the image preview box using "Focus Subject." However, I clicked on my working image and got what I reckon to be the same effect. BUT, in doing so, am I losing something or sub-optimizing the "Focus Subject" effect?

    • @glyndewis
      @glyndewis  Рік тому

    Great demonstration and video, but I was hoping for the opposite effect when I clicked ion the title and picture advertising the video. Understand me correctly your contribution is valid and relevant and I appreciate it.
    What I was subconsciously - naively - expecting was a blur of your friend Trigger's face in a smart way that reduces the wrinkles but does not give a "plastic" skin. In his case, it's totally unnecessary as it reflects his character, personality, male strength, etc.
    Now shoot a portrait of a woman with such lines and you really want help with taking away a lot of the technical beauty of your hi-res camera and top-notch lenses.
    In a demonstration video you would use a Trigger-like portrait as demonstration content, and not a woman's portrait, probably, for sensitivities reasons.
    It may already be "out there" even and I may not know it.
