  • Hello, I'm Marina! Join me on this 4k walk along 📍 Gran Vía.
On today's tour we will tour Gran Vía, the most famous street in Madrid.
This video was recorded in November 2023.
    Curiosities:
On April 4, 1910, 24 years after its project was approved, King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the works for its construction, making it the youngest street in the entire center of Madrid. The works continued until 1921 and lasted 21 years.
It could not be done straight as planned, since it had to respect the presence of three churches: the parish of San José, the oratory of the Caballero de Gracia and the church of San Francisco de Borja.
It begins on Alcalá Street and ends at Plaza de España, with a length of 1.36 km.
It had various names as it was built, until it was officially given its current name in 1982.
Its construction was an important milestone from a tourist, commercial and leisure point of view, housing numerous shops, hotels and cinemas.
Cinemas were very important in their beginnings, they were luxurious buildings more similar to palaces, decorated with neon lights and large posters. Some of them continue to operate, such as the Callao Cinema, the Capitol Gran Vía or the Palacio de la Prensa, while many others, such as the Imperial Cinema or the Avenida Cinema, have disappeared and have been used to house fashion stores.
Some of its most notable buildings are the Grassy, Gran Peña, Telefónica, Carrión and the España building.
We will also find a mythological story. At the top of the Hyatt Centric Gran Vía Hotel, at number 31, we can see a golden statue of Diana the huntress, located in front of it we find a Phoenix, which carries Edimión on its back. The myth goes that Diana visited him every night after coming down from the moon, the romance reached the ears of Zeus, who, enraged, sent the bird to kidnap him and hide him from his daughter, but Diana did not renounce her love and attacked the Phoenix Bird with their arrows, which are engraved on the ground in front of the number 32.
It has been the setting for some films such as The Day of the Beast (1995), The Crack (1981), The Girls of the Red Cross (1958), The City Is Not for Me (1966) or Open Your Eyes (1997).
